He has been in that country twice and during those visits, he has Barkis with him since they have a business to attend to. When he is with that man, they are not in leisure. Their time is spent with negotiations, sighting of possible ventures, and socializing with the wealthy to gain more support and influence.
Even if Barkis has every opportunity to expand his business or for a better life than in the countryside, he never left the town of Beauville. He always comes back. Mayhap because of his roots being there. Mayhap because of his surname having the most influence in Beauville which makes common people there look up at him with admiration.
