Jake spent a troubled night trying to work out why the Northumbrians had buried Aldfrith in unconsecrated ground. It was mystifying, especially since the sarcophagus suggested the tomb of a wealthy and powerful individual. As he tossed and turned in bed, he even questioned whether the tomb might not be Aldfrith’s. Then he remembered the effect on him when he exposed the limestone.
