Chapter 10 Dylan Didn't Care

810 Words
Dylan, who was watching from the doorway walked into the room. His gaze was dark and dull. ''Why are you still awake?'' he asked Camilla in a cold voice. Camilla acted like Dylan suddenly came. She tugged at the corner of his shirt and pulled him down to sit by the bed. She then hugged him and said, "I couldn't sleep because I slept too much during the day. Why are you here by the way?" "I came to see you!" While speaking, Dylan looked at me with his black eyes. He frowned slightly when he saw the back of my hand. "Go, take care of it!" There was no pity nor concern in his cold tone. "I was too careless to have scalded Lacey," Camilla said apologetically with guilt on her face as she hugged Dylan. Dylan stroked her hair gently. He didn't seem to feel much towards what happened, and he wasn't going to blame her for it either. I felt like I was pushed to the side of a cliff. My heart hurt so much that I couldn't breathe. Step by step, I walked out of the patient's room. Of course I knew that I would lose this bet to Camilla. But it was that tiny glimpse of hope that I held onto, just a ''Does it hurt?'' from Dylan was all I ever wished for. But in the end, I failed to get a glance of mercy, not even a bit of sympathy. In the hallway, a broad chest blocked my way. As I looked up, I saw Benjamin frowning slightly at me with a serious look. I didn't understand why he looked like that. ''Dr. Cole!'' I addressed. He looked at me for a long time and suddenly asked, "Does it hurt?" I was stunned. The bitterness I tried to suppress rose within me. "Plop!" A tear of the size of a pearl dripped onto the floor. The wind whistled softly through the hallway, making it feel even more hollow and cold. See? Even someone who barely knew me would ask me if it hurt. So why did someone who had been with me for two years turn a blind eye to my injury? My hand was lifted, and I instinctively wanted to withdraw it, but I was pulled tighter. "I'm a doctor!" Benjamin said, not allowing me to refuse. As a doctor, he just couldn't let a wound he saw left uncared. But I knew well that he was just doing it because I was Dylan's wife, not because he was the kind of person to stick his nose into others' business. I followed Benjamin into the emergency room. He gave instructions to a nurse and looked at me. "Let's get your hand bandaged. Cooperate with me, okay?'' I nodded. "Thank you!" After Benjamin had left, the nurse cleaned the back of my hand that was scalded. Looking at the blisters on it, the nurse frowned slightly and said, "Your condition is a little serious, it may leave a scar on your hand!" "It's alright!" I guess I could take it as a reminder of a lesson I learnt today. To help my wound heal better, the nurse had to pop the blisters and let all the serum in them out. Perhaps she was worried that I wouldn't be able to take the pain, so she said to me, "It'll hurt a lot. Hang on, okay?" "Okay!" Pain like this was nothing compared to the heartache I felt. After that, the nurse reminded me of things I should pay attention to for the sake of my wound. As I was heading back to Camilla's patient room, I heard voices coming from the stairwell. Out of curiosity, I stopped and listened in on the conversation. "Mr. Thomson's gone now. When are you going to divorce her?" Was that Benjamin's voice? "Who? Lacey?" The other man spoke. His voice was low and cold. That familiar voice, it belonged to Dylan. I approached the stairwell and saw Dylan leaning against the handrail with both his hands in his pockets, while Benjamin leaned against the wall with a cigarette between his slender fingers, half of it already burnt out. Benjamin tapped lightly near the burnt end of the cigarette and looked at Dylan with a calm look. ''You know that she didn't do anything. All she's done is love you.'' Dylan glanced up at him and said in a cold tone, ''When did you start caring for her?'' Benjamin frowned at his words and said, ''It's not that, I'm just trying to remind you so you won't regret. Love isn't always never-ending, you know?'' "Ha!" Dylan snickered. "Her love has never mattered to..." I didn't listen to the rest of the conversation, because for certain things, it would be better if I didn't hear him say them himself.
