Chapter XII Villa Valente, where the prize awaited me, is located in the hinterland of the metropolis, beyond Suffern, a few miles from the relative exit on the New York-New Jersey Highway. We had gone to pick up Mark first, as he had asked us that morning as we were leaving. "Have they already let your waiter go?" I had asked him at some point along the way, not long before leaving the highway. Up until that moment, Norma had made me recite a little speech that I would make that I had written in Turin, but hadn’t studied it; and that morning, after we had been to visit Mark, I had learned it by heart. "Of course not! Donald is scrupulous. It will be days before they let William go free, but in the meantime our friend will do everything he can to find evidence and have him indicted."
