Chapter 8Wes watched as Lily breathed in her sleep. She was next to him on the double bed, a blanket pulled over her shoulders and her little fists under one cheek. He’d come so close to losing her today. It hadn’t hit him until they’d settled down for the nap a couple of hours earlier. When it finally did, Wes couldn’t sleep. He’d just watched her and tried to figure out what to feel. The window was open, and he could hear wind rustling the trees behind the house. Every so often he heard something else, all the sounds partially familiar but not really. Like the whinnying of horses. He’d never really been around the beasts but knew the sound.
