Laine opened hi s eyes abruptly and lay still. Did he imagine the sound that made him wake up? He found himself alone on the king-sized bed and grimaced. Where was Jenny? Did she really mean it when she said she was going to sleep in the children’s room?
He was drunk last night and probably forgot to apologize to her. It was frosty, and he could hear the sound of the strong wind that moved outside. He needed her right now. He needed some cuddling and love making.
Wait!
What was that?
Did he just imagine a huge silhouette zip pass?
He yanked at the bed switch and switched on the lights. He saw nothing. Was he still drunk? No. He did not feel so drunk to have imagined that.
He slid off the bed, put on a pair fluffy flip-flop and walked out of the bedroom. He opened the door to the children’s room and switched on the lights.
His six year old son and four year old daughter were all sleeping peacefully. On another bed was Nana, their baby sitter sleeping and snoring.
What!
Was this how she snored?
Where was Jenny? Was she in the guest room?
A sudden urge flowed through him like he was injected with the strongest aphrodisiac in the world. He wanted to see her beautiful face, hold her and whisper how much he missed her and felt sorry. He would then kiss her and take her back to the bedroom for a sensual love making.
He went into the living-room and saw her sitting on the sofa.
Her ebony black silky hair sprawled freely and some strands fell over her face. Her eyes were closed as if in a state of meditation.
“Your Majesty, “he began softly, “I come before you with all modesty, genuity and loyalty. I implore with gusto for forgiveness. Do not banish me from your palace which I swore to serve with a mind-set that is selfless…”
He stopped before her and touched her face. He frowned. She was cold and something chilly crawled up his spine.
“Jenny! Jenny!” He touched her again and she fell on her side. That was when he saw the lines on her neck which showed that she was strangled to death.
He felt his mouth go bitter, and his brain went tumultuous. He was befuddled, trying to figure out what was going on.
The silhouette he had seen zip pass. It was not an imagination. It was for real.
That meant there was a killer in the house. The children! His gun was in the drawer. Oh no! Jenny was dead. Was he having a nightmare?
“Hello Laine.” A thick voice emerged and all of his courage drained at that point. “I am sorry about your wife. Please accept my condolences.”
Laine turned to see a man standing two inches above seven feet. He was African-American with swarthy skin. His flattop was dyed brown with an earring on his left ear. The eyes were protuberant, bulgy and red. His nose was bulbous, with large round nostrils over dark thick lips. His square jaw was aggressive, making his face a bogey façade.
His neck was thick with a body that rippled with muscles. His chest was broad and stout, with a small waist giving him a V-shape. Laine saw one of the biggest biceps he had ever seen in his entire life.
Who was this giant?
“Why did you kill her?”
“I did not kill her” He said innocently. “Forgive my manners. I am Boe. Boe Joe. You are Laine Page. We know that.”
“Who killed her?”
“Doe killed her.” Boe said and pointed a finger. “It was not me.”
Laine turned to see another man standing behind him. The man who was called Doe was a replica of Boe except for the color of his hair which was dyed red. They wore the same king of clothes. Both men wore black trench coats.
“I told him not kill her.” Boe said. “But he does not respect me. I am sorry. But having a new woman these days is not a hard thing. So many women around.”
“You killed my wife!” Laine snarled. “You killed my wife and not just another woman. That was the mother of my kids.”
“We don’t have all day, Boe.” Doe said in a similar voice.
“Yeah, you are right. We want the code.’
“What code?” Laine asked.
“You are Agent L-MP30 and you handled the 778-Transaction.”
Laine wondered how they discovered his identity. That was a top secret.
“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Laine said.
“Really?” Boe said and began to move towards him slowly. “Doe killed your wife to show how serious we are. You have got two kids in the house. You love them don’t you?”
“Leave my kids out of this!”
“Whatever happens to your children is your call. Give us the code and we leave in peace.” Boe said.
“E-9 Delta BH-666 Meg 2666.” Laine said.
“We know the code.”
“You asked of the code.”
“I meant the solution to the code.’
“I do not have it.”
“Don’t lie to us!” Boe snarled and his voice sounded like thunder rumble.
“I swear I don’t have.”
“Doe, get the kids!”
“Please don’t hurt them.”
Doe moved with alacrity towards the children’s room. He kicked the door open and stood still. The kids and baby sitter were missing.
He went and opened the cloth closet but saw no one. He checked the toilet; there was no one. He moved back.
“They are missing.” He said.
Boe turned at Laine.
“Do not fuc* with us!” He warned with dangerous note in his voice. “I will cut you bit by bit unit you give us what we want.’
“I swear to God, I don’t have the solution. It is a top secret and I only supervised it.”
Doe made a dashing move, grabbed Laine by the neck and raised him up with a single hand and slammed him on the floor.
Laine had only made a single move and stopped moving.
“What the hell did you do?” Boe asked with a wry face. “You killed him.’
“I did not mean to kill him.” Doe said.
“You fuc*ing killed our lead. What the hell are we going to tell Mama? What the hell will she tell Dolbycato? You ruined our hustles.”
“It was a mistake.’
“It was not. You got to watch your goddamn temper, Doe.”
“He was lying and I hate lies.”
“I don’t care what you like or hate. You just fuc*ed everything up.”
“He is not the only lead. We will find another.’
“How? How do we find that, you as*hole?”
“You don’t talk to me like that Boe!”
“That is how you deserve to be talked to.”
They paused as they heard sounds of cars.
“What the hell is that?” Boe asked and moved to the window. He peeked and saw police cars. There were armed police men surrounding the house.
“Fuc*! The fuc*ing baby sitter alerted the police.” He said. “And we got no hostage. I guess you are happy now, huh?”
“This is not the time to argue. We got to leave this place now.” Doe said. He got out a machine gun and lit a cigarette. “The police just added zest to the night.”
Boe brought out his gun too.
“This is the NYPD. “ A police officer said through a loud speaker. “You are surrounded by armed policemen. Come out with your hands in the air!”
“Damn you!” Doe moved towards the door. “It is time to send some coppers to their graves.”
“I knew it!” Boe said as he peeped. “It was the baby sitter.”
They saw her talking to a police officer. They also saw the kids being taken into a police car.
Doe exhaled a thick cloud of smoke.
“We don’t have time for this. We have to leave.” He said.
“I better call Zash.”
“Let me keep them busy.” Doe said, put on a mask and opened the door.
The policemen were alert.
“Drop your weapon” Said the sergeant with the loud speaker.
“Really?” Doe said and chuckled. “Okay…” He lay his finger on the trigger and opened fire.
“Fire!” The police man ordered and a fierce exchange of bullets started.
Doe was joined by Boe, who also wore a mask, and the duo sprayed bullets that sent some cops down.
The sound of the gun shots filed the air; sputters illuminated the night and gun smoke diffusing.
“What the hell is going on?” Sergeant Simon wondered as he noticed that the bullets did not affect the men. He called for backups.
A chopper appeared from the sky and it looked so strange. It was transparent and looked like ice. There was a pilot under the wheel. His helmet made his face hidden and he seemed not to care about the policemen. The chopper landed in front of the building.
Boe and Doe got inside the chopper. The policemen kept firing shots at the chopper but it seemed to be bullet proved just like the men.
Boe looked down at them and laughed.
What were these men and what did they want?
