CHAPTER 1 Jane stood outside the office building, her heart racing with anxiety. It has been a week since Charles' passing, and she has avoided coming back to work, unable to face the emptiness without him. But today, she had decided to take a step forward, to honor his memory. As she entered the lobby, the receptionist, with a bright smile and sparkling eyes, waved at her. She waved back as she walked towards the elevator. Jane took a deep breath and approached the elevator, her eyes fixed on the numbers as they ascended to the top floor. The door slid open, and she stepped out and smiled to herself as walked towards her desk. She checked her time and it was 7:10 am. Nearly everyday for the past two years she had entered this office one hour before her boss would. However, this time around she doesn't know whether she will see her boss in an hour. Roseline already told her he resumed yesterday. She had only met him once and it had been in her first week working there and she has had a crush on him since then. Once she looked at the time, it was 7:15 am meaning she had to get started. It was 8 o'clock on dot when Austin walked out of the elevator, he noticed secretary Jane's desk was not empty this time around except her not being there. He looked away, as he headed into his office. As he opened the door, his nostrils immediately filled with the smell of a freshly made coffee. He walked towards his desk and sat behind it. On the desk stood a cup of coffee and a note. Dear Mr. Carter You are expected to be at a meeting on the 2nd floor at 9 o'clock, and before then you are to read the paper located on your left. ( He looked at his left hand side and noticed there was a paper there) After that, you have a lunch appointment at Pompadour. As for the afternoon, the reading of Mr. Carter's will and testament will be done. I will be out taking care of other duties. In case you need me, call or text the number at the back of the paper. Yours faithfully Jane Seyfried He scoffed as he turned around the paper “who the hell did she think she is". He said as he took out his phone. For a moment, he wanted to call her but he decided against it. Instead he saved the number, and started reading the paper. Jane was at her desk gathering some documents when Roseline walked up to her. “Look who's back! The perfect secretary" Roseline said with a smile. “Don't flatter me, Roseline." Jane said as she stood up and looked up at her. “I dare not," Roseline said as she pulled out her hand for a hug. “You better " she said as she pulled out her hand and hugged her. “Welcome back baby girl, I've missed you" Roseline said, still hugging each other. “I missed you too" she said as she pulled out of the hug. “I just wanted to say hello and welcome you back, I will be going to my office now." Roseline said she walked away. Jane noticed the curious glance from Roseline before she left her. She knew she was wondering how she was coping. She appreciated her concern but wasn't ready to talk about it yet. “Thank you Roseline. It's good to be back." Jane replied to her and continued what she was doing. It was around eleven o'clock when Austin left the meeting. He knows he was supposed to have lunch next according to the note, but she did not write the time. So he decided to call her. He took the elevator up to the top floors. He was about to call her when the door opened and he saw a young woman with deep, rich brown eyes and long blonde hair sitting behind the desk. At first, he thought he had been ignored when he saw she was on a call. “Mr. Parker, I respect you a lot sir but this is not your first time working with us " she said in an angry tone “You should have known how we operate by now." Austin looked at her surprised at her tone of voice. When he first met her, she seemed different from how he remembered her. He couldn't quite say what the difference was, but definitely not the way she looks now. She wore a dark blue body con dress with small pearl earrings and a dainty watch on her wrist. Her golden blonde hair cascaded down her back like a river of sunset hues. She wore a red lipstick which seemed to be right for her and matched the whole dress. This must be the “perfect " secretary everyone has been talking about. He has heard about her from everyone. Most people that are in business with his father or his friends know the young lady and adore her. According to his father's best friend, she could book a reservation at any restaurant, even when it was fully packed. Another of his friends said she knows how to sweet talk people. He didn't know if he believed what they had said about her , but he knew the competitors also loved her. It wasn't until she was standing right in front of him that he noticed she had finished her phone call. “Good Morning sir." She said with no emotion, not even a smile on her face. “I have dropped the schedule for tomorrow on your desk." She said as the two of them walked towards his office. At first he listened to her intently, but he soon had enough. “Jane" he said finally with a firm voice. “We need to talk" Jane nodded, her instincts telling her that this conversation wouldn't be easy. “Jane, I do not care how my father treated you or how close you are to him," Austin continued. “He is gone, and I'm the new boss now. So you work for me." “Where were you yesterday?" He said with an angry voice but she did not reply to him. “I will ask you one more time, where were you yesterday?" He said, his anger rising. “I had a personal day," she replied, straightening up. “A personal day?" He scoffed, his tone dripping with disdain. “You are just a secretary, and you don't get to have a personal day, you are meant to be here to attend to my calls." “I'm not your slave or P A, I'm the secretary to your office" She said with her tone changing slightly. “It doesn't change the fact that you work for me. so I think that is what you are." He said, but was cut off by angry Jane. “I'm not your slave or PA, and I will never be," Jane Continued. “Not to a spoiled brat like you that always disgrace his father." “What did you say?" He said, looking menacing. Jane realized she had crossed the line. Her heart raced, but took to her ground because he deserved it. “The deal with Mr. Wallace has been taken off and he has invited you for dinner tomorrow. As for the gala, we have started working on it. I will present the report to you when we are done with the preparation, and that will be all." She said as she turned away to avoid his question. She knows she has crossed the line but she is not ready to beg him so she has to find a way to excuse herself from the moment. “Ohh, your lunch reservation is by 1 o'clock."
