I wanted the earth to swallow me whole when Avery said that. Roberta was married and I was afraid of making her uncomfortable if my feelings were too obvious to her.
Roberta stared at Avery, and I felt my heart sink.
Then she broke out into a huge smile and shook Avery’s hand.
“It’s very nice to meet you, Avery.” She smiled.
I felt relieved that she was smiling again. It felt like an eternity since I last saw her eyes light up like that.
Joe checked his watch.
“Ready to go?” He asked me.
“Yeah.” I said and wiped my hands on a towel. “I’m just gonna go get my things and then we can leave.”
