7. The London Resistance

Brad I was deliberately going to be late to Dad’s dinner. Just enough to make him think I was standing up so he would be ultimately relieved I came. He had pissed me off with a message easier today. DAD. Reminder 7 pm. Don’t bring a date this time we are meeting Maria’s daughter. DAD. Or do if you wish just let me know so I can warn Georgia. So we were meeting the family too. He hadn’t done this before. Georgia, clearly he had met her already. Which didn’t surprise me. The apple early fell far from the tree when it came to his new money grabbing w*****, instilling the daughter-in-law already. Although this might work in my favour I now had two females to upset and one of them was bound to slip up and expose themselves. The more I rationalised the better I felt about this meeting. I also had great news about the opening of the club. It had smashed expectations. I wasn’t surprised as we have been pretty much full every evening since opening. It was risky opening an American style bar here in the UK. Classically only the large chains did well. We had a few dotted about the US, in cities my Dad liked an excuse to visit. London had been a long time in the pipeline, but fairly recently Dad had spared no expense to make it happen. I was surprised he hadn’t visited if he had been in London. Not that I wanted to see him but he was a bit obsessive about business, hence why he was so successful. I had a dozen messages on my phone. A mate was trying to organise a dash out to Japan for some summer skiing. Most of the group chat were in. I pulled up my calendar, to see if was doable if we left this week. Replying I was in and would see if we could use the jet I was suddenly in a much better mood. Josh replied to say if I could get the jet he was in. He had been odd recently. He was due to graduate same time as me but his head had not been in the game. I thought back to the hot blonde he had met at the club. His girlfriend would not be too chuffed. She had tried desperately to come on this trip with him but he told her it was boys only. It wouldn’t be the first or last time he would cheat on her but it’s was certainly the first time he had repeatedly offended with the same girl. He had even bailed on the party we were meant to go to last night. I thought about going solo but couldn’t be bothered with all the attention. Strangely I didn’t feel the need to go looking for entertainment for the evening. Although if the mysterious Geo had appeared in my bed I certainly wouldn’t have complained. Georgia Mum text me the address for dinner. It was miles away from my apartment so I set of in plenty time. I wore flats as I didn’t care to make much of an impression, and it would be easier to walk home. I had toyed with the idea of buying a car but in London it wasn’t that practical really, the public transport was good enough if I needed it and Patty had one. I appeared at a large mansion in a very nice part of Kensington. I double checked the address on my phone and pressed the buzzer. I gave my name and the gates automatically opened. When I transcended the long drive lined with huge trees I saw Mum standing at the steps to the house, beside a normal looking guy. She was beaming at me and couldn’t wait for me to get to her before she came running down the steps to see me. Her huge engagement ring catching the light. I had to admit while huge it was tasteful. “Mark darling this is my beautiful daughter Georgia.” “Lovely to meet you Georgia, you Mum has told me so much about you. Please come inside and I’ll get you a drink. We have much to celebrate.” I just smiled, thinking she had told me nothing about him. I was so taken aback by the grandeur of the place it wasn’t until he started speaking again that I clocked his accent. “This is my London Resistance, I know you have an apartment in the city but you would be welcome to stay here if you wanted Georgia. I know your Mum would have to have you here. While home is the states, I intend to spend more time here as you Mum doesn’t wish to relocate to just yet.” Coming out of someone else’s mouth this would seem boastful but he seemed genuinely nice. We sat down in the drawing room with a glass of wine. Mum seemed so happy and relaxed my reservations relented slightly. “So Georgia, we have a little place in Italy and I’m afraid you mother has fallen in love with it and wants to get married there. I don’t see the point in us waiting. I mean we aren’t getting any younger and when you meet the right person you just need to grab it with both hands.” Mum smiled and took his hands in hers. It was sickeningly sweet to a unromantic soul like myself but I was pleased for her nontheless. After my second glass of wine my stomach started to rumble. I hadn’t been paid yet so it was slim pickings in my house for lunch. Patty was always happy to share but I tried not to abuse her kind heart. As she spend the day in the bedroom yesterday with Josh she hadn’t had much to steal anyway. “Your mother tells me you have been ivited to Harvard to finished there summer semester soon. I have an apartment nearby if you wanted to use it you would be most welcome.” This was amazing, I had managed to get Patty invited as well, as her Dad would pay for an apartment for her and I could share as I didn’t know how I could afford to go otherwise. University was covering the flights and fees but living expensive were up to the student. “That would be amazing, I am meant to be going with a friend but I might just take you up on that offer.” I was buzzing, maybe Patty could stay with me for change. Finally I could do something for her and she wouldn’t need to suck up to her dad. Mark looked at his watch and sighed. “Looks like my wayward son is late. Let’s go have our starters we can’t let this young lady wait any longer.” We made our way through to a a huge dining room with a massive table set for four. My glass was refilled and a plate of steaming soup placed before me. “Should we wait? I honestly don’t mind.” I asked. “Nonsense, he can go hungry if he doesn’t have the decency to be on time.” Mark replied. I saw a frown on his face. Before I could take a sip there was a commotion coming from the hallway. “I know I am late but don’t you know it’s manners to wait for your guests before eating?” An annoyed voice called across the room. I had my back to the door but got to my feet quickly when I heard Mark choose to to reply to his comment. “Finally my son has decided to grace us with his presence. Brad can I introduce you to my fiancée Maria and her lovely daughter Georgia.” My smile froze when I turned around to see the handsome stranger from two nights ago.
