2. Sky High

After a frantic month of Jed and I both packing and getting ready to move, it’s finally the day. We leave today and arrive in Sweden tomorrow. Then the following day, I’ll start classes. Jed and I are packing the last stuff in the truck my dad borrowed from a co-worker. He will drive us to the Windsor airport, and then I won’t see him for almost a year. The four of us got in the car, and my mom put on our driving mix. We’ve listened to it on every road trip since I could remember. We only got through a few songs before we made it to Windsor and started putting our bags on the private jet. “This thing is swanky!” My dad told Jed as we unpacked the car and packed up the plane. It was a small one, only sat about 4 people, but had a little mini-fridge and bathroom. It’s definitely nicer than anything I’ve been on before. Once the vehicle was unloaded, Jed and I stood in front of my mom and dad, who were both crying. “We knew we’d have to say goodbye to you both at some point, but we didn’t think it would be at the same time.” My mom blubbered through the sentence as she hugged and held us tight. My dad did his best not to wipe away his tears, but we could still see them fall. Before I knew it, we were taking off. I had only been on a plane once before, but I loved being in the air. I couldn’t wait to reach altitude and start looking out the window. We were high in the sky, above the clouds, when Jed startled me, tapping me on the shoulder. “It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” He said as we stared back out the window. I nodded, “It leaves me almost breathless.” “Me too,” He trailed off and sat back down. “Are you excited about your new job?” I almost felt stupid for asking; of course, he is. “Yeah, but I’m nervous too. What if I’m not good enough?” “Jed, stop. You are a great detective; Detroit prepared you for this.” We smiled at each other, and he let out a big yawn. “I’m thinking the same thing,” I said to him, positioning my pillow. We’re going to be on this thing all night and day due to refueling. ~ “We’re here,” Jed gently said, waking me up. I stretched and started getting my things together. There was a big black SUV for us at the airport, courtesy of Jed’s new job. We packed the car up, leaving my stuff easily accessible because he’s dropping me off before going to his new place. We got into the car, and he pulled up directions on the car’s GPS. Neither of us had a cell phone to use; we couldn’t afford that. “You know the number to the station in case you ever need me, right?” Jed asked as we drove towards Summerville. “Yup, 1-1-2.” I laughed at him. “Don’t call the emergency line,” He laughed back at me, and I waved him off, “I know. I have the number written down, plus I already memorized your extension.” “Good, once they give me a cell phone, I’ll give you that number too, just in case.” “Thanks, Jed.” We drove for a few more hours as he reminded me of the self-defense tips he taught me and how to stay safe alone. I love him, but sometimes he’s too much. “Don’t worry so much, Jed. I’m ready for this part of my life.” “I know, and I know you won’t let anyone mess with you. I just want you to know I’m here if you ever need me.” I squeezed his hand, and we finally pulled up to Summerville. He drove me to the dorms, and I pointed out which building is mine. The building was tall and wide, housing almost all of the students at this school. I looked at the informational sheet they gave me and saw I’m in room 1224. The 12th floor, in room 24. I started grabbing a few bags out as we loaded the cart to take up to my room. I didn’t have much stuff, so it didn’t take long to fill my cart and get ready to go in. I waited for Jed outside the door, so he could park the car and help me upstairs. As it got darker out, it also got colder, so I decided to go inside the door to wait for Jed. I pushed the cart towards the door when someone held it open. As soon as I saw him standing there holding the door, I lost my breath. My heart started racing as we both stood still, staring at each other. He had chocolate brown eyes that matched his brown hair. His tanned skin told me he’s not used to the cold. Even in his jacket, I could see his bulging muscles and broad chest. He had to be at least 6’5”, almost an entire foot taller than me. “Come on, let’s go!” I heard Jed say behind me. He pushed the cart into the doorway that this gorgeous man was holding. I smiled at him, and he smirked back at me before I followed Jed in. I swear I could see a fire in his eyes, but I didn’t want to stare too long. As soon as I passed this guy, I felt my body flush and my insides tighten. My stomach dropped as I realized how aroused I was standing in the middle of the hallway. Something compelled me to stand there, staring at him. I wanted to introduce myself, and he looked like he wanted to meet me too. He opened his mouth to say something when Jed yelled down the hall, “Come on, Elle, the elevator is here!” I didn’t want to leave until a girl came over to him, “Come on, D. You said you wanted to go out; let’s go!” The girl’s gorgeous blond hair fell in beautiful curls down her back. She slung her long arms over him; she was only a few inches shorter than him. Her brown eyes glistened as she locked arms with him and pulled him away. I watched her walk away with him, her curves in all the right places. He doesn’t want to meet me; he’s into girls like her. I finally met Jed at the elevator, and he asked me if I was okay. I shrugged it off; I’m here to learn, not go out to drinks with boys. We made it to the 12th floor and walked to the end of the hall to room 24. I opened it up, and my roommate came to greet me. “Hi, I’m Amelia, but you can call me Lia; it’s so nice to meet you!” She pulled me into a hug, and I accepted it so I didn’t offend her. Lia has short bright white hair with pale skin. She had unusual grey eyes and was impossibly skinny with no curves or muscle tone at all. She was at least 5’9”. Everyone around here is so tall! She and Jed talked a bit while I unpacked my stuff from the cart. Finally, it was time for Jed to leave, and everything was starting to hit me. I’m actually here. “Call me whenever you need to; I love you,” Jed said, and I hugged him tightly. “I love you too,” We let go, and he left the room. I sat down at my desk and saw all of my books were there along with my new laptop. I opened it up to get it ready, and Lia popped up behind me. “Fancy gear, someone brought it up a few hours ago for you. Are you on a scholarship?” She asked, looking through my stuff. I nodded, “Yes, I got a full scholarship for this year, and as long as I do well, I’ll be able to keep it until I graduate.” “So you’re like, brilliant?” I laughed. “Yeah, something like that.” I finished putting my laptop together, taking special note of the Facetime feature. If Jed gets an iPhone, I can call him through my computer. “Fire magic is my specialty; how about you?” “Wow, fire. That’s tough. I’m in water magic. Looks like I’ll be able to cool you down!” I laughed and shut my laptop down with a yawn. Lia took my schedule, and we thankfully have our first class together tomorrow morning. “Go to bed; you had a long trip. We’ll go to class together in the morning!” She handed me my schedule back, and we both climbed into bed. I shut my eyes and tried to fall asleep, but I couldn’t get that guy out of my mind for some reason. After a while, my tiredness overruled my curiosity, and I was able to fall asleep.
