Chapter 9

2135 Words
Elena's POV Today has so far been the usual and I was in the nursery, checking on my little patients when I got called to the ER for an emergency. I am currently on my way to the ER and I'm really confused as to why I am being called because for now, I am only handling with obstetrics and neonates. When I got to the ER, I saw Lisa running towards me. She told me that there is an accident case. The woman is seriously injured and also 8 months pregnant. So we'll have to perform an emergency C-section. (Uh-oh, its serious) The case has been given to Lisa and she only trusts me to assist her in this (Lisa is a perfectionist and she is really strict when it comes to her work. Therefore she is only comfortable with me. To be precise, only I can deal with her in our hospital apart from Emma. Hence we both are usually assigned the cases together as no one dares to go against Lisa and believe me she is pretty much an important person here as she is the best at what she does) I got to the patient's bed and saw a really beautiful woman in her late twenties lying there with a bandaged head and a big bump. I felt so sad seeing her condition and I can't help but feel that I've seen her before. But I can't quite figure out where (Stop testing your memory and do your job fast. We need to save both the mother and the baby, I scolded myself) The intern informed me that the patient's name is Mrs.Anastasia Williams. She has a serious head injury and internal bleeding but has not lost her consciousness and is fully oriented (Its a really good sign that she is conscious) It was a car accident and her husband died on the spot. They need to perform a craniotomy and stop the internal bleeding immediately, which means we'll have to take the baby out ASAP. For now they have managed to treat the external injuries. The patient is looking so scared and is panicking which is not at all good. I'll have to calm her down first. I went near her and took her hand. I gave her a reassuring smile and said, 'Hello Anastasia. I'm Elena, I'm the nurse assigned to you and I'll be taking care of you along with Dr. Lisa. Please calm down and tell me if you feel any pain in the abdomen' (She looked up at me and her eyes got widened. She stared at me for a few minutes. She seems to be shocked and happy at the same time. Does she know me by any chance???) No Elena, I don't have any pain, but I can't feel my baby's movements. Please tell me if she is okay (Oh....so its a girl) Also can you please let my mother inside. I want to tell her something, she said seeming to be happy. 'Its a good thing that you feel no pain. Let me check the baby's heart beat. Also, don't worry I'll send for your mother'. I asked the intern to call her mother and I immediately started checking her abdomen. There are no visible injuries. I checked the baby's heart beat and thankfully it is there but its really low. We need to act fast or else we may lose the baby. 'Anastasia, your baby is okay for now but we have to take her out fast. So, the only option is an emergency C-section. Please don't worry we'll save her', I said reassuring her. She got really happy hearing this. She thanked me and asked me to call her Ana. (As I have said before I feel like I know her from somewhere. You know that feeling when a person feels so familiar even if you don't remember seeing them ever before, that's what I'm feeling right now) Then suddenly a woman in her fifties came running towards us. She introduced herself as Camilla, Anastasia's mother and I informed her about everything we have planned for Ana so far. She told me that they haven't informed her yet, about her husband's death and I suggested not to tell her before the surgery. The patient is already stressed out and we don't want to worsen it. The intern informed me that Lisa is getting ready for the surgery and is already in the OT. So, I went near Anastasia along with her mother and said, 'Ana, now I will be transferring you to the operation theater and we'll be preparing you for the surgery. So if you want to say something to your mother, you can now'. She nodded her head and I started walking away to give them their privacy but before I could move away she held my hand and said, Elena, I don't know if you remember me but, you saved my life 7 months back. You also saved my baby that day because I was on the verge of an abortion. If you hadn't come for our help, we both would've died there that day. Mom, this is the angel whom I had been searching for these past months. The first thing I remembered when I woke up after that accident was your face. I tried a lot to find you, but no one knew anything about you other than that you were a nurse. I believe its fate that brought you to me and Iva today, oh its my baby's name (she said smiling) So I am trusting you with my baby. I know that you will save her today. Please take care of her in my place. I know that I won't survive this. Though everyone is telling me that Kevin is okay, I can feel it in my heart that he's not. So, I am giving my baby to you. Please give her all your love, saying this she hugged me and started crying. That I'm shocked would be an understatement. I still remember that day. I was on my way to the hospital for my night shift. I couldn't find a cab and was walking along the pavement when I heard a loud crash behind me. I turned around, only to see that a car had crashed onto the median. I rushed towards the car and saw that there was an injured, unconscious woman on the driving seat and that the fuel was leaking. So, I immediately pulled her out and dragged her away from the car. As soon as we got away, the car exploded. She was barely breathing and was bleeding from everywhere. There was no one on the road other than us. So, I called 911 and started giving her CPR. Thankfully the medics arrived on time and transferred her to the hospital. But I wasn't aware that she was pregnant at that time and I never thought that I'll meet her again. Like Ana had said, I think I'm fated to save them both. I believe in fate and the prospect of having an ultimate purpose in life for which God has sent us to the earth. I think I just found mine. I looked towards Camilla. She was crying and at the same time giving me a grateful smile. To all of you, it may sound stupid, but I agreed to Ana's request (Thats me guys. Emma is right. I'm so naive. I can't stand anyone's pain and suffering, even if they are complete strangers. Oh god I'm literally crying right now) I replied smiling, 'You are right Ana, I think its fate that has brought me to you. I promise you that I'll take care of Iva and I will love her with all my heart. So, be calm and have faith, we'll save you both'. Ana then asked me to bend down to her level and when I did so she hugged me and kissed me on my forehead saying, 'Thank you my angel. I'll always be there with you'. I've always wanted a big sister and today I got one. She then turned towards her mother and said, 'Mom, today you may lose your one daughter but I am giving you another one. Love her like me, for I know that God has sent this angel to us for our Iva. Take care of dad, Ad and Aves for me. Tell them that I love them all. Love you mom. Lets go Elena'. Camilla broke down into tears hugging Ana. The intern asked her to calm down and took her out of there. We immediately shifted Ana to the OT. Lisa was already there ready with everything. I scrubbed up and arranged all the articles. Since Ana had expressed her wish to see her baby, we only gave her a spinal anesthesia for the time being. We started the procedure and Ana asked me to hold her hand. I did so and I think it gave her a little strength as she was smiling softly throughout (God please save Ana and her baby) After a few minutes, Lisa took out the baby girl. The baby was blue due to the lack of oxygen and was not crying. So, she handed over the baby to me and started suturing back the incision (No God please no, I won't let her die. Please help me to save her) I immediately rushed with the baby to the warmer, and started the resuscitation procedure. I don't know why but I was crying throughout. I suctioned the liquor out of the baby's mouth and finally after about 5 minutes of struggle, the baby cried and her colour changed to normal pink. I can't express how happy I was at that moment. I cleaned her up and weighed her. She was so small, just 3.3 pounds. I covered her up in a clean white cloth and took her to Ana. She was so happy that she started sobbing as soon as she saw her baby. She kissed the baby's forehead and said, My baby is so beautiful, isn't she!!!!!! Name her Iva Rose Williams for me. Elena, thank you so much for saving her and for agreeing to take care of her. I'm so happy and content that I can now die in peace. I'll always be there with you both. I stood there crying, holding Iva in one hand and holding Ana's hand in another. 'Don't say that Ana. You are going to be okay and we'll both take care of her together', I said trying to console her. She just smiled at me without saying anything. But that smile said it all....... Lisa completed the procedure soon and we were asked to move out of the OT by Dr. Harry and his team. She kissed both Iva and me for one last time and waved at us smiling. I took Iva to the NICU. I couldn't hold it anymore and I cried my heart out. Lisa was trying her best to comfort me (She is the only one who understands my emotions always) I feel like I'm going to lose my sister. I started praying, but after 2 hours we were informed that she died during the surgery due to cardiac arrest. I completely broke down hearing this. Emma and Becca got to know about everything by then. I think Lisa informed them both about the tings that happened today. Emma started lecturing me about how dumb I was to agree to something like that on impulse and Becca started scolding me on how she had always warned me not to get too attached to my patients (Both of you are not helping at all......) But Josh and Lisa came to my rescue. Both of them helped me to calm down and to think straight. Lisa adviced me to have a talk with Camilla. She's right, I think I should do that, after all they are her family. Also they haven't seen Iva yet. So I took Iva in my arms and I went out to meet her family. Iva is so small and delicate (You are right Ana, she's so beautiful) I studied her innocent face and caressed her small hands. She immediately clutched onto my finger and at that moment, I fell in love with that little angel. I decided then and there that I'll protect her at any cost, even if I have to give up my life. I will never leave you, my baby and this is my promise to you........
