COREY POV
Just as I reached the bunkhouse and shifted, Tate’s voice appeared again. “So your girl was asking about you. I had to think fast so I told her you were in the shower.”
“OK thanks man, I’ll do that and then head up to see her.” I jump in the shower and release my healing, all wounds are healed instantly.
While I’m washing myself off, I think about my mate, about her smell and how she touched me and I’m suddenly rock hard. I realise I’m going to have to take matters into my own hands, quite literally, to get some stress relief before going to see her.
I think the last thing she needs tonight is a horny werewolf. After a few minutes of quick strokes, I washed the evidence down the drain and can think straight again.
I dried myself off and chucked some tracksuit pants and a t-shirt on and made my way to the house. I knock softly at the front door, Maz answers and tells me Raylee is in the lounge before disappearing.
I walked toward Raylee and instantly I smelled her tears. She looks up at me and before I can even say a word, she dissolves into tears again. I sit next to her and wrap my arms around her, she leans against my chest and sobs.
“Tate told me what happened. Is Jada OK? Are you OK?” She sniffles and wipes her face.
“Yeah, Jada and I are both fine physically, I’m just having a harder time emotionally. I’m sorry for getting your shirt wet.”
“Hey, no need to apologise, that would have been a pretty traumatic experience, watching a Puma stalk your child and not being able to do anything about it.” I said while rubbing her back. She sighs contentedly and I sense she is a lot calmer now.
“I just thank God that the wolf turned up in time. You know I was just about to draw its attention to myself, I just couldn’t bear the thought of Jada getting hurt and I’d happily risk my own life for hers.” I frowned down at her. Of course, she would want to protect her child, but I was having a difficult time thinking about the possibility of losing my mate.
“Well, I too am glad the wolf intervened.” We sat in silence for a bit before she finally moved to get up.
“Well, I’m pretty tired. I will see you in the morning. Goodnight, Cor.” I stood and quickly kissed her cheek.
“Goodnight, Ray, hope you get a decent night’s sleep.” She blushes and walks off up the hallway. Just as I reach the door, Maz walks back into the room, and I decide now is a good time to ask her about my plan.
“Hey Maz, you got a minute? I just wanted to run something past you.”
“Hmmm what’s that?” she asks, giving me her full attention.
“Well, I noticed you had a big old greenhouse down the back, still in good shape but not being used, and I was wondering how you’d feel about a pool?” She looked at me confused, trying to work out the correlation between the greenhouse and a pool.
“OK, you're gonna have to give me more than that. Cor, I’m confused” I chuckled.
“Sorry, OK, so I was thinking if you had no plans to use the greenhouse it would make an excellent pool house and I’m asking if you would be willing to let me make you a pool.” Her eyes widened as the penny dropped.
“Listen Cor, I don’t have that kind of money…”
“No No” I said, cutting her off. “I plan on making it myself and I’ll happily pay for everything. I’ll do it at night so it doesn’t interfere with work, and I have a few guys I can call in to help me and all at no cost to you.” Now she’s looking at me suspiciously.
“OK, I give, what’s in this for you? Why do you want to do this?” I looked down sheepishly.
“uh, well, I kinda got the idea after Raylee and I had a chat the other day. She mentioned how she found it hard to exercise as she is used to working out in a pool.”
She laughed. “Man you got it bad don’t ya…you know what sure, knock yourself out.” I looked up from the ground to see her expression. I needed to be sure I heard her correctly.
“Really…Oh, thank you Maz, oh could you not tell Ray?” She laughs again and pats me on the back,
“Sure Cor, whatever you want.”
“Awesome thanks heaps Maz, Goodnight.”
She walks off shaking her head, but yells back “see you in the morning, lover boy.”
I find it difficult to get to sleep that night, my mind is constant, thinking about my encounters with my mate and then being given permission to make a pool for her to use while she’s here.
I start making mental lists of materials I’ll need, people I can ask to help, and debating whether I should allow Ray to spend more time with Conri, and most importantly, when I should tell her I’m a werewolf.
After several hours, I eventually drifted off to sleep, thinking about my wonderful mate.
RAYLEE POV
I woke early the next morning feeling a whole lot better than I had the previous night. I can’t help but wonder if Alpha will come back. I made a mental plan to duck out after I put Jada to bed to see if he was around. I know it’s highly unlikely and that he is probably off with his pack, but I can hope.
I quietly head out to make myself a coffee, which I’ve recently become quite addicted to, and sit in the lounge enjoying the peace and quiet.
I grabbed my phone and shot off a quick message to my mum just updating her on how things were going. She was a little apprehensive about me and Jada making this trip on our own but didn’t try to stop me. She just asked if I would check in every few days.
It’s not long and everyone else begins to come out. I get breakfast started while the kids sit around watching cartoons and Maz appears a few minutes later fresh out of the shower.
“Good morning, how are you feeling today?” she asks me while pouring herself some coffee.
“Morning Maz, yeah I’m feeling a heap better today, it’s amazing what a good night's sleep can do for you.” she smiled and nodded before helping me make breakfast for everyone.
The guys arrive just as we are finishing preparing. They both wished us a good morning and sat down at the dining table. I’ve noticed we have finally fallen into a comfortable routine. Breakfast goes smoothly with a little small talk and before long, the guys leave to start work and Maz and I are cleaning up the dishes.
“Hey, so what have you got planned for today?” I asked Maz while putting the clean dishes away.
“I was thinking about doing some work with one of my adopted horses, if you wanted to come help or watch?”
“I think I might get my bake on. Just feel like keeping busy this morning, so I’ll bake a few things and then have lunch if you want? Jada would be happy just playing on her iPad and I thought maybe Kaydee might want to help me with some baking? I can also keep an eye on Johnny, so you’ll have the morning stress free.”
Maz chuckled. “OK girl, first off you seriously need to slow down your talking, that all came out like verbal diarrhoea and secondly, that would be great. Thanks, I’ve needed to do some work on this horse for a while.”
So Kaydee and I baked our hearts out and ended up with chocolate cupcakes, Caramel Cheesecake, Apple & Apricot pies, and Carrot cake.
After I clean up our mess, I get started on preparing lunch. I decided, since the weather is pretty warm, we could have salad wraps, so I got everything cut up and prepared so all that needs to be done is put it together when the workers arrive.
Once I was all done with that, I realised I still had about half an hour before lunch, so I grabbed myself yet another coffee and headed out to the porch to relax.
My mind starts to whirl, and I can’t help but start thinking about Cor and my confusing feelings towards him. I try to push them away by thinking about Alpha, but inevitably, I always come back to Cor.
What was it about this guy? I mean, yes, he is gorgeous, but it's more than that. I feel drawn to him in a way I never have before and it’s like even the smallest touch calms my soul. Let’s not forget that twice now he has kissed me on the cheek. I smile and sip my coffee.
It’s not long, however, until my insecurities creep in and I’m questioning everything. I don’t get it. What on earth does he see in me? I’m overweight, short, and so plain. Was he just playing some sick game with me? I don’t deserve to be treated like that if that’s the case.
The more my brain whirls, the more frustrated I get because I can’t work out what his game is. He seems genuine, but I don’t get it, as I’m sure a guy like that has girls throwing themselves at him…Ugh, I need more coffee, or maybe I need less coffee. I don’t know what I need or want.
I’m pulled from my internal battle by voices heading my way. I looked up to see Maz, Tate and Corey looking in my direction. I frowned, got up and headed to the kitchen without saying a word.
Maz comes into the kitchen. “Um, is everything OK? You look like someone shot your dog.”
“Huh, oh I’m fine. I just got a lot going on in my head and I think I’ve had too much coffee. I thought we’d have DIY wraps for lunch. I’ve cut everything up and everyone can just put in what they want.” I said, starting to get out the ingredients from the fridge.
“OK well, a nice change of subject, but I’ll drop it for now.” she walks out with plates full of ingredients.
