His eyes locked onto mine with such intensity in his gaze that I almost felt the hair over my skin rising out of fear. My mother didn't notice him immediately, but I did. The atmosphere in the room changed, his presence had a way of shifting the air and now, especially after last night, I wasn't sure when or how his mouth was going to run wild in front of Mom. He didn't speak immediately, instead, he just stood there, letting silence speak volumes. He wasn't looking at Mom but was looking directly at me and it was as if he was sending a signal to me—warning me. "Oh, Cain," Mom turned to him, noticing him for the first time since he entered the kitchen. "How are you doing?" "Fine." he mumbled before finally looking away from me. "That's good. And have you eaten? Do you want anything?"
