From the shadows of the trees and iron fence, Clement Benedict watched. To this place his father was drawn, thousands of miles from where he, the ever-obedient son, expected to be, and he still wasn’t sure why—not exactly. His father sprinkled out his secrets like grain to starving sparrows, but kept the most important ones closely guarded beneath his steel grey top hat, secure behind his heavily starched collars and tight silk neck ties.
