Chapter Five: Clouding My Mind.

2710 Words
Leo's POV How would he know my type? As long as they were pretty or sexy or both, I wouldn’t have an issue. But Zoe, she was a whole other level of pretty and sexy. I wonder why she’s a nurse with that kind of face. Logan received a call and stormed out, leaving me with the room that still smelled like Zoe. “Leo?” Logan said, swinging the door open. “We need to leave now!” “Why the rush? What’s wrong?” I asked, getting a little too comfortable on the table. “You remember why I forced you out of your house today, and told you not long ago that we needed to hurry your check up?” Logan stalled, striding towards me. “No.” I confessed. To be honest, if not for Jamie or Logan, I’d have gone bankrupt with the level of my unserious attitude. But then again, I had the money to maneuver through any goddamn situation. “No?” Logan raised an eyebrow. “You don’t remember the models we had recruited for our fashion show were coming for their evaluation today? Geez, Leo” The models. Right. I completely forgot. “Yeah? So?” I said, still not clicking as to why the rush applied to me. “So? Really, Leo?” he scoffed. “You’ve got to get back to the office. We’ve got new models to evaluate, and you can’t skip it. You’ve never skipped an evaluation before, and the investors are going to be there.” Shit. “Do I really have to go?” I muttered, still looking over Logan’s shoulder at the door, hoping Zoe would reappear out of nowhere. But she didn’t, and it was starting to drive me nuts. “Yes, you should.” Logan urged, tugging at my arm and pulling me off the table. “Alright, fine.” I groaned as I picked my shirt up and wore it. I still didn’t want to leave, but Logan pushed me out of the room. Her smell still lingered strong, and as I stepped out, it was faint with the heavy smell of disinfectant. Why was she clouding my mind? I heard Logan talk to me as we made our way out of the hospital, but I didn’t process the word. I couldn’t. Not when the way Zoe pulled herself from my hold and rejected my advances were the only things I could think of. The way she carried herself, that spark in her eyes—I couldn’t get her out of my head. I needed to find out everything about her, and sitting through some model evaluation wasn’t going to cut it. “Dude, we need to go.” Logan said, his voice a bit sharper this time. I didn’t realize I was slowing down in thought. He wasn’t the type to get pushy unless he had to be, and I knew he was right. But damn, I didn’t want to leave. The hallway outside felt like it was a million miles long, and I was dragging my feet the whole way. Logan kept shooting me that look he gives when I’m being stubborn or if he had to intervene when I was in a brawl, which was most of the time. “Leo, this isn’t a game.” His voice cut through my thoughts. “Those models you asked for are high in demand ones, and we can’t be having bad press with them or their managers. Plus, the investors will be expecting you, and the board wants your input.” I sighed. The day hadn’t even started for me. First, they ruined my f**k session with that lady I barely knew, and now that I’ve seen someone who’s caught my interest, I’d have to leave without properly knowing her. Logan was right, but today, I just didn’t give a damn. All I could think about was Zoe—her pretty name, face, voice, and gorgeous body were stuck in my mind like songs and images I couldn’t get rid of. We finally reached Logan’s car, and Timmy was already there, beside the opened backseat ready to go. Logan was practically jogging, trying to get in and get moving. “You know what, Logan?” I said, following his lead. “You go ahead. Check out the new models yourself today. I know you’d do a great job. I trust your taste.” Logan stopped, one hand on the car door, giving me a weird look. “You serious? You’re not done with this s**t? You know how this works. They want you there, not me. Their managers, the investors, and our creative board expect it, and so does everyone else.” I smirked and looked at the ground. He was being too insistent. “Both you and I know the only reason I usually show up is to check out the sexy new talent and see if I can scout one out for myself. Nobody really needs me there. But today, I’ve got other things on my mind.” Logan raised an eyebrow. “Other things? More important than having presentable models launch our clothing line for us? Leo, come on. This isn’t like you at all.” I met his eyes and shrugged. “Please Logan. Just go on without me. I just got out of the hospital, remember? Not exactly feeling up to par for a fashion show today.” He rolled his eyes, clearly not buying it. “A quick check-up and flirting with nurses doesn’t exactly count as a hospital stay, man. Get real.” Then he raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms round his chest. “You’re up to something aren’t you? What’s going on?” If there was one thing I hated about Logan, it would be that he always knew when I got something up my sleeves. He knew me more than I knew myself. “No. What could I possibly have going on here?” I fibbed, shrugging and avoiding his gaze. “Right.” He sounded sarcastically. “Look, Logan,…” I said, giving him my best grin, the one that usually gets me out of any trouble. “You’re my best friend. Do me a solid, just this once. Cover for me, will you?” Logan went silent for a while and was staring at me as if he was trying to find something in my eyes. He later let out a heavy sigh, clearly torn between helping me out and doing what he thought was right. “Okay, fine.” Finally, he caved. “Yes!!! Thank you.” I shouted, pulling his face in for a kiss on the cheeks. “I owe you drinks and p***y tonight.” I wiggled my eyebrows. “You know I don’t do girl pussy.” He pulled from my hold. “And besides, even if you didn’t tell me, I’d still drag your ass out for drinks tonight.” “Yeah, bro. We gotta celebrate.” I whooped, watching Logan pull up a cab. “I know you’re up to something, Leo. And I’m gonna find out.” He shouted from the cab as he drove off. Everyone was in my business, and sometimes I didn’t like it. I slid into the car, and Timmy closed the door after me. Jamie was sitting inside, fiddling with his makeup in the rearview mirror. When he saw me, he quickly adjusted and put on his professional face. He was very petite and very pretty for a guy, with his blonde hair, long eyelashes and large eyes. Sometimes, I mistake him for a teenage girl. He was super professional around me, even though he was my best friend’s boyfriend. Sometimes it bugged me, but he was just doing his job right. “Jamie.” I said, leaning forward in my seat. “I need you to do something important for me.” Jamie’s eyes lit up, and he nodded. “Sure, Mr. Black. What do you need?” “I want you to head back into the hospital.” I told him. “Find the head office and ask for Fiona. I need you to find out everything you can about a nurse named Zoe.” Jamie was good at scoping out information. That was his biggest strength and I knew he was going to do a great job with finding out who sweet Zoe was. That girl had me on a chokehold, and I loved it Jamie’s eyes widened a bit, and he nodded eagerly. “Got it, Mr. Black. I’ll take care of it right away.” “But wait,..” I stopped him as he tried to get out of the car. “Finish your…” I said, circling my face and motioning at his makeup purse. “Okay, sir.” He said, smiling. It wasn’t up to a minute that he finished. He was really good. Jamie hopped out of the car and my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw my pretty ma’s name and face on the screen. I couldn’t help but smile. “Ma? She’s probably missing me already.” “Hey, Ma.” I said, leaning back against the leather seat of the car. “Leonard, my darling boy.” My mother’s warm voice greeted me. Only she called me my full name. “It’s so good to hear your voice. I was starting to think you forgot all about your poor old mother.” There she goes again with the emotional blackmail. I laughed softly. “Forgot about you? Come on, Ma.” “What do you mean by ‘Come on, ma.’, huh?” She teased, making me chuckle. “When was the last time you spoke to your mother? Last month?” “Ma!” I whined. “I just talked to you last night before you went to bed, telling me all about how Suzie and Mick from your favorite reality show won the couple’s game.” “Yes, but what about today?” she said, her tone teasing. “But you know I don’t mean just calls. I mean visiting. You haven’t come home in a long time to see me. I miss you, Leonard.” Her words hit me harder than I expected, and my mood took a nosedive. I hadn’t been to the family house in a long time, and there were so many good reasons for that. Every time I thought about going back there, all I could think of was the being that haunted those walls—the constant reminder of everything I wanted to forget. “I’m not sure I can make it over there anytime soon, Ma.” I replied, trying to keep my voice light, but I knew she could sense the shift in my mood. She sighed softly. “Leonard, you’ve been away from this house since your dad died and haven’t shown your face since. It’s been three months now, and you haven’t thought about how your mother feels?” Ma took a pause and I could hear her fight her tears over the call. I wanted to go, but I just couldn’t. “You know you’re being selfish, right?” my mother raised her voice slightly, her tone filled with sad anger. “You’re punishing me because of her? You know you’re the only child I have near me, yet you treat me as if you lived in another country. I called your brother, and he is coming to town next week. We’re planning a family dinner, but I’d really like to see you before then. It’s been too long.” The mention of my brother coming to town didn’t help my mood. I loved my family, but going back to that house also meant facing that gold-digging cunt Courtney, my wife in name only. The thought of her being there, ruining the mood with her shrill voice, was enough to make me want to stay as far away as possible. “Ma, I’m not punishing you because of Courtney. It’s just that any time I’m there, she’s there, and I don’t want that.” I admitted, my voice a bit more harsh than I intended. “She’ll be there, and you know how that goes. It’ll just ruin the whole thing.” My mother was quiet for a moment before she spoke again. “I know. Which is why I want you here. Courtney isn’t exactly easy to deal with. She’s rude and conceited, but I haven’t thrown her out because she was your father’s choice and his friend’s daughter. We’re stuck with her, and as much as I hate to admit it, there’s nothing we can do about it.” My thoughts drifted back to how this mess of a marriage started. It wasn’t a love story; it was more of a business deal arranged by my father and Courtney’s dad. I never believed in that crap called love—figured it was just a fairy tale—and every woman I met seemed more interested in my bank account, my c**k, and what I could give them. Courtney was a constant reminder of that belief. She’d always want to just f**k and text me for money if she ran out of it. It sounded like what a typical wife would want, but She didn’t give a damn about me, and as such, I didn’t give a damn about her either. We lived separate lives, avoiding each other as much as possible. She was hot, yes. But she was painful to have around. And don’t get me wrong, I loved the s*x part. That was the only thing keeping us together. “Can’t I send Timmy to come pick you up, so that Tony can whip us a nice dinner?” I tried to convince her otherwise. “No!” She was quick and sharp with her response. “I want you here. With me. That isn’t my home. That isn’t your home either. This is your home. Please, Leonard, come over tonight. For me?” I hated it when she did that. “Okay, fine. I’ll come by for dinner tonight.” I said with a heavy sigh. I didn’t want to go, but I knew my mother needed to see me. I know I was going to regret it. “But don’t expect me to stay long. Once Courtney starts her usual crap, I’m out of there.” “Thank you, Leonard.” My mother said, her voice filled with relief. “I know it’s not easy for you, but it means a lot to me. I’ll make sure Courtney behaves herself tonight.” “Good luck with that.” I scoffed and muttered, like she had it in her to ever behave. “I’ll see you later, Ma.” “I love you, darling.” She said softly. “Love you too, Ma.” I replied before hanging up the phone. I stared out the window for a moment, trying to shake off the conversation with my mother. The family house was filled with memories I’d rather forget, but the biggest reason I stayed away was Courtney. She was a walking reminder of everything I hated about my life. Our marriage was a joke, a façade we maintained for appearances’ sake. Most people still thought I was a bachelor, and I saw no reason to correct them. It made things easier for me—no scandals, no tabloids, just me living my life the way I wanted. Free to f**k multiple p*****s and live a life of freedom. I was pulled from my thoughts as Jamie approached the car, a smile on his face and a file in his hand. He’d been quick, and that’s why I kept him around. Jamie was efficient, and he knew how to get things done without asking too many questions. “So, what did you find?” I asked, sounding more eager than I intended as he slid into the front seat. Jamie pulled out the file and handed it over to me. “Her name’s Zoe Williams, Mr. Black.” “Zoe Williams.”
