Chapter 5 RINI POV “Rini?” The spell between me and Lyall was broken by the gasped question of my only friend in this world Suzanna. “Hi Suzie,” I said weakly. “Oh my god you’re in a wheel chair! What happened? Are you ok?” “Rini had an accident this morning and needs to be off her feet this week. What classes do you have together?” I could see the effort it took Suzie not to pass out at Lyall Argo speaking to her. “Oh um… uh….” He turned to me impatiently. “Does it know words?” “SHE is top of English nationwide, stop being a dickhead.” His lips quirked slightly then he turned back to Suzie. “Figure it out, I got s**t to do.” He moved towards the parking lot but turned to look back at me, a cocky grin on his face. “Good luck running with wheels Rabbit.” “f**k you,” I snapped, surprising even myself. I never EVER spoke to any of the Elite like this. Knew deep down any of them could snuff out my human light on a whim. He chuckled, dark eyes lit with amusement and then he was turning away. But I swear to god I heard him mutter something like “we’ll see.” “Ohmygodohmygodohmygod,” I pulled myself back to the moment and looked over at Suzie who was definitely about to hyperventilate. “Suzie, calm down. You’re going to have a heart attack at 17 if you keep this up.” “Did you see that? He spoke to me. HE LOOKED ME RIGHT IN MY FACE!” I sighed deeply. The prick was too good looking for his own good. “And YOU! What is going on with you!? I arrive late to school for the first time EVER and what am I greeted with? Lyall freaking Argo carrying you to a wheelchair! Does he smell good? Can you feel his muscles? I bet you can right? They look huge!” “Suzie!” I chuckled, placing a calming hand on her wrist. “I’ll fill you in today but right now we are both so totally late for Math.” That got Susie’s attention and she paled. “s**t! Mr Abernathy is going to give us detention. We better hurry. Uh… how exactly are we meant to get to math when it’s upstairs?” I sighed and waved her forward. “How about you run ahead and sign in, I’ll take the tardy for that class. The rest of my classes today are on the ground floor.” “If you’re sure? I don’t want to leave you by yourself out here. It feels creepy today.” “I’m sure, get there quick and I’ll wait for you outside the nurses office.” “Ok, see you then,” Suzie began to race off but then quickly ran back. “I really hope you’re ok!” She took off at a sprint leaving me sitting in a wheelchair alone, staring out at the forest that surrounded the school. I must be spending way too much time with the pack because I felt a pull to the forest, an invisible string pulling me gently, beckoning me forward. * “Here you are little Rabbit!” “Why?!” I groaned aloud before I could stop myself. Luckily Rafe just laughed. “So testy today! Boss man has s**t to do so I’m on babysitting duty. He said he gave you some pain pills but you’ll need to tell me if they aren’t hitting so we can adjust the dose.” “Pain pills?” I asked. Rafe watched me intently for a moment before smirking. “Little Rabbit did you open your mouth for the big bad wolf without even questioning what he was putting in there?” Yes. Yes I had done that, but Rafe could f**k off anyway. He took my silence for the affirmation that it was and grinned at me. “Silly little Rabbit.” “I’ve asked you to stop calling me that,” I snapped. He moved so swiftly I couldn’t discern how he’d done it but his face was suddenly nose to nose with me. “And we’ve told you we will call you whatever we wish.” “You could just not call me anything and go back to pretending I dont exist,” I offered. “Remember that? When we were 13 and you all spent a full 12 months trying to gaslight me into thinking I was a ghost no one could see.” Rafe laughed in delight. “Such naughty boys weren’t we? Did it hurt your feelings little Rabbit? We see you now.” He was so close I could feel his breath on my lips. “I see you now,” he said softly, his gaze intense. I closed my eyes against the pull I felt and turned my face away. This felt too big. Too much. “Yo!” My eyes snapped open to see Ralph jogging over to us. “Wheels?” He asked, spinning my wheelchair around with ease. “You’ll look like a hamster in a wheel if you’re not careful Rabbit.” Rafe gave me look that said told you we will call you what we want. I ignored him and smacked Ralph’s hands away from the chair. “If you don’t stop that I’m getting out of this damn thing and walking home!” Instantly both of their faces were in front of my face, the sudden halting of the chair jarring me. “You’ll do no such thing,” they said as one. I sighed and rolled my eyes. “Look I didn’t get much sleep last night, I’m really sore and I really don’t want to do this with either of you right now. I appreciate you’re trying to help me but I can handle myself. You can go about your business and I will go about mine.” “You’re our business.” They said again. Infuriating, stubborn males! I was about to tell them so when AGAIN Rafe was in my business. “How sore are you? The meds should have kicked in by now.” “I’ll text L,” Ralph muttered. “No!” I exclaimed. Good lord I needed some SPACE from them. “Please,” I said evenly. “Please just get me inside, I feel cold.” I wasn’t cold, weirdly I hadn’t been feeling the chill as much lately but I would say anything to avoid being sucked into Lyall’s orbit again. In unison they smacked their palms to their head and then I was being covered in two jackets and wheeled to the entrance.
