Chapter 2

1386 Words
I haven’t even opened the door fully when mum wraps me in a tight hug. Dad laughs “you need to visit more often Poppy, one of these days she’ll break you in half”. Mum steps back and playfully punches him. “ You missed her too you fool”. Dad steps forward and gives me a hug too “maybe a little”. I greet all my siblings, giving them a quick hug and doing some quick catch up. We have a group chat where we keep up with each other, mostly sending gifs and memes, but also small bits about our lives. Mum makes a delicious dinner, as always, and she makes me promise to go shopping with her in the morning, like I need convincing to shop, although maybe to get out of bed early I do. Exhausted from a long week of school and study I go to bed early. Since it is a long weekend, I have plenty of time to spend with my family. I wake to Sabrina jumping on top of me. She may be my best friend, but f**k she is annoying sometimes. “That’s not how you wake someone up, Sabrina,” I grumble. She stops and grins “worked didn’t it?”. I roll over, and she falls to the floor. Teach her. Sabrina is very beautiful but also very clumsy, not usually a trait found in wolves, she is a rarity indeed. “Serves you right”, I declare as she whines from the floor, “come on Poppy, all the good dresses will be gone by the time we get there”. I turn my head, “good maybe then I won’t have to go”. “Poppy please, for me?” I can see her puppy dog eyes even with my eyes closed. I groan “ Okay, now get out so I can get dressed”. She leaps off the floor. “ Oh thank you, be quick otherwise I’ll come back and drag you out” she winks. I groan. Once she has left, I drag myself to my wardrobe and grab some clothes, have a quick shower to wake myself up and brush my teeth. I have chosen a simple pair of high-waisted, ripped black jeans, a burgundy long-sleeved skin-tight top and my high top black converses. I tie my long brown hair into a messy bun, apply some light make-up and grab my phone before heading out. They are all out eating breakfast already. Among my family, I am the only one who isn’t an early riser. “Good morning sleepy head” Hugh hums louder than necessary. “Good morning Poppy, how’d you sleep?” Laura adds. They both sound pleasant, but their volume says sibling annoyance to a tee. “Can’t you guys play fair? Pick on a girl once both her eyes have opened?” I groan. “Where’s the fun in that?” Hugh grins. I roll my eyes, sitting down and enjoying some of mum's fantastic pancakes instead. This is one thing I definitely miss; mum's cooking. Always amazing. Always on time. And always left overs. Once we have finished, we head to the mall, just us girls. Mum and Laura sit in the front whilst me and Sabrina sit in the back. Once we get there it doesn’t take long for Mum, Sabrina and Laura to all find their dresses. They find them in practically the first shop we go to. But mine have always been harder to find. I don’t enjoy wearing such bright colours or low cuts. I prefer darker colours to show off my tan skin and tight-fitting rather than revealing. We make our way across the mall, heading towards my trusty store, Fenlays. I swear, I nearly buy everything in that store every time I visit, but mum doesn’t mind. She enjoys spoiling all of us, and dad doesn’t mind either. He's worked hard to get to where he is now and wants us all to enjoy his hard work. On our way, we stop to get our nails done. They have all matched their colours to their dresses, but I don’t need to. I only ever have shaded colours, today is white. Once we reach Fenlays, I quickly find what I am looking for. It's a burgundy dress, tightly fitted with long lace arms and flares out at my hips. It stops mid thigh, which I know dad won’t be overjoyed about, but I love my legs and enjoy highlighting them. I am a well-built wolf, in human and wolf form. My muscles aren’t bulging but they are visible, from my biceps to my abs to my calves, you can see from looking at me I'm no low-ranking wolf. If that isn’t enough, my family’s green eyes identify us. We are the only ones in our pack, everyone else has either brown or blue. If people see my eyes, they instantly know I am the Beta’s daughter. As I predicted, I go a little crazy in Fenlays but they all look too good on me to say no to. When we got home, I lug my bags back to my room, removing the tags and putting them away. I lay my dress and new black heels out on the chair ready for tonight before using my free time to fit in some more studying. Before I know it, mum pops her head in “sweetie it’s nearly five, time to get ready, we need to be down there by six”. I nod “thanks mum” I motion back to my books “lost track of time”. She smiles “I knew you would”. I quickly get dressed and work my hair into soft curls, pinning some of them back to shape my face. I then put on my full make-up, including lashes, even if I do hate them, it is a fancy event after all. I add some simple gold studs to complete my look. I look in the mirror one final time, flattening out any creases in my dress before smiling and whispering a quiet 'done' to myself. As we make our way down the stairs, I smell a beautiful forest scent crossed with fresh mint. Oh f**k. I inhale deeply to check. Double fu*k. I sigh to myself, my mate is here, please don’t let him find me. We are greeted by Alpha Frank and his Luna, Danielle. They both look stunning, as always. They are true mates too, and being an Alpha he's possessiveness of her is near unbearable to watch. He will not let any other male touch her, mates or not. The only exception being their three sons. They have Judah, Jacob and Jeremiah. Of the three, I only really know Jacob since we went to school together and are still close friends. We often met up at events like this, sneering at the formalities of it all together. He is definitely the jokester of his family, the others all seem so serious, like they have forgotten how to have fun. Since Jacob isn’t in line for Alpha, he has trained to be the best warrior in the pack and is well on his way to becoming our top trainer too. Alpha Frank nods to greet me, but Luna Danielle pulls me into a hug. She is more like an aunt to me, having known me since I was a child. She and mum often spend time together while their husbands are off completing pack duties. “It’s been too long” she gushes, “you’ve grown into such a beautiful young lady, how are your studies going?”. We make small talk as I tell her of my plans to study werewolf medicine and work in the pack hospital one day. She frowns, “always independent”, then she smiles, softly rubbing her thumb on my cheek “you really are beautiful”. “Thank you Luna” I bow, she slaps my shoulder playfully “and still a jokester too, I see. Oh well, go on then Jacob's in there. Let the chaos begin”. I smile and nod before going to find Jacob.
