Rise of the Manimals
The Avian was kind of a shock to readers who expected a direct sequel to 1200 AM Live, because it was never intended to be a direct sequel. In fact, it wasn’t actually intended to be a sequel of any kind.
During the writing of 1200 AM Live I was in what you might call the early stages of my Manimal phase, where I became intrigued by half-human monsters. I blame the later books of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, and his half-human Taheen. I loved the Taheen, and always wished there was more work featuring them. I’ve used other Manimals in my work. My Phoenix Girls fantasy series has Manimal characters, but I always felt they lent themselves better to works of fantasy than horror, and horror is my primary genre, so I used them sparingly.
