Rosalie had slept light since the night she left her family and home behind in Kilmarie. With the returning threat, she had hardly slept a wink for the last two weeks. Florentine left her room just before dawn, trying to avoid creaking floorboards and steps in her stockinged feet. No doubt with her shoes tucked under her arm. Rosalie had memorised the tread of each of her children and all the sounds of her home long ago. She knew who was sneaking in and out as soon as the bedroom door swung open and whispered its warning.
