"Earth to Dana, Dana to earth?"
Nadine's voice broke Dana out of her reverie as she felt Nadine pluck her forehead.
She looked at her friend. "You're spacing out again. Is something wrong?" Nadine asked her.
Dana let out a deep sigh. Nadine was her best friend. Besides her family, she trusted Nadine the most. She had known her since grade school.
And maybe if she told Nadine about the problem, she might have some suggestions.
"I have a big problem, Nadine," she said in a heavy tone.
"Has something happened to Uncle again?" Nadine asked, concern evident in her face.
She shook her head, furrowing her brow. "What big problem are you talking about, then?" Nadine asked again.
Dana looked around and, seeing no one but the two of them, she continued speaking. "It's about ." She began.
"What about Ate Doreen?"
"I told you before that she got involved with her old boss, right?"
Dana had told Nadine about her sister's relationship with her boss. She had no one else to confide in but her. She didn't want to tell her parents because she didn't want them to worry.
"Are they not together anymore?" Nadine asked.
She nodded. "So, what's the big problem? Shouldn't you be happy that your sister's not with her sugar daddy anymore?"
"The problem is, she stole millions from her boss, and her boyfriend was in on it too."
"What?!" Nadine exclaimed, looking ridiculed.
She immediately hushed her. "Don't be loud," she said.
Nadine covered her mouth. "Sorry," she apologized.
"And my problem is, if she doesn't show up and return the stolen money, we'll have to pay for it."
"Oh, god!" Nadine exclaimed. Dana noticed the disbelief on her friend's face. "I can't believe Doreen would do that."
"Me neither," she said gloomily.
"Do Uncle and Aunt know about it?" Nadine asked after a while.
She shook her head. "I don't want my parents to know what my sister did. You know Dad, just came home from the hospital."
"So, what's your plan?"
"I don't know. I've tried calling Doreen several times, but her number is unattended. It looks like she changed her number. And I don't have that much money,” she told her. "And the CEO's lawyer only gave me a week."
Her friend fell silent, she was deep in thought. But after a while, she spoke. "What if you personally talk to your sister's boss?" she suggested. "Maybe he'll show pity on you. After all, it's your sister who's at fault, not you."
"What if he doesn't listen to me?"
"What if he does listen and pity you? Nothing will happen if you don't try, Dana. And you won't lose anything if you do. At least you tried."
Well, her friend had a point. Talking to him was her only way to solve the problem. No matter what she did, even if she borrowed money from a lending company, she wouldn't be able to pay back a million dollars.
Dana let out a deep sigh. And she told her friend about her decision regarding her suggestion.
"You can do it, Dana," her friend encouraged her.
She just smiled. Yeah, she have to do it.
Dana couldn't help but feel anxious as she stepped out of the cab she had been riding. She felt her hands sweating as she looked at the David Empire building. Dana traveled to New York to speak with the owner of the David Empire. She took a deep breath before walking inside the building. She felt even more nervous when she entered, especially with the cold air shivering her skin. Even though she’s wearing a cardigan, she still felt the cold.
Dana continued walking until she reached the reception area. She told the receptionist her purpose and was asked for her ID, which she immediately gave.
After that, she walked towards the elevator. She quickened her pace when she saw that the elevator was about to close. She placed her hand on the door to prevent it from closing completely.
Just as she was about to enter the elevator, she paused when she noticed the man inside. She looked up at his face and noticed that he was frowning. However, despite his frown, she couldn't deny that the man was handsome. From his thick eyebrows, his straight nose, to his full lips. His eyes were deep black. He was tall and imposing. He was wearing a white long-sleeves shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. She could also see the small hairs in his arms and the veins. He was beyond perfect, models and actors paled in comparison to his handsomeness.
After a while, she blinked her eyes when the man spoke. "Are you coming in or not?" he asked in a baritone voice.
"Oh... sorry," Dana said before she entered the elevator. She secretly scolded herself for her reaction. She was stunned just because she saw a handsome man. Darn, embarrassing. Who knows what the man would think of her.
She entered the elevator, and the door closed. She was about to press the button when she stopped. She didn't know which floor the owner's office was on. She hadn't asked the receptionist earlier. She mentally scolded herself, then mustered up the courage to turn and look at the man behind her.
And she was caught off guard when she saw that the man was still looking at her. His expression still furrowed.
"Hi," she said, raising her hand slightly. "Um, can I ask? Which floor is the office of the owner of this building?" She asked, noticing the raised eyebrow of the man. He didn't answer, instead, he just stared at her. "Hello?" She prodded him when he didn't respond to her question.
"15th floor," he replied shortly.
She smiled. "Thank you," she answered, turning away and pressing the button for Franco's office from where she stood. And from her position, even without turning, she could still feel the intense gaze of the man. It looks like he was checking her out. She glanced down at what she was wearing at that moment. She was wearing fitted jeans, a white sleeveless top, topped with a gray cardigan. She also had on flat sandals.
She couldn't stay still in her place. She was anxious as the elevator she was riding kept going up, and being next to the handsome man behind her made it worse.
So what Dana did was take a step back to get out of his sight slightly. But it was unintentional that their arms brushed against each other. She couldn't help but look at him when she felt an electricity flow through her body just from their skin touching.
The man also turned to her. And based on his facial expression, it seemed like he felt what she also felt.
She just averted her gaze because she couldn't handle the kind of stare he was giving her. She felt like she was drowning in his gaze, as if he’s going to eat her soul.
Dana breathed a sigh of relief when the elevator stopped at the 15th floor. And when the door opened, she quickly stepped out of the elevator. It was only then that she let out the breath she had been holding in and before the elevator closed, she glanced back at him and noticed that he was still looking at her. He disappeared from her view when the elevator closed completely.
Dana instinctively placed her hand on her left chest when she felt her heart race. She didn't even run to feel that way. She just let out a deep sigh. After that, she walked to find Franco's office.
When a woman approached her, she talked to her. "Excuse me," she said. "Where is Mr. David's office?" she asked.
"The whole floor is the Accounting Department. Mr. Franco's office is on the 20th floor," the woman replied.
"Oh," she only said upon hearing that. It seemed like the man she talked to earlier didn't tell her the truth. He could have been handsome, but he was a liar.
A part of her brain defended the man, saying that he might not know where Franco's office was.
"Okay, thank you," she replied.
Dana went back to the elevator and pressed the 20th floor button. It didn't take long for her to arrive at the 20th floor where she intended to go.
She approached a woman she saw there, who was busy in front of her computer. "Excuse me, Miss.” She got her attention. The woman looked up.
"Yes, Ma'am?"
"Hmm... my name is Dana. Can I speak with Mr. David?" she asked.
"Do you have an appointment with him, Ma'am?" she asked back.
She bit her lower lip, then shook her head. "No. But can I talk to him?"
"I'm sorry, Miss, but Sir Franco is busy right now. He has someone he's talking to."
"Can I talk to him after he’s done?" she insisted.
"I'm sorry, Miss, but he doesn't talk if there's no appointment."
"Is that so?" She said, looking like she had no chance of talking to him now. "But can I set an appointment with him?"
She nodded, giving her courage. "Just give me your full name and your contact number."
She gave what she asked for. After she wrote it down, the door of Franco's office opened.
Her eyes widened when she saw the man she had been with in the elevator earlier. She noticed that he briefly paused when he looked in her direction. She then averted her gaze and looked at the older man who came out of the door next. Based on the man's demeanor and appearance, it looked like he was Franco, the person she was there for that day.
She also noticed from the corner of her eye that the woman she talked to earlier stood up.
