16 ON THE FIRST DAY of practice in Monaco, Alain arrived early at the track garages that housed the Formula 1 cars. The smell of gasoline, oil, and tires permeated the pristine garages. Once inside, he stepped into a white race jumpsuit that had sponsors’ logos emblazoned on the front, back, and arms. Alain leaned over and ran his hand over the steering wheel of one of the twin custom-built V6 Formula 1 race cars that had been shipped from Silverstone, England to Monaco for the Grand Prix. As a kid, he’d admired vintage race cars with wooden steering wheels, however this was one most people would call futuristic.
