~VORIDIAN~
I let out a resounding scream as I stared at the sky. All my life, I thought I was destined to be alone, without a mate. Even if I wanted one, I just wanted someone to stay in my shadows—bear heirs and be by my side when needed.
Love? I didn’t care about that. I had never witnessed love and didn’t know what it was like to be in love, nor did I want to be. To me, love was a weakness, and it was what had killed my parents. If only they had not shown love to a human, they would still be alive. My parents had been murdered in cold blood by the one creature that should have never existed: humans.
After suffering alone and carrying the burden of being the alpha king from a young age, I returned to exact revenge on the humans who had ruined my life. I had spent years planning the attack, and when I heard that the human king had a child, I was the happiest person alive because I would get my revenge. But upon arrival, I realized I might not get my wish.
It turned out that the daughter of my enemy was my mate.
Cruel fate? Yes, I agree with that.
How could someone I was supposed to hate be destined to be with me forever?
My Lycan, Nightfire, growled at the thought of me getting rid of our mate. “You won’t do such a thing. She is a part of us now and is supposed to be the queen you have always wanted.”
“I don’t want a human,” I responded through gritted teeth.
The word “human” sounded forbidden to me, and each time I mentioned it, my eyes shut and my face contorted in anger. “She is never going to be strong enough to carry my heirs. Look how she continuously cried after her father’s death!”
Nightfire scoffed. “I don’t care what you have in your head. I want to be with our mate, and every thought you have better disappear because there is no way I am letting that happen!”
“I am going to reject her!” I declared.
That made Nightfire growl louder and stronger. “You will do no such thing!”
“Oh!” My eyes brightened with delight. “Is that a challenge, I hear? You’re going to do what? Hate me because of this?”
“You will do no such thing!”
I let out a low laugh. “Have you forgotten how we suffered? The things we went through at the hands of humans and how they saw me as their experiment. Do you think I am happy about all of that? I am going to reject her, and I will exact the same revenge her father inflicted on my parents years ago. I am going to kill her.”
At the thought of killing my mate, I felt a sharp pain in my chest. I groaned and held my chest as it tightened. Just the thought of killing my mate caused me pain. I wondered how it would feel when I finally rejected and killed her—if I could bring myself to do that.
Mates are supposed to be a part of each other until their last days. It was what had killed my parents. They were inseparable, and since my father couldn’t deal with my mother’s death, he ran into the blade of King Eradus, the human king.
Being mated to a human I despised was the last thing I expected. Not only would I be weak once I bonded, but she would interfere with everything I did.
The human princess, my supposed mate, was beautiful, and I couldn’t stop staring at her when I saw her. How could a frail-looking human be my mate? A human princess spoiled by her father would now be my mate.
I could never accept her, no matter what. She was going to end up just like her father. I would make sure of that.
“Remember, Voridian, if you reject your mate, you may go insane.”
I chuckled. “She hasn’t acknowledged the bond yet since she is human. Yes, I’d rather go insane than have that woman as my mate. I am going to reject her.” If I could, I wondered why my thoughts were interrupting my desires.
I wanted her gone, but my thoughts wished to have her, the same as my Lycan.
“I will never forget how the humans watched as the werewolves were taken from their homes years ago and locked up by King Eradus. I will make everyone suffer the same fate and make sure they regret ever attacking the werewolves first.”
“Do you think you can do that to your mate?”
I laughed out loud. “I don’t care if she is my mate as long as I get what I want. I will make sure she suffers as she should!” I laughed and spread my arms wide, looking at the dark skies again.
“Alpha king!” Karius, my trusted friend and Beta, called me as he stood by my side, staring at the sky. “The humans have been locked up, Your Highness.”
I smiled brightly and looked at Karius, knowing he was the only person I could trust with my newfound secret. “I found my mate.”
Karius’s eyes widened in shock, his mouth parting as he waited for me to speak. “She is a human?”
“Obviously,” Karius responded because we were in the human kingdom. “Who is she?”
I sighed and ran a hand through my thick hair. “She is the human princess.”
“What?” Karius shouted, sounding like I had when I found out my mate was the spoiled human princess. “This is not what I expected to hear. Is she your mate? The daughter of your enemy is your mate?”
“Repeating it doesn’t help,” I responded. ''It seems the moon goddess is playing dirty tricks on me.''
“Are you going to accept her?” Here came the question I had been pondering, which made me question my revenge.
Was I going to accept her?
“I know she is your mate, and she is…” Karius continued speaking, but I stopped him before he could finish.
“I am not going to accept her. I will make sure that I reject her as my mate because, after all, she is supposed to be dead like her father now.”
Karius raised a brow as if finding it hard to believe me. He knew what the mate bond was about. After all, the moon goddess created a strong connection between two destined lovers.
“Don’t look at me like that!” I shouted.
“Like what?”
“Like you are judging me,” I responded, placing a hand on Karius’s shoulder and squeezing it gently. “I might have you know that nothing would ever make me fall for anyone. The word ‘love’ doesn’t exist in my life anymore. I will make the human princess suffer like I did and then reject her!”
Karius nodded. “You never know what happens.”
I sighed. “You know me, Karius. There is no way I will ever allow her to be with me. She is the daughter of my enemy, and I have been planning this revenge for years. I won’t fall for her!”
“If you say so,” Karius returned to watch the sky. “What do we do concerning the humans?”
“We take the survivors back to our kingdom, and they will all become our slaves, especially the members of the royal family.”
Karius heaved a deep sigh and rubbed his shoulder lightly. “The humans suffered huge casualties tonight, and almost half of them died.”
A frown formed on my face. I should be happy that my enemies were gone, but that would mean they never got to suffer as I and the werewolves did years ago. “Take me to where they are,” I requested.
Karius nodded in response and turned to leave, with me trailing behind him. None of us exchanged words as we walked down the hallways that used to belong to the humans but were now half-destroyed, blood splattered on the walls, and silent. We took another turn towards the arena where the human king had died, and I saw the giant cage used to imprison the humans.
Their cries resounded in my ears, and it made me smile like a maniac as it brought memories back to me of the time when I and my fellow werewolves were locked up by humans and attacked.
The same thing was happening to them but in a crueler way.
As I stepped closer to the cage, my heart started racing, my stomach screamed with excitement, and my nostrils sniffed my mate's scent.
Lavender. She smelled like a field of lavender on a sunny day, and it was so attractive that I found myself searching human faces for her. When I finally saw her, she was curled up in a corner away from everyone else. Her dark hair and expensive brown robe made her recognizable among others.
The little princess had been tamed, I thought as I approached her.
I could smell her pain and anger, which should have made me smile, knowing that the daughter of my enemy was suffering. But then I remembered that she was my mate, and my anger was all from her.
When I reached her, my heart raced faster like a wild animal, and I felt like it would burst. No one had ever made my heart race that fast, especially a human I despised.
“The human princess,” I taunted her. “Look at you in this cage with the rest of them,” I muttered. ''I have to say that you look amazing here.''
The princess raised her head to face me, staring into my eyes with obsidian eyes that seemed filled with pure hatred. “Are you happy now?” No, I was not happy after discovering she was my mate.
The princess moved closer to the cage, pointing a finger at me. “Are you happy now that you have ruined my life?” she demanded, raising her voice at me.
I was intrigued by her defiant attitude. Maybe I had mistaken her frail body for weakness and didn’t expect that she would turn out to be this fearless. “What are you going to do, princess?” I taunted her more.
“A cut to your throat, just like you did to my father!”
“I didn’t kill your father!” I responded. “He died because he was too quick,” I chuckled. “Trust me, I wanted his death to be different from that. I wanted him to scream out in pain as he died, but sadly, he died so soon.”
The princess yelled and hit the cage, reaching out to touch my clothes, but I drew back, a smirk playing on my face. “I am going to kill you, monster!” she yelled. “I will make sure you suffer the same fate as my father.”
I folded my arms, staring at my mate. I never expected her to be so loud, defiant, and stubborn. I had always pictured her as a spoiled, wealthy princess who had spent her life locked up, but the way she cursed at me and threatened to kill me made me wonder if King Eradus had trained his daughter differently.
That sly bastard, I thought as I watched her struggle to break out of the cage.
“What should we do, Alpha King?” Karius asked me.
I shook my head in response. “Leave her be,” I chuckled. “Princess,” I suddenly called. “I hope you are ready to live a life without luxury because, little girl, you are becoming my slave!”
I noticed a shift in the corner of her eyes, and she loudly screamed, hitting the cage. “You old man!” Old man? Was that an insult, too? Because I knew I was far from being an old man.
“How dare you!” she yelled. “I am never going to become your slave!”
I smiled and then turned to leave, knowing that spending more time with her would only strengthen our bond. I hated how I felt in front of her. I wanted her that much, and I had no idea what I could do if I remained there.
“I will kill you, stupid old king!”
I chuckled but didn’t turn even as she continued to throw threats about killing me. I realized I must have misjudged my little human mate; she was not weak.
