Aeron POV
The air between us was thick with tension, and I could feel Elaine's heartbeat echoing in my chest. My hand was still firmly gripping her wrist, and the warmth of her skin was a tangible reminder of the bond that had snapped into place when I laid eyes on her.
But as I held her close, I noticed something that sent a chill down my spine—tears.
Elaine's beautiful blue eyes filled with tears, and I watched in stunned silence as they began to spill down her cheeks.
My grip on her wrist loosened slightly, the sight of her crying pulling me out of the intense haze that had enveloped me.
"A-Are you okay?" I asked, my voice uncharacteristically shaky. The confidence and control that I prided myself on seemed to slip away as I confronted the reality of her pain.
I had faced down enemies and led my pack through perilous times, but this—this was something entirely different.
Elaine tried to wipe her tears away, her movements frantic, as if she could erase the evidence of her vulnerability.
"I-I-I'me fine," she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.
But I could see the truth in her eyes, those windows to her soul that spoke of pain far deeper than words could convey.
"No, you're not," I murmured, my voice gentler now, softer. The urge to comfort my mate, to protect her from whatever was causing this pain, was overwhelming. But I didn't know how.
My entire life had been about strength, about control. I had been taught to solve problems with force and strategy. But this…this was something else entirely.
Elaine continued to cry, her tears falling freely despite her best efforts to contain them. The sight was a dagger to my heart, a wound I didn't know how to heal. Every tear that fell from her eyes seemed to deepen the ache inside me, an ache that I didn't know I was capable of feeling.
She was trying so hard to keep it together, to hide her pain from me. But I could see it. I could feel it. And it was tearing me apart.
"Elaine," I whispered, her name slipping from my lips like a prayer. I wanted to say more, to offer her some comfort, some words that would make it all better. But I didn't know what to say. I needed to learn how to fix this.
And then, almost instinctively, I acted.
I cupped her chin in my hand, tilting her face up towards mine. Her eyes, reddened and glistening with tears, met mine, and for a moment, the world around us seemed to disappear.
All I could see was her; all I could feel was the overwhelming need to protect her and claim her as mine in a way no one could ever take away.
Without thinking, I leaned in and pressed my lips to hers.
The kiss was sudden, a shock to both of us. I felt Elaine flinch, her body tensing in surprise, but I didn't do anything away. I didn't need to feel her to know that she was real, that this bond between us was real.
Her wet and warm tears brushed against my cheeks, mixing with the kiss, and I could taste the salt of her sadness.
At first, she was stiff and unyielding, unsure how to respond. But as the kiss deepened, I felt her slowly begin to relax, the tension in her body easing away like a dissipating storm.
Her hands, clenched into fists at her sides, now reached up, resting hesitantly on my chest.
I could feel her fingers trembling through the fabric of my shirt, and with each passing second, the kiss grew softer, more tender.
When I finally pulled back, I was breathless, my heart pounding. Elaine looked up at me, her eyes wide with a mixture of couldn't I couldn't decipher.
The tears had stopped, though a few still clung to her lashes, shimmering in the dim light of the room.
"Why?" she whispered, her voice so soft that I almost didn't do it. "Why did you do that?"
I took a deep breath to gather my thoughts and find the right words. "Because I couldn't see you in pain," I admitted, my voice rough with emotion. "I needed to comfort you and let you know you're not alone. I'm right here".
Elaine's eyes searched mine as if trying to determine whether or not she could trust me.
It was a look I was familiar with as people often looked at me that way, wondering if they could trust the ruthless Alpha who ruled his pack with an iron fist.
But this was different.
This was personal.
"I don't understand," she said after a moment, shaking her head slightly. "Why would you care? You don't even know me."
The question struck me like a blow, and for a moment, I didn't know how to respond. Elaine was right, of course. I didn't know her—not really.
But that didn't change the fact that I cared, that I felt this overwhelming need to protect her, to keep her safe from whatever was haunting her.
"Maybe I don't know you," I said slowly, my words measured, "but I do know that you're my mate. And that means something to me. It means everything to me."
Elaine's eyes were filled with tears again, but they didn't this time. She blinked them away, taking a deep, shuddering breath.
"I've been hurt before," she said quietly, her voice tinged with a sadness that made my chest tighten. "I don't know if I can trust this…trust you."
Her words pierced through me, and I felt a pang of guilt. I didn't know what had happened to her before, but whatever it was, it had left scars—scars that I could see now, hidden beneath the surface.
"You can, Elaine," I said firmly, my voice leaving no room for doubt. "I know you don't like me, and I don't want you to trust me immediately. But I promise you, Elaine, I will never hurt you. I will protect you with everything I have. That's a promise I intend to keep."
Elaine looked up at me, her eyes searching mine for any sign of deception. But there was none.
I meant every word I said. I would protect her, no matter what it took. She was mine now, and I wouldn't do anything—or anyone—harm her.
"Why do you care so much?" Elaine asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why does it matter to you?"
I didn't have an easy answer for that. All I knew was that from the moment I laid eyes on Elaine, something had shifted inside me that I couldn't explain.
The connection between us was real and undeniable, and it grew stronger.
"Because you're my mate," I answered simply as if that explained everything. And in a way, it did.
"Because the moment I saw you, I knew that you were meant for me, and I for you. I don't know why the Moon Goddess chose us, but she did”, I said, holding Elaine’s face.
Elaine was silent for a long moment, her gaze dropping to the floor. I could see the wheels turning in her mind, her internal struggle. It was clear that she wanted to believe me, to trust me. But something was holding her back—something that I couldn't see.
"I want to believe you," Elaine finally said, her voice trembling as she held my hand. "But I'm scared. I've been hurt before, and I don't know if I can go through that again."
Her admission tore at my heart, and I felt a surge of anger at whoever had hurt her, anger at the world for being so cruel to someone so clearly undeserving of it. But I pushed that anger down, focusing instead on the woman before me.
"Then believe this," I said softly, reaching out to gently cup her face in my hands. "I swear to you, Elaine, I will never hurt you. I will protect you from anything that tries to harm you. You don't have to be afraid anymore." My commitment to her safety was unwavering, and I could see the reassurance in her eyes.
Elaine looked up at me, her eyes filled with hope and fear. It was clear that she wanted to believe me and trust in the bond between us. But trust wasn't something that could be forced. It had to be earned.
She closed her eyes, leaning into my touch, and for the first time since I met her, I saw a flicker of peace cross her features. It was a small victory, but it was enough for now.
I knew it would take time for her to fully trust me to believe in the bond that connected us. But I was willing to wait. I would be patient, I would be kind, and I would be there for her, no matter what.
Because she was my mate, and nothing was more important to me than her safety and happiness. My patience was a testament to my love for her.
As I stood there, holding her close, I knew that my life had changed irrevocably. I was no longer just Aeron Stone, Alpha of the Crescent Moon pack.
I was a mate, and with that came a new set of responsibilities and purpose. I was inspired by this new purpose, ready to face the challenges that came with it.
And I would face those responsibilities with the same determination and strength I had used to lead my pack. Because now, I had something even more important to protect.
