Chapter 4: Life After Incarceration

1713 Words
❤ Mateos's POV ❤ I have been working in the garden for hours now, and I’m quite exhausted, so decided to take a break. I wiped the sweat off my forehead with my arm. I should really bring a towel next time when I come to work. I took a seat on the bench and drank some water. I was so thirsty that I ended up drinking the whole bottle of water. I should get it refilled before I resume working after my break. It has been three months since I started working in the Villaverde mansion as an gardener/over-all helper. Most of the time, I am assigned to work in the garden trimming the leaves, watering the plants, and making sure it’s clean. It’s a pretty big garden, and eight hours is sometimes not enough to do everything I need to do here. Another house helper, Mang Dado, helps me from time to time. However, he is almost 60 years old and mildly arthritic, so I do most of the work anyway. I appreciate him keeping me company, though. It has been six months since I got out of city jail. I was inside for almost two years. I got caught up in illegal drug charges. The charges were eventually dropped because there was no sufficient evidence against me. The truth is, I was dealing drugs the day I was arrested. I was smart enough to get rid of the evidence before I got arrested, so all the authorities had were suspicions. I was kept in jail for that long because the authorities were hoping that I would snitch on who was running the operation. They never got any information from me, and they didn’t have sufficient evidence to charge me, so I was eventually let go. Two years is not that long, but for a 20-year-old, it felt like a lifetime. This is especially true because I barely had any visitors in jail. I had a girlfriend, Andrea, who visited me once to break up with me. I came to see her when I got released, but she was already shacking up with an older man and didn’t want to get back together with me. I wasn’t very heartbroken when she left me, but I didn’t have much family, so I was trying to reconnect with as many people from my past as I could. I had friends whom I was tight with, who ran out on me when I got arrested. They were the ones who got me in dealing. They visited me in jail to warn me against ratting them out. I didn’t plan on ratting them out, and hoped that they would at least get help me get out of jail. Since they didn’t do that, I didn’t bother reconnecting with them anymore. I learned my lesson, and I was determined to just stay away from their types. I was living in the city with my aunt before I went to jail, and when I got out, they weren't at their old house anymore. I couldn't find them anymore, and I couldn't really live in the streets, so I decided to go to my mother’s hometown, where one of his brothers still lives. My parents died in a car accident with my older brother when I was fifteen. Since I was still a minor, I had to live with a relative. My father's sister was the only relative in the city who could take me in. I wasn’t really close to my aunt, and she's not a very nice person, but I didn't have a choice. I tried to be a nice guest when I moved in with them, but she made me do almost all the house chores and even had me take care of my younger cousins. She has seven kids, and three of them were more than 8 years younger than me. My aunt used to tell me how I was such a pain in her b*tt and that I was a burden to her. I decided to just stay out of the house for most of the time and tried to get a job. I couldn't really find anything permanent, so I got in with the wrong crowd. The time I was arrested was the first time for me to deal. The authorities weren't really keen on pressing charges against me, and they wanted to make a deal. I would be let go if I told them who was in charge of the operation. I kept denying any involvement in the operation or knowing who was in charge. I wasn't stupid to rat out my crew. Because of this, I spent two years in the slammer. My aunt, her husband, and none of my cousins even came to see me when I was in jail. That is why I wasn't surprised that I couldn't find them anymore when I got out. I decided to move away from the city to start over. I couldn’t think of anywhere else to go, so I decided to hitchhike my way to my mom's hometown. I had no money, so hitchhiking was my only option. It took me more than two days to get there, and when I arrived, I found my mother's distant cousin, Uncle Lenny. He was surprised to see me, but he was nice enough to take me in. He fed me and gave me a change of clothes, and for that, I am very grateful to him. He is almost 60 years old and does not have a wife or children, which works well for me. Uncle Lenny works as a driver in the Villaverde mansion, and he got me a job there too. I didn’t know anything about gardening, but there weren’t any other openings at the mansion. I didn’t have any money and didn’t have any other skill or previous experience, so I took the job. I wasn't earning much, but it was better than nothing. In the three months I've been working in the mansion, I've never met the boss. It appears that they are always traveling and don't really spend a lot of time in their mansion. They also have a daughter who is studying in the city. Apparently, she doesn’t come home very often. I can’t help but feel envious of the Villaverde family, who has a mansion that they don’t even live in. It feels like a waste of spending on maintaining an empty house. Well, it wasn’t my money, but I couldn’t help but think of how the money the Villaverde’s are wasting on their mansion could help a lot of poor people like me. I was about to go back to work when I saw a car come into the driveway. I had not seen a lot of cars drive into the mansion, and I couldn't help but be curious as to who the car belonged to. I am also curious as to who the passenger is. I walked closer to the car and was surprised to see a beautiful woman come out of the passenger seat. I wonder who she is. Could she be the Villaverde’s daughter? I couldn’t stop staring at the beautiful woman, and couldn’t deny how attractive she was. She has long wavy hair, and very fair, smooth skin. She also looks quite tall, probably about 5’8”. I am a six-footer myself, and I am proud of that. She’s wearing a short sleeveless sundress, and her long legs are very shapely. I was looking at the woman’s ample bosom when Mang Dado interrupted my thoughts when he called me "Mateo!" I turned to look at him and said "What’s up?” Mang Dado: “Let's go back to work." As I started working again, I couldn’t help but say "I saw a car come into the driveway. Do you know who that is?" Mang Dado walked close to the driveway to look, and when he saw the car, he said "That's Miss Katrina's car." Mateo: "Who's Miss Katrina?" Mang Dado: "She's the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Villaverde." Mateo: "I thought she never came home." Mang Dado: "She doesn’t come home very often. Besides, she’s supposed to be in school right now. Anyway, it's none of our business why she’s here. Don't talk to her." Mateo: "Why would I talk to her?" Mang Dado: "There's no reason for you to talk to her, so stay away from her." Mateo: "Fine." I don't have any plans to speak to Miss Katrina anyway. She looks like a spoiled rich brat, and we wouldn't have anything to talk about anyway. She is quite beautiful though, and I doubt if she'd pay me any attention anyway. I resumed working, but for some reason, I couldn't stop thinking about Miss Katrina. She really is beautiful, and I can't help but want to look at her again. Maybe I can just sneak a peek at her from afar. I continued working in the garden until lunch. After eating, I laid down on one of the benches. I plan to take a nap for a few minutes before resuming work. It was a hot day and I was really tired. When I woke up, I was surprised to see Miss Katrina walking in the garden. I was a little hidden from view so she couldn't see me. She was now wearing a pink top and jean shorts. She's wearing flip-flops. Her long legs are beautiful, and her skin is very fair and smooth. I couldn't help but imagine what she looked like naked. I was so preoccupied that I didn't notice Miss Katrina walking closer to where I was lying down. When she did, she screamed quite loudly, and I was startled that I fell from the bench. Mateo: "Ouch!" Katrina: "What's wrong with you? Are you a p*****t?" Mateo: "No! You startled me!" Katrina: "Who are you? Why are you watching me?" Mateo: "I work here. I was on my lunch break and I was sleeping. I wasn't watching you. I was here first." Miss Katrina looked pissed. She stomped and walked out of the garden. I let out a frustrated sigh. I might be in trouble. I hope I don't lose my job over this.
