It took me a lot of courage not to give in to temptation, when he offered me his hand, but I had to. It will raise suspicion. We don’t even know each other and out of the blue we are holding hands like a couple in love?
Too much attention. Too many risks.
Also, Joanna knows how much I hate this day, as I have told her many times before, and if she thinks I am enjoying it in the slightest, it will backfire, and I do not want her telling me that she was right all along.
I arrive at the entrance of the tent, when Peter shows up behind me and takes my hand in his.
“What are you doing?” I ask as I try to pull my hand away from his, but his hold is too strong for me.
“I am not letting you get inside without me at your side. What will people think?” He says and leads me inside.
Since when do I let a man boss me around?
Well, since now, I guess.
I do not want to argue right here in front of other people. These things should be done in private. In the bedroom. Naked.
I shake my head at these nasty thoughts I am having all of a sudden and keep my head straight as we walk in and are encountered by hundreds of people, whose heads turn around to get a glimpse of the future Mrs. Kain.
Valerie Kain.
That sounds alluring.
He brings me to my table, where he helps me with my seat once again and leaves once the auctioneer’s voice beams through the room.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the ceremony is almost upon us. Now, since many of you were looking for a bride, our Alpha came up with an idea that may satisfy some of your needs. Mister Dasir, if you’d please have the ladies walk out on stage for us.”
What the hell is going on?
At least thirty women head inside the tent, all dressed in white with a veil over their faces.
“What is this?” I ask Joanna, but she just shrugs, which means she doesn’t know either.
I look around, and my eyes find Joey, who is not showing the least bit of interest.
“Gentlemen, I invite you to come to the floor and greet these young ladies. If you like one of the ladies, you simply take her hand and walk toward the ceremonial room. You heard me correctly. Everyone who is able to find a wife, may get married here tonight with the blessing of our Goddess.”
“Why did we not know about this?” Olivia asks but gets no answer, since none of us knew this was going to happen.
Every young man stands up and walks up to the young ladies, all of whom are on display like mannequins for the men to observe.
In no time, at least three young men have paired with a woman and walk toward the ceremonial room.
The fathers and uncles and every other supervisor here tonight, seem to be very pleased with this deal.
My father is on stage, talking to the auctioneer and a couple of other elderly.
My father is about to be filthy rich if he’s asking for money for each and every woman willing to get married.
Roughly an hour later, every woman is paired with a man and every other gentleman who didn’t get to find a wife seems to be perfectly fine with it.
“This was fun to watch,” Joanna complains and yawns.
“Amused, are you?” I smile and she shakes her head disapprovingly.
“The High Priestess is here. It’s time,” Joey lets me know.
I stand up, my feet hurting from wearing heels, and grab Joey’s arm.
“My feet are killing me,” I whisper in his ear and he pats my hand.
“Soon it will be over.”
“Are you still mad about before?” I ask him, waiting for his reaction.
“With you? No. With Billy? Yes. It was stupid and reckless what he did. I can already see the bruises forming on your arms. I could kill him, for what he did to you,” he breathes heavily, and I know he is very mad.
“I should have kept my mouth shut.”
“No. You went along with the tradition, for which I am very proud of you. You put everything else above yourself. Such a selfless act which your brother could not acknowledge. He is the one who should have kept his mouth shut. And as if it weren’t already messed up, Peter heard us talking about his father. Peter comes from a very powerful family, no matter his father. The influence he has on society is impressive. Father is a smart man, doing business with him.”
“I am a 'business' now?”
“He didn’t only offer money, Valerie. He offered father much more than that.”
“So, what? Father only offers a daughter and Peter gives him the world? Why offer so much for one person?”
“Because you come from a very old, strong bloodline of werewolves. We are a true Alpha bloodline. One of the most powerful packs known to our kind.”
“What do you mean true Alpha bloodline?”
“If you’d have listened once when I told the stories of the old, you’d know.”
“Come on, tell me,” I beg and he sighs.
“True Alpha, means you are an Alpha without taking another Alpha’s powers. Our bloodline is special, because every man in the family was born an Alpha. That is why every one of us has their own pack and does not belong in one pack. I can’t be father’s Beta. I am an Alpha.”
“But I am a woman. What does that have to do with me?”
“You will carry his children, and if they are male, they will be Alphas.”
“There is no guarantee that our children will be Alphas.”
“Yes, there is. Look at your nephews. Every one of them is an Alpha. A true Alpha.”
Is that why Peter offered so much money? Is his only purpose to have a true bloodline of Alphas so he can take over the world?
This just got more interesting.
Soon we are in the ceremonial room, which is just as big as the tent, and we all find our seats.
Everyone seems to be sitting in pairs.
Peter walks toward us and offers me his hand.
“If I may steal my future bride,” he asks Joey for permission.
Gentlemanly. So not him when in private.
“Of course. May the Goddess bless you!”
“Love you,” I mouth at him and he smiles.
Peter and I walk toward the altar where the High Priestess is waiting, holding the Holy Goddess’s Guide of Unity.
“Goddess blessed,” she greets, as we all fall silent.
“We are honored to witness the Goddess’s blessing upon these two people tonight. The Goddess blessed Peter Kain and the Goddess blessed Valerie Jameson. May you find prosperity, love and guidance in unity. May your love burn bright forever,” she says, and sprinkles us with holy water.
“The bands please,” she demands, and Joanna hands her the wedding bands.
She dips them into the holy water and hands them to us.
Peter takes the smaller one and puts it on my finger and I do the same with his.
“By the Goddess’s blessing, you may kiss the bride.”
Now, this was nothing like I imagined my wedding day was going to be like. Plain, quick and no wedding dress.
Peter places one hand on my waist and one on my hair and with a swift move, he bends me over and gives me my first ever kiss in front of everyone.
His lips are very warm and full. It makes me want to bite his lower lip so much, but I try to contain myself.
Him on the other hand, not so much.
He pushes his tongue in my mouth and I melt underneath him. His grasp on my waist becomes stronger as he probably noticed that I am so weak at his touch and almost fell over.
I open my eyes mid kiss and look at his beautiful features as he is kissing me with his eyes closed.
He finally straightens and after a few seconds I remember how to breathe again.
“To Valerie and Peter!” My father calls out and everyone joins in.
