VIOLET
“Well, I’m going to lay down and rest. Have a good night, Violet,” Amara said, patting my shoulder before she walked into her room through a set of velvety curtains. I looked at my own bed, a small cot by the wall and thought of how privileged I have been all these years, and how I have taken everything for granted.
I shouldn't care. I was the most beautiful princess in the land, and everyone bowed down to me. But as I found myself in this situation, learning things I had yet to learn, I realized not everything revolved around me.
There were more people in this world, more than just me.
“I’m going to take a stroll in the woods, just to clear my head. Be back in no time,” I said, setting my bowl of stew on the table and putting my hood over my head, taking my sword before I left. Who knows what kind of creature could attack me at night?
I have yet to see a werewolf, and that’s because Amara thinks I was not ready to meet the pack. I needed to hone my skills a lot more in order to be deserving of the honor.
Just as I closed the door, I heard a rustling sound, my eyes glowing to see where it was coming from, but I couldn’t see anything or anyone around. Sneaking around a few trees, trying not to make any noise, I saw a man standing behind one of them.
His tall figure and broad shoulders were intimidating, but I was not going to let that stop me. I had to prove Amara I had what it took to protect the pack and get their blessings.
Taking my sword out slowly, I approached him. He perked his ears as if he heard me, but didn't make a move until I swiftly and quietly turned into my black smoke, appearing behind him as I pointed the sword at his neck.
A stranger lurking in the dark was something I was not going to allow, not when my job was to protect Amara.
♣♣♣♣♣♣
I found myself laying on my back as his massive werewolf hovered over me, angry that I had slashed his face while blood trickled down his black fur.
I got off the ground where he had slammed me and ran as fast as I could, the werewolf following behind as I remembered the words Amara told me a few days ago.
“No matter how angry a werewolf looks or if they try to attack, you’re not allowed to hurt him or her. They’re part of the pack and it’s punishable. Just… Immobilize.”
Taking her words at heart, I took speed and climbed on another tree, this time succeeding. As soon as he approached, trying to get to me, I jumped on his back, my sword falling on the ground.
“Bloody hell!” I shouted angrily as I wrapped my arms around his neck, trying to make him give up and just kneel. But he was too strong for me as he grabbed me with his teeth by the arm, scratching my skin, and dropped me on the ground once again.
A loud howl echoed through the woods while he approached me menacingly, as if hunting a prey. His growl was making my skin crawl, and I was suddenly frozen on the spot. That is until I saw my sword next to me, giving me the perfect chance to defend myself.
I grabbed it, ready to aim at him, just at the same time he knocked it off my hands, breaking it in half as it fell to the ground.
Not being able to disappear in my smoke due to exhaustion, I knew I was in trouble.
Crawling backwards to get away from him as his eyes studied me, those gorgeous golden orbs that were calling to me, I found a heavy branch and grabbed it, getting all my strength from my adrenaline and hitting him on the head with it, as hard as I could, followed by a smack on his back.
He growled in pain, kneeling as he looked at me, his eyes softening while letting out a whine, falling flat on his back and shifting back to his human form, unconscious.
I sat on my legs, trying to catch my breath as I stared at his body, now naked in front of me. His chest and abs were great to the eyes, and his… gift was exposed, giving me the perfect view.
“Who are you? And what are you doing lurking around here?” I whispered, looking around to find something to cover him. A piece of his shirt was enough to cover at least his member until I was able to find shelter for him.
My adrenaline was still kicking and with as much strength as I could muster, I grabbed him by his legs and dragged him towards Amara's cabin.
She would be upset that I brought a stranger here, but this man looked like he was in need of company or at least some help.
As soon as we arrived at the cabin, I opened the door quietly, dragging him towards my cot and laying him there, covering his body with the sheets.
He stirred, groaning in pain, but didn't come back to his senses. I headed to the kitchen, grabbing a bowl with warm water and a clean towel to pat his cheek, where I cut him.
“That's going to leave a mark. No one told you to attack me,” I muttered, patting him. The man was dirty and bruised, looking vulnerable in his human state.
“Who are you?”
“Violet, what's going on…” Amara gasped as soon as her eyes fell on him. “Ezra.”
I was confused and a bit lost.
“Ezra? Is he the Alpha you told me about?” I asked, curiously. What would the leader of a pack be doing lurking around the woods, staring this way when he could have just knocked on the door?
If he knew Amara, then, why hide?
“What happened?”
“I went to take a walk in the woods like I told you and he was behind a tree, staring at the cabin. I faced him and we ended up in a bit of a scuffle.”
Amara approached him, checking him from head to toe, when she noticed the small gash I gave him.
“Did you do that?”
I nodded as she shook her head disapprovingly.
“He’s not going to like that. It might heal fast, but will probably leave a mark. What were you thinking?”
“He charged at me, what was I supposed to do?” I asked, getting angry as I stood up and walked towards the fireplace, hugging myself as my body felt a sudden cold.
“When he looked at me, his eyes widened, and they glowed bright. I was mirroring his look, not knowing why, but it felt as if my heart was trying to jump out of my chest, to tell me something about him.” I confessed.
“Oh, no. This can’t be good. Or maybe it is way too good,” she mentioned as she stared in between Ezra and I.
“What is it?”
“You’re probably his mate, Violet, but we won’t know anything until he wakes up. I wonder what happened to him, it’s unlikely of him to be wandering around without an escort. His beta is not here to be by his side. He’s settled in his mate’s pack after they married, ready to come back anytime.”
“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear the first part. But what does it mean by he’s never been here without someone?”
Amara sighed, a concerned look on her face.
“There’s only one possible explanation for all this. Ezra Atwood is not the Alpha anymore. He’s a rogue.”
