CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

1912 Words
BASTIAN "THE WEST BORDER IS UNDER ATTACK!" "They are Rogues!" "How many?" "I don't know, but there are too many, we need reinforcements!" "The alpha of the Emerald pack is on his way with his warriors, and the elite group has already been informed, just hold up a little more," I listen to the entire conversation by mind link, and my hands twist with anger and helplessness for being so far away and not being able to go to help my people, we are entering through the eastern border, just on the opposite side of the place where it is taking place the attack, and although the head of my royal guard seems to be taking care of the matter, that does not stop me from feeling anxious and ordering the driver to accelerate the vehicle to get there, although I know that it will not help, since those battles usually only last a few minutes, and I wouldn't make it even if I was in my wolf form. "I don't understand, we are supposed to be in a truce," August mutters, echoing my exact thoughts at the moment. "It may not be them," I reply. "Do you know of another group of Rogues nearby?" August asks me. “No,” I answer simply, and then add: “But that doesn't mean it is them, they may come from somewhere else on the continent. “They are Rogues, after all, just finding them in a group is already very strange, and we have only seen it with the Red Army, I would even dare to say that they are not really Rogues anymore, because they already have a leader and they are organized, they are a pack, only much wilder than us,” he tells me and I nod, as that is what has been discussed since the organized attacks began almost a year ago. "Elina wouldn't do that, she wouldn't break the truce," I tell him, and he shakes his head. "Not her, but her husband could," August responds, and I frown. "Don't call him that," I say annoyed. "Call him how?" he asks me curiously. "Don't refer to that jerk as 'her husband,'" I tell him, and he snorts. "But he is, there is no point in denying it," he tells me. "Just don't do it and that's it, it bothers me," I reply. "You better get used to it, Bastian," he tells me. "August, for the love of the moon goddess, obey my orders for once, will you?" I tell him exasperated, and he rolls his eyes. "Okay, your majesty," August responds with an exaggerated bow. "I don't understand how you can be joking right now when you don't know if your darling redhead is among that group of Rogues," I tell him, and the smile fades so quickly from his face that I immediately feel bad for saying it. Not a second later, August orders the driver to stop and opens the still-moving car door, then leaps out and transforms into his wolf form in the blink of an eye. "Hey, where are you going? I was joking!" I try to call him, but he is already running in a hurry through the eastern border forest. So, I get out of the car too and after ordering the driver to go back to the palace, I transform and run after August, although it is difficult to reach him because he is running so fast that it is quite impressive, I have never seen him run like that in my life, and that makes me feel even worse for having said something to him that worried him in such a way, because I am sure those Rogues aren't part of the Red Army, there is no way Elina would allow it, and I know that that i***t, even though he is married with her, has no power to rule over her people. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - When I arrive at the site of the attack, a few minutes after August, who is frantically searching among the dead bodies of the Rogues fallen in battle, I notice that the urgency of the request for help was not exaggerated, due to the number of lifeless bodies scattered all over the place, it is evident not only that this group of Rogues was much larger than those who have been attacking us since Elina left, but also that these, unlike the previous ones, came ready to kill as many of my warriors as possible. "Grayson, come here to give me the situation report," I say through a mind link, and notice several pairs of eyes turn to me. "Grayson?" I repeat, but again I get no response. "Grayson! Where the hell is the head of my royal guard at?" I ask out loud after transforming back to my human form, and for a couple of minutes, all I get is silence, until Portia, the only woman in my royal guard, approaches me with her head bowed. "Your Majesty, Grayson passed away during the attack," she tells me in a sad voice, and I feel my stomach clench. I notice that now all eyes are on me, even those of August who seems relieved that he has not found Camille among the lifeless bodies, everyone is waiting for me to say something, but I feel like I can't find the words, the head of my royal guard, the person who trained me for years, one of my fiercest protectors, and above all, the only remaining father figure I had in the world has just died, and now I must stand here to give the orders that he would have given in a situation like this one, I must simply swallow my tears and ignore the pain that his loss causes me. "Portia, give me the report, please," I say softly, and she nods immediately, because she understands as well as I do, what Grayson would have done if he were in my place, because for him duty was everything. “Yes, your majesty, the Rogue group was three times larger than usual, five men from the Emerald pack lost their lives in battle, as well as three from the elite group, there are ten men from the emerald pack and five from the elite group seriously wounded, and they are already being taken to the hospital, from the royal guard we only had one casualty and one injured, one of the twins, but it was not serious,” she informs me, and her voice breaks at the end. "And from the Rogues?" I ask her. "There are nineteen ..." she starts to say, but a strangled sound coming from one of the injured Rogues interrupts her, then she corrects herself: "Twenty Rogues dead, no injured because they took their own lives once they were cornered, and approximately six of them fled, all of whom are being chased by members of the elite group,” she tells me, and I frown. "Didn't you manage to capture any survivors?" I ask her. “No, Your Majesty, as I was saying, they took their lives when they were cornered, they seemed to bring some kind of poison with them, which they bit hard and died almost instantly, in fact, that is how Grayson died, he was about to capture one of them when the rogue bit him hard on the leg after consuming the poison, and they both died instantly,” she tells me, and although I have a hard time hiding the shock, I nod to indicate that she can finish her report and leave. “Take the bodies of the rogues to the hospital, have Dr. Phillip examine the poison,” I order a few warriors standing nearby and they nod, but before I could continue with the orders, a scream resonates out from the forest. "No, stop!" one of my men yells as he drags a young girl with black hair and wild eyes. The girl sees me, smiles maliciously, and before biting a bracelet on her wrist, she shouts loudly: "Long live the Rogue Queen!" And then her body falls lifeless a second later. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
