Chapter 4

Anna POV

Bip Bip bip

The sound of my phone alarm woke me up. 

I stretched out my body and yawned. Last day of my exam. Only have 1 more exam today then this semester will last. 

I remembered Josh was here last night. I guess I fell asleep, didn't remember he went out. 

I woke up and did my morning business in my bathroom. Then walked out to check on my mother. She was still sleeping. I went to the kitchen and made us pancake for breakfast. 

After a moment, I heard sounds from my mother's room and I went there to checked on her. She awoke already and tried to sit on her wheelchair. 

" I need to go to the toilet" she said, trying to reached the handle of her wheelchair. I walked fast and help her, put her on the wheelchair and then  pushed it to her ensuit bathroom. 

I helped her get inside and put her on the toilet seat

" It's fine honey, you can leave me here." she said. 

" Okay, call me when you are done mom." I told her. 

She nodded and I left her in the bathroom. I close the bathroom door and prepare for her clothes. She called me after a few minutes and then I help her to took a bath. I put on her clothes and took her to the living room to wait for me prepare for our breakfast. I turned on the TV for her and gave her the remote.

“Here you go mom” I said.

I continued cook our breakfast for a few minutes and we ate together once the breakfast ready. 

I called Mr. Mason after everything was done. 

" Good morning Mr. Mason." I greeted him. 

" Good morning Anna. I've been waiting for your call." he said. 

" Yes Mr. Mason. I've been thinking, Do you mind to tell me what kind of job is it Mr. Mason?” I asked him about the job he offered me. 

" I can't tell you on the phone for its confidentiality. We should meet and discuss it further. Do you have any time available today Ms. Hart?" he asked for a meeting to discuss the job. 

"I have exam until 11 and have free time before 4." I told him about my schedule today. 

" That's great Ms. Hart. Meet me at Red bean restaurant at 11am." he said our meeting schedule and place. 

" OK Mr. Mason. I think I could make it " I told him

" Ms. Hart, I appreciate if you keep it closed about our meeting today. " he said. 

It mades me curious. Why he didn't want anyone else to know about the meeting? What so confidential about it?

Then again, I needed better job and a good income salary. Met him in public restaurant at a daylight won't be harm. Finally I agreed with him and told him I will meet him at the restaurant. 

I took a shower and got ready. I wore my halfsleeve black dress and black pump, and then put on a light make up. I'll be meeting Mr. Mason today after exam. 

I walked down the stairs and passed my mom on the living room, she was watching TV.

" You looked nice. Any occasion?" my mother asked. 

" I have a job interview mom. Wish me luck." I said to her and kissed her cheek. 

" Another job?" my mom asked again. 

" Yes mom, only for summer." I said

" Good luck honey and don’t get to tired ok?" my mom said in concern. 

“ No worry mom” I said smiling.

I walked out the door and headed to my car

" Anna?" Josh called me. He held my shoulder and turned me around to face him

He looked surprise when he looked at me. 

" Where are you going?" he asked looking at my unusual clothes. 

" I have a job interview." I said.

" What company?" he asked me as he held his backpack on his shoulder.

" It's.... a bank." I said lying to him. I remembered Mr. Mason told me to keep it secret.

" You applied at a bank?" he said standing beside me 

" Yeah, just for summer." I said as I opened my car door. 

" Ok, good luck then." he said.

" Thanks" I said as I entered my car and started the engine. 

He waited for me to go before he walked to his car and drove away.

I finished my last exam. I pretty sure I can answered all the question.

Now it's time to meet Mr. Mason.

I still wondered what kind of job he offered me. I hoped it was a decent job. I needed some extra money for my mother's rehab and medicine. 

I drove the car to the Red Bean restaurant. It looked luxury from outside. I entered the restaurant and walked to the reception. 

" Welcome to Red Bean restaurant. Did you have any reservation Miss?" the receptionist asked me. 

" Yes, I'm here to meet Mr. David Mason." I said to her. 

" Yes, Mr. Mason already waited for you Ms. Hart. Will you follow me?" the woman said. And I followed her. 

We walked into the restaurant to the second floor and then walked outside at the terrace. 

I saw Mr. Mason sat in one of dining chair on the terrace, talking to a young man with black suit. No other people there. The receptionist woman took me to him. 

" Mr. Mason, Ms. Hart is here." she said

" Welcome Ms. Hart, How are you doing? " Mr. Mason welcome me. He and the other man stood up.

We shaked hands and the reception woman excused her self. 

" I'm fine Mr. Mason. How are you?" I asked him back

" Never been better Miss Hart, Please sit down"

The other man pulled a chair for me to seat. 

Mr. Mason gave a sign to the other man to leave us alone. He walked away and sat in the chair by the fence, far enough for us. 

" About the job that Im going to offer you Miss Hart, is very confidential, you are not allowed to talk about this to anyone." he said.

" If you don't mind to tell me, what kind of job is it Mr. Mason?" I asked him.

" Let's say you are saving someone life" he said. 

I was not sure what he meant by that. I remembered some secret agent movies saving someone life. And Mr. Mason did work in a security agency. 

" You mean like a body guard?" I asked him naively. 

He let a chuckle out of him. 

" Of course not Miss Hart." he said shaking his head. 

" That's relieved Mr. Mason, I don't have the requirement to be that one." I said smiling at him. 

" You would never know what someone capable to do Miss Hart." he said still on his smiling face

" But that's not what I want you to do... for now." He said, started to talked serious. 

" The job I offered you is to pretend and act like someone else." he said it seriously. 

" You mean like a disguise?" I asked him frowning. 

" Something like that." he answered.

I always wondered what kind of job he offered, but never think of this one. It was unexpected.

" Who am I supposed so pretend? And why? " I asked him in high curiousity. 

" I will tell you everything after you agree to the job and sign the contract. But before that, that's the only thing you should know." he explained.

" I'm sorry Mr. Mason,  what did I get for doing this disguise job?" I asked him. I was hesitated to asked that, but I decided to asked him. I needed to know how much money I get to do the job. It was really normal for a job offer right? 

" You will get 50.000 dollar in advance, and 50.000 after you done the job. " he said. 

My jaw dropped to hear the amount of the compensation I got for this job. Thats a lot of money. I never expected that he will pay me that much. 

" Its a full time job Miss Hart. You can't tell anyone. I mean anyone." he pressed on the word 'anyone'. He continued,

" You have to resign from your previous job and stay with us until the job done." he said the terms. 

" I'm sorry Mr. Mason, I can't do that. My mother---" I said thinking of leaving my sick mother alone. 

" We will take care of your mother. We will hire a nurse for her." he said

He will hire a nurse for my mother? Wait, how did he know about my mom?

“ I’m sorry Mr. Mason, how did you know about my mother?” I asked him curiously 

" I'm sorry Miss Hart, I had to do your background check because of its confidentiality. I hope you didn't take offense." he said straightforward. 

He had done my background check. How important this job actually for him? Obviously he had done his homework. 

" Can I visit my mother? " I asked  him

" Like I said, the job is confidential. But, if it's an urgent or it is necessary, I think we can arrange it. As long as you keep the job closed. "he said

" Will I be in a danger situation? " I asked him. I needed to know what I am getting into. I wondered if it was a kind of spionase or secret mission kind of job. 

" No. Its actually to pretend someone who pretty much like your self, Ms. Hart. " he explained.

Like my self? Just pretend like another ordinary person? That's sound easy. 

" And for how long? " I asked him. 

" Probably a week or could be a month or two. It depended on the situation." he told me again, still in serious expression, looking at me carefully.

The time range still covered by my summer break. So I guess the time wasn't a matter. 

" I assure you, it's save and not put you or your mother in danger. And we give you a decent compensation in return. It will be more that enough for you and your mother" he said. 

He leant forward and looked at me seriously.  

" I know you are confuse to this. But I need you to considered it. " he said. I can see that he was sincere and hoped that I took his offer. 

" I should say that your offer is very tempting Mr. Mason, Although I don't have any experience on pretend to be someone else than My self." I told him honestly. I was not sure if I could done such job. 

" You shouldnt be worry about that Ms. Hart." he assured me.

" We will train you and make you ready for your part. We will assist you during the job. You are not going to be harmed. You can have my word Miss Hart." he said

" I know you can do it. " he said convincing me.

Should I trust him? He seemed trustable man. 

" Mr. Mason.... You said I will save someone's life, if I did this. How?" I asked him carefully. 

He was thinking for a while before he answered. 

" Ms. Hart.. The person you are going to saved, had injured badly, mentally and physically. So I need you to pretend to be someone that means a lot for him. To help him gets his live back. That’s all I can tell you right now." he said.

" And if I didn't take the offer? " I asked him. 

" I'm going to be honest with you Miss Hart. Like I said, the women you will be pretended means a lot to the person, if you could do the job, which you are the only one I know who can do the job, it will risk his live. " Mr. Mason explained to me. 

I can see sadness in his eyes when he said that. He must be someone he knew well. 

I'm the only one who can do the job? So if I don't do this, that man can die? 

" I'm the only one who can do the job? Why? " I asked him curiously

" Let's say, you have similarity with her. That's all I can say." he explained. 

I never knew that I looked like someone else. 

" I have to think about it Mr. Mason. " I told him. I can't decided it right away.

" That would be fine Miss Hart. I give you time to think about the offer until tomorrow at the same time like now. We don't have much time, because someone’s life depend on it. " he said and I nodded.

" Thank you Mr. Mason, I will let you know soon." I said before leaving him. 

I think it was a weird job offered. Not everyday someone asked you to disguise as someone else, excepted if you were an agent or spy. 

I'd been thinking about the offer all night. The money was so tempting. I needed that. And he said my mother would be taken care of. And I will save someone's life. Am I worth that much? 

If that man life depended on me, I think I should accepted the job despite the money offered, because what am I if I let someone died, knowing that I can do something about it? Being poor didn't mean to be selfish or thoughtless. 

But can I trusted him? He seemed to be a trustable person. He only gave me a day to think about it.

I think I know what I'm going to do, but I need to tell someone about this. I can't tell Josh nor my mother.
