BY TUESDAY AFTERNOON, the team had succeeded in whittling the potential suspects on the one-hundred-strong party guest list down to ten, including the security guards. Although they had, as yet, been able to find nothing connecting either guard with the dead man, neither of them could be totally exonerated. They had had the opportunity to slip inside Seward’s suite and murder him, which meant they couldn’t yet be discounted from the investigation.
Still, such a reduction in the suspect list was a remarkable achievement, given that the murder had been discovered after midnight on Friday, the weekend had intervened and Rafferty’s mind, body and spirit had been otherwise engaged for chunks of it.
