Chapter 3 The sunlight filtering through the pink curtains in Pip’s bedroom window gave the walls a bubblegum hue. Sitting on the floor, Rain watched his son’s serious face. Pip was carefully sewing a large red button onto a tiny black vest. He was getting better and better at this. Soon Rain would teach him how to sow seams and repair zippers. Rain stood his latest creation up—that three-foot marionette fashioned out of black cloth and purple silk. Its face was oval, the cloth pulled smoothly back, and Rain had yet to decide on its facial features. But he knew this one would have big blue eyes and no mouth. Its hands would be large and open and his character would be influenced by those big hands. He’d gesticulate a lot and probably turn out to be different from all the other marionette
