Being on meant being alert. The absolute only time a lifeguard could be off their game was when they were sick enough not to be on the sand. It was something of a natural need to always be on as an Alpha. It secured the notion that they could always be relied on, no matter the weather or circumstances, they were prepared.  Shane did not feel prepared. Despite knowing his job, where the drop offs were, sudden changes of atmosphere and how it would impact the beach goers as well as the marine life, he couldn’t help but feel off kilter.  His ears rang while others ran off around him to their positions. Shane worked in silence like a machine, wishing his Alpha would stop racing him around to get back to her. He forced them to think about how it made him feel to not be there for her properly
