Chapter 4 The sigil was broken. I couldn’t believe it. I’d never had a problem with it before—Lena had worked the spell herself and it was set to respond to my magic—but no matter what I did, the reports wouldn’t send. I squinted at it with bleary eyes, looking for something that marred the etching. But it looked as perfect as always. For a long moment, I stared stupidly at it, not knowing what to do. The clock on the credenza chimed the hour, and I started at the sound. It was only five o’clock, and usually I worked much later. But I was exhausted and, technically, I could call it quits for the day. Deciding I would do just that, I slowly and methodically packed away my things.
