I place a couple of bills on Gerald’s hand. “Here. For food, in case I need to stay with Luis for a few days,” I say. “For your school projects, I have bought everything you need. There is also medicine for Ma, in case she gets sick again.”
I am about to leave when Gerald’s hand tightens around my arm. “It’s Sunday, and it’s already dark and we just arrived. Also, tomorrow you have work. Shouldn’t you rest for today?” he asks.
I smile at my brother and ruffle his soft hair. We are on the island for a few weeks. In actuality, the plan is to come back last Friday so we will have more time to move our things into our new apartment. But the earning is better there, especially during weekends when the tourists are flocking in the area, that we stayed longer than expected.
