chapter 1
Kathrine Stone watched as they lowered her mother's casket into the ground. The shock had still not left her yet. Next to her sat her best friend Amy May and on the other side stood her mother's long-time friend Gina. Amy May and her family owned a farm on the outskirts of town. She was kind and had known Katharine since they were in elementary school. Gina had known Katharine's mother, Stacy since they were in high school.
Kathrine had light brown with large blonde strips on the front. She would often dye them different colors. Her hair was parted on the side. Her natural waves made her hair look nice. She had bright emerald green eyes. They stood out and Kathrine really wished they didn't. It attracted to much attention for her taste. She would often her comments about how pretty she was but to bad she only wore dark colors. Her mom always told just to be herself.
When the service had ended Kathrine stood with Gina and Amy. Gina walked up to Katharine placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Kathrine sweetheart, if you need anything day or night just call me. I will be out of town for the next couple of weeks but if you need me I will come right home, " Gina says.
Gina was an interesting woman. Flirtatious and outgoing. She worked for ttavel angency here in town. She had a body many women would die for. Her blonde hair and blues attracted a lit of attention. She constantly had dates with men. Her newest boy toy was taking her on a vacation.
"Thank you. I should be okay. Amy says she is going to stay with me for a week or so. Her parents told her that it was okay, " Katherine says hugging Gina.
They say their goodbyes and Amy and Katherine get into her truck as Gina drives off.
"A-are you okay, Rin, " Amy asks.
Amy was such a timid girl. She had short hair. A little linger than chin length. Her hair was a light brown with almost a red hue to it. Her hazel eyes always showed kindness to others.
"I will be okay. I have cried so much over the last couple of days not sure if I can cry anymore, " she says softly.
"Well, I am here for you. I am sure it must be hard, " Amy says trying to find some way to comfort her friend.
They stop in front of Kathrine's home. Katherine gets out and waves to her friend.
"I will be back in just a bit. Just need to go grab my things, " She waves at her friend.
Amy drives off and Katharine walks inside. This house seemed so empty. She sighs locking the door behind her. She walks to the kitchen and pulls out the bag of candy setting it on the counter. Halloween was her favorite holiday now she was just sad. She would have more than enough money for the house. Her mom made sure to leave a trust in her name. Since she was 18 years old she would be able to use the money.
Sighing she walks into her mother's room. She grabs a picture her mother had sitting on her nightstand and sits on the bed looking at the picture. Not realizing tears are running down her face until some droplets hit the frame. She wipes them away quickly. A shiver runs down her spine. Looking around she sees some curtains blowing in the breeze. She sets the picture down and walks to the window. Her mother never left windows open. She only opened them once in awhile only during the day. She would have told Katharine if she had left the window open.
She shuts the window with a sigh. Picking up the picture she sets it back and heads to shower. After her shower she enters her room seeing a note on her bed.
"Meet with me to know more about your family and their "accidental" deaths. The mansion on the top of the hill. Tomorrow. Just knock." She wasn't sure who got into her house and put the note there or what sort of prank this was but she didn't find it funny. She planned on confronting whoever wrote this stupid note
She looks around entering her living room to see her sliding glass door slightly ajar. She walks to the door quickly and quietly but before she can close the door she sees a skull ring laying on the porch. Scanning the area and not seeing anyone she quickly opens the door more and grabs the ring before shutting and locking the door.
She sets the ring with the note in her room. She hears a knock on the front door. She opens it to see Amy standing there with her bags. Taking a bag they enter her room. They proceed to get ready for the night.
"Rin we don't have to pass out candy this year you know," Amy says worried about her friend.
Amy pulls her black leotard on and puts on a pair of ears. Kathrine had finished slipping on the cheerleaders uniform. It was her mother's from high school. Kathrine liked the idea. She dressed in all black all the time. Being the only one in town who wore dark colors, She figured it would confuse people.
After they had passed out candy for about an hour Jason came sauntering up with Mathew. Both boy were popular around school and they were the soccer stars of the school.
Jason was blond with bright blue eyes. If he wasn't such a jerk he would be attractive to Rin. She rembers them being friends at one point. In kindergarten, until he pushed her in the mud so she turned around and bit him.
Mathew was an alright guy. He had brown hair and brown eyes. Kathrine picked up a while ago he had a crush on Amy. Amy definitely had a crush on him. She just wanted to see how long it would take on of them to confess.
"Wow, you actually look normal for once. Normal suites you," The blond speaks as he walks up with a small blonde haired girl dressed as a fairy princess or so Kathrine assumed that's what she was. Ignoring the blond male she spoke to the little girl.
"Hello Samantha, let me guess what you are," Kathrine says. Samantha nods quickly smiling at the older girl.
"Don't ignore me, Rin. I gave you a compliment," Jason says looking at the girl.
"Are you a Fairy princess," Kathrine asks the young girl still ignoring the male behind her.
"Yes! You are the only person who knew," the little girl yells happily.
"You make a very good Fairy princess," she days handing the little girl candy.
"Hey Amy," Mathew says waving to Amy. Kathrine could see a small blush paint her friends cheeks. Amy gave a small wave to him. "Jason is having a party at his house tonight. His parents and sister are heading out of town later tonight. Maybe you and Rin could come. It starts around 9pm tonight," he says scratching the back of his head.
Amy looks to Rin who only shrugs her shoulders as if to say she didn't care. Kathrine sees Mathew smile. Jason only groans. He asks his friend why he invited the two outcasts of the school as they walk away. Samantha wildly waving to Kathrine as they leave.
Once trick or treaters stopped coming they took the rest of the candy inside and headed to Jason's house. Jason lived in a fancy house not far from Kathrine's.
"So, you are okay going to this party," Amy smiles at Rin.
Truth be told Kathrine really didn't want to go. She would much rather stay home. However, she also knew how much her best friend liked Mathew.
"Yeah. It's a chance for you to hang out with Mathew. I will just hide in a corner or something. I don't mind," Rin says.
"If you aren't comfortable with it then we won't go," Amy says.
"No, I want to go. Let's just go get ready," Rin replies.
