That's not who I am!

Chapter 2

LIAM'S POV

It was a four and half hour drive yet I did it in just under three hours. My parents were an hour behind me. I've no doubt we got a speeding ticket somewhere each and I couldn't care any less. Chase and the lads are on route. Layla and Luke are now on the private plane back. Yet we are waiting to hear how Jane is. The last update we got was half an hour ago when we were informed that Jane was out of surgery and in recovery. We had to wait for the doctor and I was losing my patience really fast.

"I don't give a s**t Jack, your police force have f****d up. If Jane wants to sue you then you better be scared. I don't care if we are friends I'll be her lawyer because she is like the daughter I never had and no one messes with my babies do you understand" My mum says pointing at Jack.

"I know, and I pray she doesn't. Trust me I will be dealing with matters and right now Jane has armed police standing guard over her and that will remain. But give me time to figure out what else is going on as well. It's been a few hours and I've travelled down just like you have. They know they f****d up the second I told them I was taking over personally" Jack says.

"Bit late for them to realise that. Janes fighting for her life" I say and my mum places her hand on my arm as she says "Liam let me handle this" Then she looks back at Jack and she says "Go do what you have to do but you better not keep anything from me. Also you better make sure that girls house is still standing to".

"I'm on it Cara, trust me I'm just as angry. Things should of been handled a lot more better. Jane doesn't deserve the backlash she has received and more should of been done after she was physically attacked last week"

"Excuse me" I say seeing red.

"I forgot to tell you, son. Turns out this is the second physical attack Jane has encountered. But right now what matters is we don't get ourselves arrested so we can be here for Jane" My dad says as the doctor comes in. And although I want to say more my attention goes straight to the doctor as she says "Cara Wilson. I'm Dr vanguard, Sorry I haven't come by sooner but I wanted to stay personally with Jane in recovery for a bit. Jane has just been moved to her own private room" Dr vanguard a middle aged women with glasses says. My mum shakes her hand as she says "How is Jane?"

"It was touch and go a few times we nearly lost her.. She was stabbed a few times and that led to internal bleeding. We have managed to stop the bleeding. The surgery was a success. The head injury though we won't know the extent of it until Jane wakes up that's if she wakes up.. For now, she has been placed into an induced coma due to swelling on the brain. We will wait for the swelling to go down and then see if she wakes up. Until then we won't know if there is any brain damage. For now, Jane is in intensive care and all we can do is wait for her body to recover. Jane also suffered a broken arm so that's been placed in a cast. You should prepare yourself that Jane is covered in bruises everywhere as well" Dr vanguard says.

"When can we see Jane?" My dad asks.

"I'll take you all to her now. But please don't get in the way of the medical staff" Dr Vanguard says.

"Don't worry, we won't get in the way. We only want what's best for Jane. And trust us we're on your side in achieving that" My mum says. "I can tell. I was informed how fast things were changing after you had been Informed. I'm glad Jane has you in her corner. I've been friends with Mick her boss for years and he has been asking often how Jane is he called me in personally after the attack and I didn't hesitate to come in, thankfully I live close by. Mick has asked me to let you know he will stop by with his wife when he get a moment" Dr Vanguard says.

"Yes, he said he was on shift and it's a busy one. He said he stayed as long as he could. I remember him and his wife at my other son's wedding. I'm glad Jane had at least one friend here to help her. I just wish she told us what was going on" My mum says as we turn into an area you either need a badge or to be buzzed into.

"Dr Vanguard I was about to page you. Jane Henson is coding" A nurse shouts down as she was running towards the nurse station up ahead. "Stay here," Dr Vanguard says as she starts running off..

"f**k" I say going to hit a wall but my dad grabs my hand and says "Not here" and I know he is right. lashing out in the hospital will just get me into bother. Not that I'd leave even if they tried to make me.

"Let me see you to the family room," A nurse says walking up to us. "Thanks," My mum says barely holding it together as I see her crying. I wrap my arm around my mum's shoulder as we follow the nurse. "She needs to fight to stay with us. She just has to" My dad says. "Jane will, she is a strong woman" My mum says but that confidence she usually carries isn't there.

When we reach the family room the nurse asks if we need anything.. My dad says we are fine but I barely hold onto their conversation as I pace the room. All I need is to know Jane is okay.. I need to know the only woman I've ever fallen for is okay.

The next forty minutes drag by slowly as I pace clock watching. Praying.

My mum stopped crying but is now sat looking out the window as if she is in deep thought. She looks like she has aged a decade in the time we have arrived. My dad is sitting holding her hand as he looks at the floor with a rage-filled face. I know he wants the people responsible infront of his right now because I do as well. I want to show them what it's like to really suffer.

My phone rings and I see it's Layla, I'm so glad they were just across the pond and the flight wasn't long. But I hate having to take this call right now.

I answer the phone and Layla says straight away "How's Jane?" "She came through the operation and we were told she was in an induced coma but stable.. We were OK on our way to see her when she suddenly coded. We still waiting to hear what's going on" I say and Layla bursts into tears on the phone as she says "No".

"I'm sorry Layla, I wish it was better news right now but we're all in the dark" I say running my hand through my hair.

Layla and Jane have been best friends since they were toddlers. They went through school and training to be midwives together. They only separated when Layla moved up to Manchester even then she only agreed to move in with me and Luke on the grounds Jane had her own room. Every two weekends they swapped who was visiting who and Facetimed daily at least once. They were more like sisters and I hated having to break this news to Layla, she grew on me like the sister I always wanted just like Jane was like Luke's sister he always wanted.

"She will make it through, I know she has to.. We are on our way. We will be there in an hour tops" Luke says sounding choked up.

"Okay, the second I know anything I'll let you know," I say.

"No, I want to stay on the phone... Put me on speaker even if it's just silence I want to hear what the doctor says the second there's any news. What else did they say before Jane coded?" Layla says.

"I'll put you on speaker. Mum, Dad it's Layla and Luke" I say placing my phone on speaker and putting it on the table.

"Layla, how are you holding up?" My mum asks. "I'm not.. my bestie is fighting for her life. She left me a voicemail the day we left asking if I could ring her the second we turned our phones on. A few others reached out saying what happened... I feel awful I was living my best life whilst insisting on no phones while my best friend needed me. What if the last time I saw her was the morning after my wedding I'll never forgive myself" Layla says.

"It's not your fault, I feel awful Jane didn't feel she could come to any of us" My mum says. "Oh, Cara don't do that. Jane loves you like a second mum I know she does... She just would have been scared of losing you. I know she would have been wanting to reach out to you... I also know she doesn't trust easily and you all are the closest she has allowed people to her since her parents died. Don't doubt she doesn't love you all because I know she does. Especially you Cara that's why you ended up being a next of kin" Layla says.

"I swear if I'd known sooner I'd of looked after Jane... I even see the news about a school girl's murder but I just didn't link it" My mum says. "I didn't either," My dad says trying to assure my mum. "I don't recall seeing anything about it... I wish I had" I say as Dr Vanguard comes back in.

"Sorry it's taken so long.. Jane is stable for now. Like I said the next few days are going to be long. And I'll keep fighting to save Jane. Would you like to see Jane now" Dr Vanguard says and the woman looks tired.

"Please," My mum says as she starts to cry again and Layla says "Thank God. We will be there soon. Give Jane a kiss for me"

"We will," I say picking up my phone and then following my parents out with the doctor.

Once we reach Jane even though I thought I'd prepared myself to see her in such a state. I wasn't prepared at all. It was like someone put my heart in a vice-gripped device and was squeezing it. I just wanted to wrap Jane in my arms and keep her safe. But I couldn't, she needed all this medical equipment to help her right now.

My mum rushed to Jane's side and kissed Jane's cheek gently as she took her hand and said "That's from Layla, she is coming and we're all here. You need to fight to stay with us, honey".

I slowly make my way over whilst my dad goes and stands next to my mum I go stand the other side. "I need my poker buddy back. Who else is going to win me and make me do whacky dances or drink wild made-up drinks?" My dad says "I'll help you win every round" My mum says.

"I'll settle just friends too, but you have to show us them beautiful eyes again and let us hear that lovely voice of yours. Don't you go leaving us yet. You still have a whole life ahead of you" I say.

"Although I'd much rather you become my daughter for real. So no more coding, rest as much as you need to but you stay with us and let us show you that your life isn't over with yet. You thought so hard alone already but you have us all now do you hear" My mum says. "I'll go to battle till the end of time for you" my dad adds on.
