Chapter 13 Battling with Jordan

783 Words
Although Richard’s proposition seemed ludicrous, he was serious about it. He never thought that he would hear Vera Albert’s name in such a situation.  Vera, who had been born into one of the most affluent families, had spent years trying to coax Richard into falling in love with her. Richard was amply familiar with her pretty face– her tiny nose, sitting right in the middle of her face, her hazel-brown eyes that reflected the sun just so on a sweltering day… he caught himself in the middle of that familiar daydream. Looking down at the photo of Vera in his hand, he was overcome with nostalgia. He saw that face nearly every day for three whole years. Even after Richard had gotten married to Mary, Vera seized every chance she could to creep back into his life one way or another. She had gone so far as to try to seduce and threaten Richard. And she had turned Richard into nothing more than an object of ridicule. Richard recalled how Vera had gone to extreme lengths to get close to him. One time, she paid tens of thousands of dollars to a student in a class that Richard was overseeing. It had caused a ruckus– everyone heard about it, and he was tortured by grisly rumors for a long time. Many people thought he had taken liberties and started an affair with a minor. Some believed he had violated a student.  In truth, it was all Vera’s doing. She was determined to ruin Richard if he didn’t fall for her the way she wanted. If he didn’t fall to the ground on his knees for her, Vera was displeased.  All of the history between him and Vera made Richard feel confused. He knew that Maria and Jordan were planning to do something bad to her. He didn’t know what, but he knew that it wouldn’t be pleasant. When Mary asked Richard how he felt about Vera, he had said that he didn't want to see Vera’s pretty face ever again. That was not a lie– it was a simple truth.  But after what he had experienced during doomsday, he realized that it wasn’t a bad thing to be greedy and desperate to be with someone he loved. Vera just didn’t know the right way to express her love. Vera had a tendency to behave naively.  Seven days later, doomsday would arrive. Jordan was a man who had no qualms about paying somebody to seduce his own wife. Who knew what cruel revenge he would exact when doomsday came around? Richard wouldn’t just stand and watch Maria and Jordan destroy a woman who had loved him as deeply, fiercely, and foolishly as she had.  Richard believed that if Vera found a companion in Milos, she would be happier. Milos’ qualms about the situation writ large were of no consequence. Richard had the resources to orchestrate the situation he wanted, and so he would use them. This was, after all, the least he could do for Vera, who had given away some of the most precious years of her life pining after Richard. “Who do you think you are? Shut up! Let me show you who I am, big boy.” Jordan was enraged by Richard’s words. He knew that Richard was serious.  All of a sudden, something crashed down from the ceiling with a resounding boom. No, it wasn’t something– it was someone. A man had lunged into the building through the window and struck Richard faster than lightning. The chandelier overhead swung wildly, shards of glass flying everywhere.  While Richard was on the floor, Jordan decided to strike. Feeling humiliated and angry because of the way things had played out, he pulled out a knife and ran towards Richard, ready to slit his throat.  As Jordan stretched his arm out to cut Richard with his knife, Richard managed to hoist himself up and block Jordan with his forearm. He kicked Jordan in the groin a couple of times before rolling over and standing up straight. Jordan was still struggling from the blows when Richard struck his nose, sending streams of blood down his front. There was so much blood everywhere. It looked like a slaughterhouse.   “You… What did you do?”  Maria, who had watched in terror as the two men lunged at each other, rushed to Richard and held his head carefully. She had been too shocked to move, but seeing the spatters of blood she was moved to action.   “Didn’t you see that he took out a knife? I was just protecting myself,” Richard replied coldly. He tried to calm down. But he couldn’t deny he lusted for blood now. After the first blow, the adrenaline had kicked in, and he turned into an unstoppable, fierce beast.
