After their father and Tarsha moved out of sight, the two brothers stood there in awkward silence. Neither made any effort to speak for many moments, until Walter could not bear the suspense any longer.
“Is she really having your child,” he asked his brother, unable to believe that his irresponsible younger brother was about to be the father of the next generation of their people.
“Could you not hear the heartbeat?” Cole asked defensively.
“Yes, but that does not mean it is yours,” Walter pointed out. Though he and his brother had a falling out, he did not want him to be taken advantage of by an opportunistic young woman. If he was fooled in to thinking that the child was his and revealed their secrets to her, it would be disastrous for their people.
