We live our lives full of emotions, where we have to deal with different kinds of people and memories. Some memories make you laugh while others make you cry, they can make you excited or even scared. They could cause you to be so frightened that you do not even want to think about it, but how was that possible? Could we really forget our past, the bad times that terrified us? That haunted us?
Life was unpredictable. No one could tell what destiny had in store for us, sometimes it could be good and sometimes it could be horrific. But were we ready to accept it? Were we even prepared to handle these things? Actually, we all thought that it was all part of our destiny that had been decided for us, or that God had. But we all secretly knew that it was our past, that was both the price we had to pay and our punishment, but did we really deserve to pay it?
It was 7 a.m. when Drake’s alarm had begun screaming in his ears, trying in vain to force him from his warm comfortable bed. He tried to ignore it, but it was too loud and it had been placed close to the head of his bed. It seemed to him that its main goal was to make him deaf. He opened his eyes to the sunlight shining brightly, streaming through the window.
‘What the hell,” he grumbled.
“Why does the sun have to rise so soon? Can't it come up later and let me sleep for a few more minutes?” Drake growled. His hand went to his phone as he pressed the alarm so he could sleep for another five more minutes. It was always amazing to sleep those few minutes extra, it always seemed like the best sleep, deep and rejuvenating. He thought he would wake up in five minutes, but when he finally woke up it was 7.20 am.
“Oh my god!!. I am going to be late!” Drake yelped, looking at his phone as he pulled at his hair in frustration. Just what he needed. His ‘five more minutes’ was going to get him fired. Drake jumped out of bed and put his phone on the charger. He went to the wardrobe, took out a towel, ran inside the bathroom slamming the door behind him. He was about to slip, but luckily he had been able to catch himself.
He brushed his teeth then took a quick shower, the whole time he had been scolding himself for being lazy. He had decided that he would only sleep for five minutes. If he had only gotten out of bed instead. Now he had overslept. He came out of the bathroom hurriedly, with just a towel wrapped around his waist and went to his wardrobe, he took out a random shirt and pants. Drake was never choosy when deciding on what he was going to wear, he tended to wear anything that was comfortable. Today, he had decided to wear a blue shirt and navy blue dress pants to the office, without his tie that he had tucked in his pocket.
He checked his bag to confirm that he had packed everything he needed. Luckily, he had prepared everything last night before going to bed. He grabbed his socks then glanced at his watch. He was running out of time, so he quickly put his socks and shoes on. He grabbed his office bag and ran out of his house, but he had to run back in again to get his wallet before locking the door behind him.
He walked speedily hoping that he would be able to catch the bus on time. As he was approaching the bus stop, he could see the bus ahead of him. He was happy that he had not missed it. He smiled and sighed in relief, slowing his pace, when he noticed that the bus started to move. Drake began gritting his teeth in frustration then started to run after the bus. He knew if he had not caught that bus then he would lose his job for sure because he would have to wait half an hour for the next bus to arrive. He was near the bus and was able to climb onboard. He gasped, trying to catch his breath after his unanticipated run.
He closed his eyes as he continued panting. This had to be the worst form of exercise he could think of, but that was also why he never thought of taking up a real fitness program either. He had not needed one since the race to catch the bus every morning was enough for him. Finally, his breathing had steadied, he opened his eyes to look around.
Everyone was staring at him like he was an alien. He looked at them and became nervous. He had no idea why they were staring at him. They were not staring at him because he climbed on the bus. That happened often, so there had to be another reason for it. They were all still staring at him, he kept attempting to avoid the eyes. The bus was completely full. When he looked around, there was nowhere for him to go. He was left standing and for balance, one hand was clutching a pole. His other hand went to his pocket so he could pull out his phone to check the time. He saw he was fifteen minutes late. Even though his boss was understanding, he did not know what he would face when he reached the office.
He could only imagine the manager's face, it was likely that the situation would be unpleasant. He knew that he must be waiting for his arrival. The manager was the last person in the world that he wanted to see this morning, but there was nothing he could do about it. He put his phone back in his pocket.
The bus stopped, he got off of the bus then began his walk toward work. Ten minutes later, he reached the office and looked at the building. With a sigh, he walked inside. It had been only a year that he had been working at the largest company in the country. It had not been easy for him to get a job here. He had studied hard and done very well in school, hoping to get a good job. Luckily, he had been able to obtain a job here. But despite his hard work, he had not been promoted yet and he did not know why. The men and women who had started after him had all been promoted, yet he had not.
He sadly took a deep breath then went to his seat. He looked around, everybody was staring at him, but he did not bother paying much attention to them. His colleagues soon began focusing on their work. He put his bag on the table then started to work on his laptop. He looked around, his gaze darting through the department. He was searching for a manager. He thought the man would be here waiting for him but by some lucky circumstance he was not, it was unusual.
He smiled and thanked God. His day had already improved as he had not needed to see his manager’s face. He had not said that aloud of course. It would have easily been overheard. He was surrounded by his coworkers who were truly devoted to the manager, they would not have hesitated to inform him of Drake’s opinion. Drake hated this manager, but they were all fans of him. The entire office liked him due to his apparent good and kind nature, but Drake knew who he truly was.
There were women gossiping about something nearby. Drake did not talk to anyone in the office often, he knew that they did not like him much. It had not bothered him, it didn't involve him, he usually ignored it. But today he was listening to their conversation.
“Hey, do you hear that the chairman’s son is coming to the office today? He is going to be our new president?” One of the women said to another sounding excited as she talked about him. Drake had no idea that the president was coming. Maybe they had announced it before his arrival this morning. Just then, another woman joined the group, she was as excited as they were.
“Yes! I have been eagerly waiting for him. I have heard of him, he is handsome,” she remarked.
“No, no, I think you mean her is f*****g hot,” one of the others corrected. The other two women agreed, giggling. They continued gossiping as though the man was a movie star.
“But, there is a small problem. I have heard he is very dangerous and arrogant.”
“I know what you mean,” said another, “He does not hesitate before firing someone from their job.” The others nodded along.
“Yes, but that just makes him even hotter.” After the woman commented that they all giggled like crazy. Drake heard them and wondered how they could laugh about something like that. They clearly knew that the man who was coming was dangerous. So then how could they still be attracted to him? He also didn’t understand how it was possible that this ruthlessness could make him more handsome. Sometimes he could not understand women. How could they find that man hot and handsome? All Drake wanted was to avoid an encounter with this man otherwise he was sure that he would definitely lose his job.
Drake became fully concentrated on his work. He didn’t know why he felt so overwhelmed, but he tried to focus. He knew that he would not be able to leave the office before completing all of his tasks for the day. His hand stopped working on the laptop when he felt an evil aura around him, he knew why he felt like that. He looked to his right and saw their manager was staring at him. But the man was smiling brightly at him. But even the man’s apparent good mood had not prevented Drake from becoming irritated at his presence. He gave him a friendly smile back when he turned his gaze to him. Drake was just praying to God that he would not come over to inspect his work. Luckily the manager had not, he simply turned away. Drake sighed in relief.
The girls were still talking about the new President’s handsomeness. Drake had decided that he would not listen to them any longer and continued his work. Then he felt someone's presence behind him. Someone came from behind hugging him tightly. He had not looked back because he already knew who that person was.
“Hi, Lucy.”
“Please can you at least act like you are surprised once in a while,” Lucy joked with Drake, making him smile. He knew it had been Lucy, she always did this to him and expected that he would be startled. He turned around to look at her.
“Okay, next time I will try,” he promised her with a grin. She just narrowed her eyes at him. She knew that he was lying. He would not react next time either. He always said that he would and she always tried her best to scare him. It had been a game they had played for years. They had known each other for a long time, they were college friends that now worked together, but she worked in a different department.
Although Lucy and Drake had been friends since college and she was the same age as him, she was smarter than him so she had a higher ranked position than him. But she still came to visit him daily and treated him like the best friend he was. When everyone saw that, they grew jealous of Drake because he was the friend closest to her. Drake had told her not to say anything or talk to him in the office but she hadn't cared about that.
“Oh, come on, Drake, you lying liar who lies. Can you please tell me, is there anything in this world that will actually scare you?” Lucy asked him with a laugh. After a moment, the smile on his face disappeared as he became lost in his thoughts. Lucy noticed that he was thinking about something and that whatever it was had not been very happy.
“Hey Drake, what happened? Are you okay?” Lucy asked him. He brought himself back from his thoughts as he smiled at her.
“Yes, I am totally fine, I just have too much work to do. Sorry to say, though, there is nothing in this world that can scare me. I am invulnerable,” he joked, turning away, as he got back to work. Lucy listened to him and blew out a breath.
”We’ll see, I am waiting for the day when someone will come into your life and scare you to death.” She said this in a fun way as she walked away from him, but she had not known that this sentence had left a lasting impact on Drake's mind. Hearing her, his hand had stopped working as he thought about something. He looked disturbed and shaken.
“No, that person will never come into my life. Never.” He stated with confidence to himself, but he knew that he was lying.
