Nurse Smith and Tre were standing next to his bed, staring at him. Nurse Smith said, “You spend a lot of time in the bathroom.” “Yes.” Topher forced a chuckle. “You feed us so well.” He patted his belly, which had actually shrunk since his arrival, no matter how much they made him eat. He tried to justify the weight loss. He was still recovering from a terrible trauma. His body was adjusting to the new routine. But the fact of the matter was that something was off, and it wasn’t because of his shoulder. He felt like he was wasting away, like there was already less of him, and not just in body but in mind.
