The Navy decided to train me in linguistics. They thought I had an ear for it. They were right. I had grown up speaking English, Dauphinese, and now French.After some rather extensive training, I became a lower level Navy linguist, or what we call today, a cryptologic technician. The work was challenging, and I was fascinated by it. Life was going well. Within those first few years I had seen a lot of places. I met up with Grand-père in Hawaii. I was getting reassigned to a new ship, and we were sailing out of Honolulu. Grand-père was living with a native Hawaiian woman about half his age, and although I may not now appreciate such behavior in potential suitors, it seemed right for Grand-père. He had always been young at heart, and he and Kailani both seemed happy. They waved goodbye to me
