1.1: Dimitri
Dimitri didn’t know where Mama had dragged them to last night, but she was gone again, and they left him alone in a tent with nothing to eat or do. Hearing the tent door opening, he went into a sleeping bag that had been thrown at his face as they arrived at the tent. “f*****g bastard, you said it would be out here!” Mama snapped. “I don’t need this woman,” a man snapped. “That’s right bastard, leave!” Mama shouted. Dimitri pulled himself out of the sleeping bag, peering around the tent. “Mama?” Dimitri asked. “Shut up, you little piece of s**t,” she hissed, falling onto her knees, a small white bag falling out of her pocket. He had once asked her what it was, but she had snapped at him it was ‘sugar for adults only’. “Arina, you worthless b***h,” a man said, coming into the tent. Elijah, Dimitri, knew this man. He would come over to their apartment several times a week, and he arrived. Dimitri would be given to the neighbour, but he didn’t want to think about Mr Black much. “Elijah, William was sure something was here,” Mama said, Dimitri looking at Elijah and his red eyes. It was the same shade as his own, along with his dark raven hair and pale skin. “You owe me a lot of green woman,” Elijah said. “Mama?” Dimitri said as he spotted a shadow going past their tent, crawling away from the wall. “I said shut up,” Mama snapped as she slapped him across the fact Elijah looked at her before doing the same. Elijah looked at Dimitri and then looked at Mama before grinning. “What do you want, you supernatural freak?” “So you didn’t lose the babe?” Elijah asked. “Mama?” Dimitri asked as the shadow appeared behind Elijah before disappearing a second later. “I wouldn’t talk to my son like that,” Elijah said. “Then you owe me nine years of child support,” Mama snapped. “For you to blow it on your drugs? I aren’t stupid,” Elijah said. “Mama!” Dimitri shouted. In between blinks something had ripped the tent apart, Mama and Elijah being pulled out so quickly that Dimitri never saw it, more so since the tent collapsed on top of him. He could hear screams before he closed his eyes, blacking out. “Mama?” Dimitri said, opening his eyes, looking around. He spotted William’s body on the ground, his neck was twisted and broken. The camping grounds were a mess, and he fell onto his knees. “Mama? Mama?” “Of course there’s a Wendigo near a La Sayona,” a woman said, golden eyes looking at him as he crawled out from under the tent. He had been staring at William’s body in silence for hours. “A child, crap.” “Mama?” She looked at him before walking towards him, sitting down a few meters from where he was. Dimitri looked at her, before copying the way she was sitting with her legs crossed. “Mama’s dead,” Dimitri said. The woman looked at him before nodding, and he just stared at her. “Do you have anyone who can look after you?” she asked. “No.” “No grandparents?” “Dead.” “Aunts? Uncles?” “Mama was an only child.” “Hang on,” she said as she pulled a tablet from her bag. He watched as she looked at something before saying something that he didn’t understand. “Arina Volko, parents fled from the USSR before it fell in the nineties. No siblings, Dimitri Volko has no known father and is registered under the Supernatural Act of 1895.” “Supernatural Act?” “Sorry Dimitri, I forgot you were there for a moment. My name’s Rhoswen Gwyndraig, but you can call me Rosy,” Rosy said. “What’s going to happen?” Dimitri asked. “I know someone who can look after you. He’s a Supernatural... like us, but he stays in one place unlike myself,” Rosy said. Dimitri went to ask something, but then his stomach growled at him. “When was the last time you ate?” “Don’t know.” “I can make breakfast, but we’ll have to go to my house.” “You live out here?” “Nope, I live on a bus.” “A bus?” “Yup, want to see it?” “Yes.” Rosy smiled before picking him up, walking away from the campsite as she hummed something under her breath. Putting his head on her shoulder, it felt like his mind was slowing down. “Breakfast?” Rosy asked as she walked onto a bus. Dimitri had rarely gone on a bus, only when Mama couldn’t push him onto a willing neighbour. “What would you like?” “Food,” Dimitri said. “And food it will be, a toasted cheese grilled sandwich,” Rosy said as she placed him onto the floor. He spotted a table and sat at it as he looked around with a slightly open mouth. “Here we are.” “Thank you,” Dimitri said as she sat in front of him, a phone in her hands. He could see that she was writing on the keypad. “It won’t take long to get to Mikhail’s house.” “Mikhail?” “He’s a Supernatural like us, looks like a shark and doesn’t leave his house much because of it.” “He eats people?” “Nope, but he owns a technology company... or at least that’s what he told me when I jumped into him ten years ago.” “Jumped into him?” “I was hunting down this annoying Jikininki when I finally got my sword into its heart... well, I had already jumped over his giant ass brick wall and landed on him.” “What’s a Jin...” Dimitri couldn’t say it, but it looked like she knew what it meant from the sad smile she gave him. “They’re creatures that eat corpses,” Rosy said. “Yuck!” “I very much agree with on that one.” “Why?” “The Jikininki was once a living person, someone who in their soul was greedy and selfish. When they die, they're cursed to forever eat corpses and food offerings for the dead,” Rosy said with a nod, clicking her fingers before pulling her tablet out of her bag and showing him a picture. “They’re not beautiful to look at.” “And Mama?” “A Wendigo got her and the person she was with.” “They are?” “They’re like the Jikininki in a way. Apart from the fact that they go after the living and their people who started eating people when alive.” “Yuck.” “Again, Dimitri, I can’t find it in my heart to disagree with you.” Rosy grinned as she looked at her phone, but sighing. “I’ll be dropping you off at Dimitri’s, which means you’re going to be stuck with me for a few hours.” “You’re nicer than, Mr Black.” “Mr Black?” “We have a secret.” “That doesn’t sound good. I’m just going to send a message to someone and we’ll get going.” “Really?” “Yea, but I want to tell you something.” “What?” “It’s not your fault, okay? No matter what anyone says, it was never your fault. Promise me you’ll remember that.” “Okay.” “You can play some games on my tablet. It’s going to be a long road trip with a few stops.” -- Dimitri didn’t know when he fell asleep, but remembered Rosy making him lunch before giving him an iced chocolate. He had never tried it before, and Rosy looked at him with blank eyes before muttering to herself, but promised that she wasn’t mad at him as tucked him in the enormous bed in the back. “We’re here,” Rosy said as she was gently shaking him awake. He blinked at her as she grinned. “Mikhail’s waiting for us.” “Really?” Dimitri asked. “Yes, he’s been texting me all day. That man’s about to drive me up the wall in his worry,” Rosy said with a huff. “He wants to make sure you like him.” Dimitri looked at her as he took her hand, following her as they left her house on wheels. A man standing near a tree, he had a slight grey tone to his skin and his eyes reminded Dimitri of the sharks he had seen in the rare books in the Wilkeson’s apartment. When Sarah Wilkeson’s would watch him, she was a young woman at university, but she’d always save time for him when she can. She was studying to become a nurse. “Long time no see Mikhail,” Rosy said as he hid behind her leg and he looked at her. He didn’t know if he was going to be like Mr Black or like Elijah. “Dimitri, I would never hand you over to someone who’d hurt you. I’d sooner saw off my leg.” “She’s staying the night. We can put another bed in your home,” Mikhail said. Rosy looked down as he stared at her. “You know what? Why I don’t for the rest of the month?” Rosy asked, as she stared at Mikhail. “It’s about time I took Christmas off. Your air conditioning is better than mine is.” “Easy fix,” Mikhail said. “Christmas?” Dimitri asked. “You said he was eight,” Mikhail said. “He is,” Rosy said. “Rosy, I’m hungry,” Dimitri said. Mikhail and Rosy stared at him before Rosy smiled, and they walked into the large house. Mikhail walking towards the kitchen as Rosy looked in the cupboard. “I can make Teisennau Tatws, along with Selsig Morgannwg,” Rosy said with a grin. “Glamorgan Sausages and Potato Cakes.” “They’re Welsh dishes. Rhoswen doesn’t get to cook them often,” Mikhail said, nodding towards another room. “Just sing out if you need anything,” Rosy said anything as he followed Mikhail into a dining room. “I’ll hear you.” “She will. She has superhuman hearing,” Mikhail said as he sat down, Dimitri sitting across the table. “Why don’t we get to know each other? We can learn while learning decorate for Christmas.”
