PART TWO CHAPTER 13 Two and a half weeks later Kennedy pulled her phone out of her backpack. Any time it rang, her heart would start pounding in hopes that it would finally be someone who could give her an update on Ian. “Hello?” “Hi, sweetie. It’s Mom. Did I interrupt something? Are you in the middle of a lecture?” Kennedy let out her breath. She had been so excited and nervous when the phone rang, she’d answered it before even checking the caller ID. “No, I’m finished with my classes for the day.” She was two weeks into her senior year at Harvard and more behind than she’d been in her entire academic career. The campus counselor she’d been seeing for years thought Kennedy had unresolved trauma from her three-day vacation in a Chinese jail, but she hardly thought about that anymore
