Chapter 06 The Alpha’s Betrayal

~ Luan ~ “Ready?” he asked, and I nodded. I squeezed his fingers painfully hard as he led me out of the room, for the first time since I got back from the infirmary. Planting my feet firmly on the floor, I forced him to stop. “What’s wrong?” “I can’t do this,” I replied. “Cupcake, I won’t always be with you. And I don’t want you to spend the rest of your days cooped up in a room. I promise he won’t hurt you. Please … trust me on this.” Ky always spoke softly to me. He was too kind, too patient, sometimes I convinced myself that this was a dream. “Fine,” I mumbled. He ruffled my hair and tugged at my arm. “Thank you.” It took a long time to go down the stairs. Ky patiently guided me until we reached the first floor – a very silent floor. “Where is everyone?” I asked, goosebumps running through my skin. It was just me, him, and a friend. “I told them to vacate the packhouse for now and return by lunchtime. I figured you’d be uncomfortable around them,” he said, nonchalantly. “They’re either on the training grounds or the gardens.” I frowned. “You can’t do that.” “I just did.” “They’re your pack. You shouldn’t do that to them just for me.” I hated myself for considering them. They didn’t deserve a kind person like him, but not everyone in the pack laid their hands on me. Most of them pretended I didn’t exist, shoving me to the side when I got in their way. “Until they learn their lesson, they won’t get anywhere near you without me or Raphael around,” he said sternly. As if on cue, a man’s voice joined the conversation. “Good morning, Alpha, Luna.” He had a deep voice, and I imagined he had the built to go with it that he could easily snap my neck or pin me down easily. “Just in time,” said Ky. “Cupcake, meet Raphael. He’s a good friend of mine and is one of our highly ranked warriors. I have no doubt he’ll fail in what I ask of him.” “It’s a pleasure to be assigned to you, Luna,” he said. Raphael sounded familiar, but I couldn’t pinpoint when I heard his voice. I simply nodded my head and smiled faintly. “Come have breakfast,” said Ky, leading me to a dining table. I felt for the wooden table then slowly sat. Raphael sat in front of me; his scent was surprisingly of freshly fallen rain. Ky opened the fridge then the buttons of the microwave sounded. After a few minutes, a sound came, indicating that the food was ready. “I know it’s too early, but I made you lasagna,” said Ky as he placed a plate in front of me. My stomach grumbled in response, and they both chuckled. I swiped my hand across the table and found the fork. Dabbing a few times at the plate, I managed to cut out a piece. It smelt so yummy. Him cooking something this good for me, it made me feel special. I always did the cooking around here; it was nice to be on the waiting side for once. I ate mouthfuls like it was the first time I was eating lasagna. “This taste so good, Ky. Thank you!” I think he can cook it better than me. The sauce was perfectly balanced, the pasta perfectly cooked, and the cheese, generous! “Glad you like it,” he said, patting my head. I ate in silence, savoring the food. This was the best lasagna I ever had! “Ah,” I exclaimed, suddenly remembering we had company. “Is Raphael eating too?” “I am, Luna,” he answered, chuckling. “Don’t mind me. I have to say, Kyhan, I didn’t expect this from you.” “Samesies! Who knew he can cook?” There was silence for a few seconds before Raphael laughed. “You underestimate me. I can also bake,” Ky said proudly. I turned to my side to face him. “You can bake?” I squealed, fists meeting below my neck. This was exciting news – I didn’t know how to bake. I always wanted to learn, but somehow, I was forbidden to learn, and it was tasked to the Omegas. “What can you make?” “Cakes, macaroons, pies… cupcakes?” he replied. I reached out to hold his hand, but my hands came in contact with his chest instead. Following his seemingly sexy torso, I found his hand and held it between both of my own. “Please… please… please… teach me?” He let out a small laugh. “You don’t know how to bake?” I shook my head. “Will you teach me? I mean, if you have the time since you’re busy and all. I can totally wait. I promise I learn quick. I mean, sure, it’ll be different for me since I can’t see, but-“ I was interrupted by his lips, lightly pressing on my forehead. “Your first lesson begins tomorrow.” “Thank you, Ky!” I squealed, then wrapped my arms around him and swayed side to side. “I promise I won’t disappoint you!” I was grinning from ear to ear. Baking was my Mom’s favorite in the world, and she loved to make us chocolate chip cookies and chocolate crinkles! My mouth watered at the thought of recreating those goodies, if I could. There wasn’t a time that she made something bad in the kitchen. “Disappoint me? I’ll never see you as a disappointment, cupcake,” Ky said gently, then kissed my forehead, again. His minty breath blew on my lips; I sensed that he was closer now. “Mind if I get another serving?” asked Raphael and Ky groaned in annoyance. I giggled; this was probably making Raphael uncomfortable. “Can you get me one too?” I asked, raising my plate. “Please?” He lifted my plate from my hands. “Of course.” Eyes watched me as I ate, and I tried my hardest to ignore it. This needed getting used to, but as the days went by, my condition forced me to rely on my instincts and other senses. I’d like to think I was getting the hang of it, though I hoped I could get my sense of sight back. After breakfast, Raphael insisted on doing the dishes. He didn’t seem so bad. “I have to work now. I trust you’re comfortable with Raphael?” asked Ky. “You have nothing to worry about,” I replied. “Right, Raphael?” “Right.” “I’ll see you when I’m done,” Ky said as he let go of my hands. “Thank you for trusting me, cupcake.  After a quick peck on my lips, his footsteps faded, then got louder as he climbed the stairs, then the sound of the tap running was all that I heard. I touched my lips, my cheeks hot. My first kiss… Raphael suddenly broke the silence. “He adores you, Luan. You know that right?” “I … guess,” I replied. Goddess, he kissed me. “First time?” My cheeks reddened. I couldn’t help but smile. “I’ll take that as a ‘yes’,” he said, chuckling. “Besides training, I usually spend my time reading books and watching TV.” Again, we had something in common! “I love books, too! What genres are you into?” This was great – someone I could talk to about books. I could spend hours talking about it with Ky but having this conversation with a friend hit different. Friend? “Nah. I ain’t telling you,” he replied. I pouted. At least he wasn’t being awkward with the PDA. He was … nice. “Why not?” “You’ll laugh at me, Luna,” he replied. The tap turned off and I felt his presence beside me. “My top three are mystery, romance, and fantasy. What’s yours?” There was no way out for him. “I read those three the most,” he replied, and my heart jumped. Where have you been all my life, you magnificent being! I lost track of time as we chatted about anything related to books. I wasn’t allowed to watch films with the pack, so I was glad he didn’t bring up movie adaptations. Sometimes, I’d hear the same title from the omegas, and I wanted to watch it too but couldn’t. Now, I really couldn’t. “Where are we now?” I asked. I linked my arm with his – thick and hard – he was definitely all muscle. We were outside the packhouse. I figured as long as we stayed far from the training grounds, and he was with me, it was safe to walk around for a bit. “The river, Luna. We’re standing by the bank right now,” he answered. “My name’s Luan. My friends used to call me ‘Lue’ though,” I said, hoping he’d get the hint. “My friends call me ‘Raph’. Your name means ‘warrior’. And you already know by now that they’re not friends of yours.” Before I could reply, he added, “My wolf’s Russ. He says it’s nice to meet you.” I wonder what his wolf looked like. Both their names made them sound tough. “It’s nice to meet you too, Russ,” I said. “My wolf’s Leila, but I like to call her Sparkle. She’s quite sassy, and a pain to deal with most of the time.” “I get that.” Raph agreed. We were friends now… “What’s the river like?” I asked. “It’s been so long since I last came here.” “Clean and crystal clear, you can see your reflection and the fishes that live there,” said a voice that made me freeze. I clung tighter to Raph, and he patted my hand in assurance. “Hello, Luan,” said Samuel. “Can we talk? I promise it won’t take long. Just please hear me out.” My breathing hitched in my throat and knees weakened. I moved to hide myself behind Raph, hoping his broad back would hide me from my brother. “There’s your answer,” said Raph, his tone cold and threatening. Samuel growled and I whimpered. My hands started shaking. He was pissed – and he’d beat me harder in that mood. “Please, Luan,” he said in a pleading voice. “I’m sorry. Just please hear me out. I’m really sorry.” I covered my ears with both hands as I shook my head. I didn’t want to hear it. He was lying. He was pretending to care so Raph would lower his guard. Ky wasn’t around. We were a distance from the packhouse. This was his chance to punish me. He was Beta – although Raph was huge, I was certain Samuel could still take him down. “She doesn’t want to talk to you,” warned Raph. Boots stepped on gravel, and I took steps back to get away from him. Don’t come near me. Please don’t let him come near me. “Back off, man. Alpha had strict orders. No one’s to talk to her but me,” he growled. I heard a crack. Raph groaned. “I have to talk to her!” yelled Samuel and I flinched. He was so pissed right now. Talk? More like yell. He wanted to yell at me as he gave me the beating of a lifetime. “Luan p-“ Raph grunted and I heard … what sounded as a punch. Similar sounds arose and both of them breathed heavily. A sob escaped my throat at the thought of my only friend fighting Samuel. My feet carried me backward, away from the scene. I could still hear them, and I wish I couldn’t. I couldn’t bear to imagine how painful it was for Raph – I knew what it was like to be at the receiving end of Samuel’s blows. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. Water touched the soles of my sandals and I halted. I was about to step forward when I heard Samuel’s voice again. “Luan!” he screamed. “I’m sorry! I-“ He was interrupted by what sounded like a soft slap. “Back off, Sam!” yelled Raph. “She’s f*****g afraid of you!” Someone’s heavy breathing got louder as he got closer. “Princess…” It was Samuel! My feet were wet, but I continued to walk backward. I didn’t know which other way to go. Maybe if I got deeper into the rivers, he wouldn’t follow me. After all, the water was cold, and he didn’t like to bath using cold water. They continued to fight. Samuel called my name and I flinched whenever he yelled it. I didn’t want him to – it made me remember the times he kicked me. The water reached to my knees, the rapids trying to knock my balance. I didn’t care. The deeper I went, the harder it’d be for him to touch me. “Luan, stop!” Samuel yelled. Raph screamed at me, too. It sent a chill right in my heart. Raph was now mad at me. He got involved in a fight with the Beta because of me. He’d probably team up with Samuel and beat me too. “Luna, please. Stop right there,” said Raph, trying to convince me. Small waves went pass my waist. He was paddling over to me. “I’m coming to get you out. It’ll be alright. I won’t let him near you. I-” “Stay away!” I screamed as fresh tears fell on my cheeks. They were lying. It was stupid of me to trust them. Ky must’ve set this up. He said everyone was either on the training grounds or the gardens. Of course, he’d be in his office so this would look like an accident – a blind girl stupidly drowned herself. He told me he’d get me when “it was done”. This was what he meant – when I was but a cadaver. My heart clenched. I trusted him. I felt it breaking into a million pieces as I realized what kind of fool I had been. He was an Alpha. It was embarrassing for him to be mated to me – a blind, useless, good-for-nothing – the pack outcast. The lasagna was my last meal – no wonder it was that good. I’d been a fool. An i***t. Ky must be smiling in his office right now, knowing his plan would play out perfectly. The water reached my chest now. “Luan, please stop right now!” said Raph. “Princess, please… don’t go any further.” Liars. I will never forgive you … never. I turned my back on them and stopped. “Come over to- Luan!” “Luan!” With my palms together, they parted the surface and I dived. I didn’t know how to swim, but I’d imagine it’d hurt if my head went first, and I didn’t want to feel any pain before I die. Just the cold. The cold waters and the darkness that enveloped me. My lungs felt like exploding. I opened my mouth on instinct but choked instead. I couldn’t breathe. There was something pulling me deeper into the bottom. My lungs felt like exploding as my mouth gaped for air. So … this is how it ends for Luan Laister. XXX
