Chapter 5

Anna POV

‘How are you dad? I'm sorry I haven't been around lately. I have to do the job and school and take care of mom. She is better now after a few therapies. and we missed you a lot. 

I just finished my last exam yesterday, I hope I can keep my grade. Only one year left now. 

Dad.... I've been looking for a summer job, and there is this unusual offer. Should I accept that? It offer a lot of money that will help me and mom. But the job, is something new for me. I have to pretend to be someone else, and he said that I can save someone's life.

You always told me to help other people. Do you think it will be ok if I accept that?  

Oh dad, I wish you could be here right now. Just wish me luck with everything. I love you dad.’ 

I visited my father grave this morning. Just told him about what happen. If he was still alive, I was sure he will support me, and agreed with my decision. He always taught me to help other people and not to be selfish. 

I went home and called Mr. Mason. I told him that I accepted the job. He sound relieved when he heard my decision.

" I'll send someone to pick you up to sign the contract. Get ready Miss Hart." he said.

Wow, that was quick. I didn’t expect that fast, but I guess just get it done.  

Within 30 minutes a guys showed up in my front door. He knocked on the door and I opened it. He was a tall guy, with black hair and brown eyes.

“ Good Morning Miss Hart. Im Jude, Mr. Mason send me to pick you up.”

“ Morning Jude. Lets go then.” I said as I was ready with my bag in my hand.

He opened the door for me and let me sat in the back seat. He drove me to the Red bean Restaurant, the same place like yesterday. He opened the door for me and he asked me to followed him. The restaurant staff didnt asked for my reservation, as I walked with Jude inside. They seemed to know Jude very well, and let us in without asking. We walked to the second floor to the terrace, the same place I met Mr. Mason yesterday. I saw he already there, waiting for me. He greeted me, and I greeted him back. Jude left me with Mr. Mason after he pulled a seat for me.

“ I’m glad that you decided to take the job Miss Hart.” He said smiling.

“ I hope I can help and get the job done. “ I said, smiling back at him.

Mr. Mason already prepared the contract and asked me to read it. I read it carefully before I signed it. 

It said that my job at the agency was to assist someone for treatment purpose and will do all the necessary things during the job. The company will covered all the expense and all my mother needs during the job. The company will be responsible on my safety and It said that the job is confidential. And some other things included the amount of money we had discussed. 

And I signed it. I hoped I did the right things. 

"When I start to work Mr. Mason?" I asked him. 

" Since you have sign the contract, we are going to start first thing in the morning tomorrow. The soonest is the better. “ He said.

I understoodd why he wanted this to be done as soon as possible, because like he said, someone's life depended on it. But still I had this nervous feeling about what will happen in my new kind of job.

“ I need you to clear up everything you have today. Talked to your mother, your previous employer and all the people you know that you are going out town for a while. So they won't be suspicious about your leaving. "

“ I’ll tfransfer you the money today, and the nurse will be at your house this afternoon." he said

" And don't worry Miss Hart, we'll take good care of your mother. " he said relaxing me. 

" Thank you Mr. Mason. And please call me Anna" I said to him. 

" Your welcome, Anna." he said.

After everything was done, he called Jude to drive me home.

We drove about 20 minutes until the car halt. 

“ We are here Miss Hart” he said, before he opened his door and walked outside. Then he opened the door for me. I stepped out of the car and thanked him.

I walked inside my house and found my mother was reading in the backyard. I walked quitely and gave her a peck on her cheek. She looked surprised to see me.

" I didn't hear you coming." She said with surprised expression. 

" I just got home mom. What do you read?" I asked her. I pulled a chair and sat next to her. 

She showed me the book’s cover. The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton.

I remembered read the book last year. I liked the way Wharton told about the two lover, but the story was just beyond it, something social rather than personal.

“ Good choice” I said

I’d been thinking to tell my mom about the job. Not sure how she will reacted. I bit my lower lip as I found it hard to tell my mom that im going to leave her for some times. 

“ I have all day to read now.” She said smiling. 

“ Is there something wrong honey?” She asked me.

" Mom.. There is something I need to tell you" I told her. 

She closed he book and looked at me

" Is everything OK?" she asked me in concern. 

" Yeah, everything is fine mom." I said and she relieved.

" What do you want to tell me Anna?" she asked me in full attention. 

" I got the job." I said to her

" That's great honey. Congratulation." she said, “I’m proud of you.”

I smiled when I looked at her smile widely. 

" You haven't told me what kind of job is it?" she asked. 

" it's.... Job at the bank mom. " I said to her lying. I'm sorry mom

" That's great." she responded.

” So, whats bothering you?” she asked me again.

She looked at me waiting for my answer.

" Mom.... The job took place out town." I said to her. She looked surprised and thinking. 

“ How will you manage to do the job out town?” she asked me

“ Aren't you going home everyday?” she asked me with worry. I cant blamed her. Of course she was not ready to be left out town with her condition right now.

“ Mom, I have to leave out town for the job, but don't worry, there will be a nurse here to take care of you and accompany you while Im not here." I said to assured her. 

" We can't afford to have a nurse Anna." my mother said. I know she didn't want to bother me for a nurse expence. 

" I get a good job mom. They paid me enough. And the nurse is one of my friends relatives, so she doesn't charge a lot and she needed the job. " I told her. I lied again. 

I had to lied to make it made sense to her. 

" We can meet her this afternoon." I said. 

" Are you sure?" she asked for my confirmation. 

" Yes mom. I'm sorry I have to leave you." I said to her. 

Yes, I had to leave her, but I needed the job and had to do this. 

" How long will you be gone? " she asked

" 2 months." I said. I hoped I can finished the job earlier. 

" It's fine Anna, if you think it's for the best." she said. 

" Thank you mom" I said to her and hugged her. 

I love my mom. She took a good care of me all this time and It was time for me to do the same for her. I wished I could not left her, but I had no choice.

" Mom, I have to go to the restaurant. Will you be alright if I Ieave you for a while?" I asked her. 

" Sure, I'll be fine." she said smiling. 

" Have you eat your lunch?" I asked her. I hadn't check the kitchen. 

" I have Anna." 

I nodded.

" I bring some food if you want to eat later. It's on the table." I said and she nodded. 

" Thank you honey." she said

" Bye mom" I said good bye to her as I walked out of the house again.  

I went to the restaurant and talked to my manager, Mr. Johnson. He was surprised for my sudden resign. I told him I'm sorry because I have to move out town for awhile.

I called Josh on the way home, but his cellphone wasn't active.

Mr. Mason did transfered me 50 grand in advance. I took some of it and bought some groceries and my mother's need. I gave her some money if she need anything. 

It was 6 pm when I finally arrived at home. I put the groceries in the kitchen table. The nurse would be here soon for the introduction. So I waited for her while I sorted the groceries out, put the meat and frozen items in the freezer and put the fresh vegetables, milk and eggs in the fridge. The rest of the groceries went to the kitchen counters. 

The nurse came at 6.30. Her name was Mary. She was a nice looking women about 35 years old. I introduced her to my mother and I told her about my mother condition and her habits. 

" Don't worry Miss Hart. I will take a good care of her.” She said. 

“ Thank you. And please call me Anna.” I said to her.

“ You can call me if you want to talk to her Anna." she gave me her phone number and she told me she will be here at 7 tomorrow morning.

I still hadn't told Josh about my leave tomorrow. 

So I decided to go to his house since his phone was not active. I knocked on his back door house, but noone answered. Probably his parent were leaving. But I saw his room lamp was on, so I decided to climbed up at his climb trellis as I used to. I opened the window and I came in to his room. 

I gasped and clasped my hand on my mouth. Josh was making out with a girl on his bed.

Shit! I regreted my decission to go to his room. I walked backward slowly to go back to the window. Didn’t want them to find out about me. But my hips hit Josh's table accidently and dropped a box on the floor. They both looked at my direction as the box touched the ground. 

"Anna! " he shouted at my name, shocked at my presence. I could feel that my head burnt to red of embarrassment. And so were them.

The girl, which I had never seen before, covered her topless with a pillow. She had blonde hair and blue eyes. She was pretty, I can tell, even with her flushed face. 

" I'm sorry Josh... I... I didn't know.." I turned down my head and came out of his room, climbeding down the trallis.

This cant be good! What was I thinking?! 

" Anna" Josh called me from his window. 

I turned around and said, " never mind Josh. Finish what you are doing. I'll talk to you later. I'm sorry" 

I didn't know Josh had a girlfriend. I should had took the door like any other people did. I regreted my self. 

I walked back to my house and went straight to my room. I took my suitcase on the closet along with some clothes I might needed for my job. I packed only necessary things. Mr. Mason said I won't used my things while doing my job. 

And then I took a shower. I'd been out all day and needed to refresh my self. The cold water felt good in my skin and fresh afterward.

I walked out of the bathroom with my bathrobe and found Josh sat in my bed. 

" What are you doing here?" I asked him. 

" You said you want to talk." he told me. 

" Well ya, but you shouldnt be here while I'm taking a shower" I told him

" Well, you should talked to your self." he said uncomfortable. I know what he meant by that. It was my fault. 

" I'm sorry I barged in to your room. I really didn't know you have a girl friend." I told him apologize.

" I'm about to tell you that." he said.

" We can talk later. Don't keep her waiting" I said. I walked into my closet and closed the door. 

" She is gone now " he said. 

I felt bad. I would never barge in again into Josh room. I knew Josh had dated few girls since I know him. But he never told me he had one recently.

" What is her name?" I asked him from the closet. I grabbed my white short and green t-shirt, and  put them on.

" What?" He asked, cannot heard my voice clearly. 

" I said, what is her name?" I repeated my question to him as I opened the closet door slightly and then closed it again.

" Mandy " he said.

I fixed my t-shirt and walked outside the closet. 

" She looks like Mandy" I said teasing him.

" How long have you date her?" I asked him curiously. I guess I wanted to know about this girls he crushed on. Josh never had a long relationship as far as I know, 2 weeks at most. He said he hadn't find the right one.

" A week" he said shortly.

I was going to asked more about Mandy, but he asked me first.

" So... What do you want to talk about?" he asked changing the subject. 

Good thing he asked me first. 

" I got the job" I said to him, without looking at him.

" At the bank?" he asked me and I nodded. 

" That's great! Congratulation to you!" he said cheerfully. 

" Thank you." I said, sitting in the bed and put a pillow on my lap.

" So, what bank ?" he asked me as he moved slightly beside me.

" Well, it's... a foreign bank." I said. Duh. 

He frowned. I knew he would asked me some more.

" Does this foreign bank has a name?" he asked me again, pressing the word 'name' 

" It's a mediterian bank, not well know here." I just said. Not saying any bank name. 

I bit my lower lip knowing that it might not end well. Josh usually knew if I lied. 

" Ok... Where is it located, if its not well known here? And how you even know if they have occupancy? "he asked half investigating. 

" It's not here" I said. 

He looked confuse. 

" What do you mean?" he asked

" It's out town." I said. 

" So, you'll be out town this summer?" he asked me unbelievable " How about your mother? " he asked. 

" Some one will be here to take care of her. It will be 2 months only, and my mother is fine with that." I told him again. 

“ Are you sure with that?” he asked me .

“ Yes, She will be alright. A nurse will be with her all the time.” I said.

I knew he was concern with my mom, since he knew my mom very well.

" Do they pay you well?" he asked curiously.

I looked at him and gave him protest expression. 

" I mean... You leave your mother to do summer job, is it worthed the money? " he said. 

" We are not in the court Josh." I said. 

" I know that. I just ask you if you make a good decision, Anna. " he said. 

" Yes, they pay me well. " I told him

I hoped he didn't ask how much, because I was not going to answer that. He would be surprised if he knew how much Mr. Mason would pay me for this summer job. 

He nodded. He looked around and his eyes catched the suitcase I put on the floor next to my bed.

“ When will you leave?”

" Tomorrow." I answered shortly

" That soon?" he asked again. 

" Yeah. It's only for 2 months thou." I said

“ Are you sure you have checked the unwell known bank well? It looked suspicious to me.” He said, starting his argument.

“ Yes, its fine. “ I answered.

“ What the bank name once again?” He asked me frowning his brows.

“ Its… Mediterranean Bank.” I just said.

“ Anyway, I have to go early in the morning tomorrow and I feel really tired right now.” I said, yawning in purpose to made him leave.

" I guess I won't be seeing you around this summer. " he said. 

" Its only 2 months thou, don't be mushy" I said.

" I'm not being mushy." he said.

" Yes, you are. Now, I really need to sleep.” I said with sleepy eyes.  

“ Alright, im leaving” he said as he walked to the window.

" What time will you go tomorrow? Do you want me to drive you?" he asked me, stopping his step in front of my window. He still think about my leaving tomorrow. 

" I leave early in the morning. And I have the company car pick me up." I said to him. 

He looked surprised and wanted to asked me something but he undid it. 

" I guess you got a big deal this time" he said and smiled. 

" Sort of" I said. 

" Okey Anna, I guess I'll see you in two months?" He said. 

" Yup. Take care Josh" I said to him

“ Can I have a hug at least?” he asked, raising his arms.

“ Sure” I said as I hugged him. And he hugged me back. I'm going to miss my buddy Josh. 

" Call me if you can, OK?" he said as he stepped one foot outside my window.

" OK Josh, bye" I said good bye to him. I watched him climbed down the trellis and walked to his house. He waved his hand before he closed his back door.
