Mated to my human best friend. Chapter four. Kate. Ring! Ring!! Ring!!! My phone starts ringing. I rummaged through the bag for it, and when I got it, the call already ended. I check who the caller was, hoping it was my dad, but it was Kyle. Oh, why is he calling me? The phone starts ringing again and I pick up. "Hello, where are you?" He demands. "Why? Why do you care to know where I am?" I replied. "What do you want?" "I need to talk to you, Kate. We need to talk," he said. "But I don’t want to talk to you," I answered. "Can you just let me be and go comfort your girlfriend?" "I don’t seem to understand you anymore, Kate," he mumbles. "Why are you doing this? Tell me where you are. We need to talk." "Fine. I will be at my apartment after buying what I need. You can drop by later if you want," I put my phone back inside my bag when we finished talking. I don’t know if he’s going to believe me or not, and I don’t want to see him hurt if I tell him the truth. I'm a bit confused right now about this messed-up situation. I head to the grocery store to get what I need for cooking. I’m exhausted and sweating from carrying the heavy grocery bags. I need to get myself a car soon. I met Kyle at my doorstep. Why is he not waiting inside? "Why are you not inside?" I inquired. "I thought you had a spare key to my home," "Sorry. I forgot it at home," he murmurs. "Let me help you with these," He helped me with my bags. I open the door, and we both walk in. "I need to cook, but before that, I want you to tell me what brings you here. What do you want to say?" I ask. I need to get this over and done with. "Kate, I trust you, believe me," he began, "but I need to know why you beat up those girls. Is it exactly how Tina told me or was she lying?" "I guess she was telling the truth. Did I not demonstrate how I beat them for you?" I replied. "By the way, why are you here?" Are you not supposed to be with your girlfriend?" "No, stop lying, Kate. I don't believe that. I have known you for the past two years," he said. "You’re my friend, and I know what you can do. I want you to tell me the truth about the whole matter. Nothing but the truth," "I want you to stop asking me this, Kyle. I've already shown you how it went down. Did you not see the way I beat up your precious Tina?" "I can see that, Kate!" he exclaims. "But I have this feeling that she was lying." "Where’s she?" I asked. "You mean Tina?" He inquired. "I left her at the school. I tried talking sense into her brain, but she isn't understanding me. I told her I needed to talk to you, but she strongly opposed it. She gave me an ultimatum. Forced me to choose between you two," "I don’t want to be the reason why you guys are going to break up," I whisper. "You don’t need to choose me, Kyle," "Kate-" "You need to go back to her," I walk to the door and open it. "You can leave now. See yourself out," "Please, Kate, tell me the truth," he mutters. "Are you forcing me to throw you out?" I asked, "Please leave," He gives it a rest and heads out of my apartment. I slammed the door shut and fell on the couch. Kyle was my only friend here. He’s my everything. Kyle is more like a brother and family member to me. I don’t want to hurt him. I know how much he loves her. He always talks about her and how he wants to build a future with her. He wants to marry her and have kids with her. Why did he choose to leave her and come over here to find out the truth? Is he stupid or what? Why did he choose Tina to break up with him because he wants to know the truth? What's going on in his mind? "You don’t need to think about him," My wolf said, "We should be preparing and looking forward to how we are going to meet our fated mate, instead of you thinking about that human guy, and we should stop being friends with him. Our mate won’t like it if we are friends with a male," "I am not eager to meet our mate. I’m only interested in meeting the person behind this voice. I can’t wait to see you, Wolfy," "Don’t you dare talk like that! You will get to see me, but getting to know our mate is our priority," she said. "You should stay away from that guy you call your friend," Why is everyone telling me to stay away from Kyle? Not my wolf again. "I don’t want to. He's the brother I never had. Why should I leave my best friend just because you asked me to?" "I won’t do that! Why should I stop being friends with him? Why should I abandon my friend for a mate I have never met?" "What are you talking about, Kate?" She asked in a burning voice. "Do you want our mate to become unhappy when he sees that he kisses and hugs you like he always does? I can accept him kissing you, but what about our mate?" "Chill, wolfy! We are yet to meet this mate of ours, so why should I stay away from Kyle?" I ask. "I will make my mate understand that Kyle is my friend," "Your choice, but I’m not gonna accept that my darling," she whispered. I try talking some sense into her, but she remains adamant. I stood up to make myself some food. My phone rang while I was in the kitchen. I don’t have to worry about myself. I know it must be Kyle. My phone kept ringing and ringing, and it started making me angry. Oh, my God. What’s wrong with this guy? Must I tell him the cause of the fight between me and his girlfriend? Ring! Ring!! Ring!!! My phone rings again. I stormed to the living room, thinking to yell at him over the phone, but I was wrong. The caller is someone else. It’s my Father. "Hello, dad," "My darling daughter, I keep calling and calling. Why are you not picking up my calls? He asks."What happened to you?" "I’m sorry, dad." I said, "I’m busy in the Kitchen," "It’s okay. How are you, my little girl? How’s school?" "I’m good, dad. How about you? I ask, "How are you?" "Same as you. You will be 18 in a month. I can’t wait for you to come to the pack to meet and choose your mate." I roll my eyes. Did he just call me because of this? "I know," I respond. "You sound unhappy. Is something wrong?" "No, dad. I’m good," "Are you serious? I can sense you are not happy," "I’m happy, Dad. I was just thinking how wonderful it will be if my mother is present on the day I get to meet my wolf and mate. I want her to see me shift into my wolf form," "I can’t wait to meet my son-in-law," My Father says instead, purposely ignoring what I just said. I knew it. I knew he was going to change the topic. Is mentioning my mother taboo to him? "Dad, please, don’t try to change the topic," I cry out. "When am I going to meet my mother? I will be 18 soon, and I still don’t know who my birth mother is. Why are you like this?" "I need to attend to some pack stuff," he says. "I’m going to talk to you later," "Wait! Dad!" My father hung up the call. I still don’t get it. Why is he always changing the topic whenever I talk about my mom? I will have to go back to the pack and talk to him. This time around, I’m not letting the matter slide easily. I have to know who my mother is. Every child with a mother in the pack used to make me jealous. I see how they care about their child. I also want to experience my mother's love as well. My father does his best to fill my mother's role in my life. He tries all he can to act like a mother. He shows me all the care a mother can show to her child, but it's never going to be enough. I want my mother. I want my mother's warm hugs. Why is my Father not talking about my mother? Who is she? Why do I have to live my life with no knowledge of her? Just why?
