COREY POV
I’ve just been going through the motions since Raylee broke my heart. I’ve not heard a word from Conri and I just feel so weak and broken. Having Alpha blood and being this extra strong werewolf doesn’t help a lick when you get your heart broken by your mate.
I can’t even bring myself to look presentable as I make my way to the house for dinner. I struggle to eat and eventually leave without having said so much as a word the entire time. As I enter the bunkhouse with Tate, he grabs my shoulder.
“What’s going on man, you look like a shell of who you normally are, what happened between you and your mate?” I figured I didn’t have much more to lose, so I filled him in on everything that happened.
“You warned me, Tate, and I didn’t listen, all because I was so desperate to know what was going on with my mate, now she doesn’t want anything to do with me. I guess I have no choice now but to come clean.” I said, with my head in my hands.
“Do you think that maybe you should give her a day or so to calm down before you lay this on her?” he asks with genuine concern.
“Probably.” I mumbled “But I’m dying here, I’m going to tell her tonight. I’ll wait until the kids are in bed and see if she will talk to me.
I waited until nine before I made my way back up towards the house. I can hear Maz and Ray on the back porch laughing happily. I smile a little at the sound of my mate being happy, then I wonder if she will ever be happy with me.
I got to the porch where they were sitting. I asked Ray if I could talk to her alone and she shut me down. She also shut Maz down when she attempted to remove herself. She says she knows I’m hiding something, and she doesn’t want to talk to me unless I tell her what it is.
So I told her we would do it her way and step off the porch to shift. I turn around so they don’t have to see my crown jewels and strip off my clothing. Ray starts ranting at me, but I have tuned her out and begun the shift. When I’m fully a wolf, I turn to face them, Ray spits her drink and stands up a little wobbly. Clearly, she’s had a few wines.
“You’ve got to be effing kidding me, you're Alpha? But how, what…” She spits, I can see the rage on her face, and she pulls at her hair. I figure it's best if I shift back now so I can talk to her.
As soon as I’m dressed, I ask her if I can explain and she just explodes.
“Explain what, how you lied to me, how you let me believe I had someone or rather something I could confide in ABOUT YOU when I was feeling all messed up. I bet you were laughing your ass off at how pathetic I was, talking to a wolf about my feelings and the whole time it was you…Yes, you saved my daughter’s life and for that, I’ll always be grateful, but for everything else…I HATE YOU! I never ever ever want to speak to you or ever see you again.”
My heart breaks more as she screamed at me. I heard Conri whimpering in the darkest corner of my mind, so I told her she was my mate and that I was sorry I messed it all up. I have tears streaming down my face and so does she.
She looked down at me with a hard face before almost whispering “I don’t want to see you again, get away from me.” She took off the house.
I fell to my knees, unable to stand from the heartache and just sobbed. I heard footfalls coming closer to the railing and Maz whispers “You are a werewolf, aren’t you?”
Unable to speak, I just nodded “And Tate? He is one too?” her voice was so calm as if this didn’t even shock her. I nodded again, “Huh, well there you go. Look, Ray is upset and with every right to be, give her a few days and maybe she will be more willing to hear you out. Come for breakfast and I’ll see what she wants to do. Goodnight, Cor.”
I looked up at her and managed to mumble goodnight. I sat there a while longer, feeling too weak to stand. I could hear Ray sobbing. One of the benefits, or in this case, downfalls, of being a werewolf, is highly enhanced hearing.
I struggled to my feet and forced myself to walk to the bunkhouse. Thankfully, Tate isn’t there, having already snuck off to see his mate. I flopped down on my bed, feeling exhausted and numb, but knowing sleep would not come easily as Ray's words played on repeat in my head. “I HATE YOU!” “I don’t want to see you again.”
Tears silently ran down my face. Sometime in the early hours of the morning, I must have drifted off into a restless sleep.
RAYLEE POV
I woke around four with a splitting headache, a combination of too much alcohol and sobbing for hours. My eyes hurt, my nose is stuffy, and I really don’t want to have to deal with anything.
I find some Panadol in my toiletry bag and head to the kitchen for water. Thankfully, all is quiet. I took the pills and then headed out to the porch with a blanket from the back of the couch.
I wrapped myself in a blanket and sat waiting for the sunrise. I felt numb and it was not from the cool morning air. It’s not long before my mind is swirling. Corey is a werewolf. How is that even possible? Werewolves are mythical creatures you read about in books.
He says I’m his mate, but that is also impossible. Maybe the guy is on drugs? Ugh, I’m so damn angry and I’m also so damn hurt. What am I going to do? How am I going to be able to see him every day for the next few weeks and still enjoy my time here? Around and around the thoughts swirled, I couldn’t even enjoy the amazing sunrise.
“Wanna talk about it?” I was startled from my thoughts by Maz’s appearance. I looked at her and she offered me a mug. “Here you look like you could use some coffee.” She sat next to me as I took the coffee.
“Thanks.” I said weakly as I took a sip. She sits quietly sipping her coffee and just watching me.
“It might help you get out of your head.” I nodded slightly.
“I feel like I’ve ruined the whole trip, I’m supposed to be here enjoying being free of my ex-husband and I land myself in a whole lot worse mess. My heart physically hurts Maz and I’m not even sure why…oh and let’s not forget he’s a freaking werewolf. I mean they only exist in fairy tales, don’t they?"
Maz sits quietly while I rant and finally says “So what do you want to do?”
“Well for today, I’m going to avoid him like the plague, then I’m gonna work out if I stay or just give up and go home to Australia.” I looked at Maz with fresh tears in my eyes, she looked sad as she put her coffee down and stood.
She comes over, crouches down and wraps me in a hug. “OK, if that’s what you really think is best, but at least take today to think about it. I’ll bring you breakfast in your room, so you don’t have to see Cor. I’ll go get it started and give you a minute.” I sat for a few minutes sipping my coffee before retreating into my room.
MAZ POV
I watched a very broken Raylee wander back into her room. I realised that it might be time for me to intervene. I’ve tried to stay out of whatever is going on between them but now Ray is talking about leaving.
The girl has just come out of a crap marriage and, despite the way Cor handled things, I can see how deeply he cares for Ray and I’m sure he will treat her a hell of a lot better than her ex did. So I decide I need to do something.
I heard a knock at the door and shouted “come in!” knowing it'd be Tate and Corey, but I was surprised when I found only Tate in the dining room. “Good morning, Tate…so werewolf huh, I should be giving you guys harder jobs.” I said to him.
At first, he looks shocked, then sheepishly rubs the back of his neck. “Ah so he told you about me too, huh, yeah sorry about that, but we kind of have a rule about not telling humans about us. How’s Ray?”
I studied him for a second. “She’s not real good, and now she’s talking about leaving early. I know Corey went about this all wrong, but I can tell he really cares about her…How is he coping?” I ask with genuine concern.
“Yeah, he’s not great, said he wasn’t hungry and just sat staring off into space, he’s broken.” I just nodded. We ate in silence for a while as I tried to formulate a plan.
I decided the best course of action is to lock them in a room together and hope they sort it out.
“Hey Tate, you wanna help me try to sort this whole mess out?” I asked him.
“Uh sure what did you have in mind?” he says sceptically.
“Well, worst-case scenario, Raylee does what she says and leaves. Best case scenario, they sort this out and we enjoy the rest of Ray's time here. So, I plan to lock them in my office in the barn.
It has a strong lock on the outside. Can you tell Cor, I need to see him in about an hour and I’ll get Ray there” I grinned evilly and he burst out laughing.
“Sure why not, as you said, can’t get any worse.” With breakfast over, I knocked on Ray's door, she hesitantly opened it and she was still in her Pajamas. She looked a total mess with her hair unbrushed and red eyes.
“OK, you are gonna have a shower and get dressed. Then we are gonna do something. If you’re only staying a few more days or whatever, then we should at least spend it doing something fun.” I told her. She thinks it over and nods.
“OK, give me thirty minutes to shower. What should I wear for our fun?” I smiled at her.
“Whatever is comfy.” I replied and headed back into the lounge to get the kids ready. Once I have them locked in the room, I’ll take the kids on a walk so they have no choice but to stay there for a while. I really hope this works.
