Chapter 3

1548 Words
After a few days of preparing and Ethan helping me with faking my I.D. and everything, I am now outside the infamous Kings University, where my sister took her life. It's a good thing that Majara and I are fraternal twins, or else my sudden appearance will shock those who knew her and thinks they see a ghost, but maybe that isn't such a bad idea. Ethan tried to change my mind again before I left his house, but my mind was already made up the moment I heard about my sister's death. I know her more than anyone else. Between the two of us, she's braver and not afraid of anyone. That's why my parents wanted to tame her. I am the weaker one, and I am the unstable one. I need to lose Majara to Kings University to finally have the strength to leave my controlling parents. And I just know there is more to her death than suicide, and I'm ready to risk my life for it. My parents tried to contact me by sending me a message, but the letters I read were enough to remove my sim card and throw it away as my insides boiled in anger and my guts twisted in disgust. It wasn't long before we learned about my sister's death, and they were already asking me to attend Kings University! Just how heartless can they be? I have already submitted my credentials online, and I was told that someone would be waiting for me to guide me. And my eyes easily found a middle-aged man in a faculty uniform. I walked closer to him while pulling my luggage. "Good morning, sir." "Welcome to Kings U, Majiko Rivers. Follow me, and I'll take you to your room." He responded without a hint of a smile on his face. Uh-huh. I feel so welcomed. The smile on my face faded as I followed him. I couldn't help but study the buildings we were passing through, and I immediately noticed the students, and they were watching my every move. Ethan was right, the rankings don't have a uniform, and everybody is wearing what I assume is Kings University's uniform. A typical white polo inside and black vest with gold lining and red logo on the left side. What a peculiar design and colors. I snapped my head back to the man when he talked. "Kings U is divided into three wings. The left-wing right there is the sports stadium where most physical education and activities are held. The right-wing is where the dorms are at. All of the students here are required to live inside the University." "Got it, Sir." I nodded my head politely. I'll admit, for a University with a bad and terrifying background, Kings U looks... okay? A well-taken care place? Maybe because of their reputation, but I thought of a scenario where trashes are everywhere, fights are everywhere, and students are running around cursing at each other. "Right. Lastly, the center is where all the departments are. What's your course again?" "Arts, Sir." Yes, Arts. The one I've always wanted to take, like what Ethan did. The one path my parents were so against, so I was forced to take psychology instead. "Arts are located at the far back. It won't be hard to find, don't worry. So, I believe you already received the rules and regulations of this University?" "I did, Sir." But I have yet to read it. Surely, it won't be different? He stared at me for a few seconds before his eyes dulled, if possible. "Read it, follow the rules, and you'll be just fine." Live like a zombie, right? Like a puppet. We stopped in front of a huge black gate, and I was amazed when I saw five-story buildings painted with the ranks' color. He guided me to the first white building. Ah, at least the years have colors. "You started half a year late, so try and catch up with the lessons. Here's your schedule, key, I.D., and uniform." he handed me a paper bag, and I accepted it politely. "Thank you, Sir." The man patted me on the shoulder. "Try to last long because I don't think you will," he stated before leaving. I clenched my teeth but didn't say anything. I spotted the key card for my room and read 2B. I stared at the building and cheered myself up. You can do this, Majiko. For you, sister. The room was okay. It's not big, but not that small either, but you can only see a double bed, a dresser, a small round table, and a chair. The door to the right is a small bathroom with only a bowl and sink. "What is this? Prison?" I asked myself, baffled by what I saw before I left my things by the door to sit down, and finally decided to check the golden rules. "Rules for Pawns. The curfew is 10 in the evening, and anyone who breaks it will face the proper punishment. Food groceries will be limited to 50 dollars a week, and the Parents will send it to their children in cash. The students are required to collect it from Cashier every weekend. If failed to show the receipt, the groceries will be collected. Hold up, 50 dollars?! Breakfast for seven days, toiletries, snacks. Are they kidding me right now?!" I threw my head back and groaned. "Good thing I've just had my injection, so I don't have to bother buying napkins. But how will people survive with this amount?" I ranted while waving the paper up and down. Ethan was acting as my parent, so he'll give me my money, but that isn't allowed anytime. Annoyed, I read on. "Pocket money for School necessities and food is limited to 10 dollars daily. Okay, okay, this rule is getting ridiculous. Ten dollars for lunch and possibly dinner? Aren't students allowed to eat whatever they want?! Ugh!" I slammed the paper on the table, but something caught my eye. "If you run out of money, work for it. Personal savings aren't allowed, and parents must show proof that they froze their children's card." I frowned down at the paper. Work for it? Work how? Do I have to do something for money? There has to be some explanation for it. I rummaged through the paper bag and saw a small piece of a paper note. I was left speechless after that. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Are they allowed to do this? "For a dollar, strip a clothing in front of everyone. For two dollars, confess your love to someone. For three dollars, kiss a fellow pawn. Walk on all fours from your building to your dorm for five dollars. For seven dollars, shout you like d*cks fifty times; for ten dollars, suck someone willing to." I closed my eyes and crumpled the note before throwing it somewhere. This is ridiculous! Everything about this University is absurd! How could they ever think about sending Majara here? Majara's always been the timid one. Granted, I'm the extrovert, but she won't let people treat her this way. While I was the perfect child they wanted me to be, Majara was the puppet they wanted to control. I sat in the corner with my back against it and hugged my knees. I closed my eyes and couldn't help but think of myself as Majara. What could she have felt when she first arrived here? Was she afraid? Did she want to leave? Why she didn't ever tell me about it? Whenever we talked, I always believed her when she said she was fine. I believed the smile on her face whenever she told me something about her day. I thought she was really happy here, and it seemed so real. "Oh, God. I'm sorry, sister. I'm so stupid." I rocked myself and drowned in sadness, but I stopped crying. I did not go through everything to break down now. I stood up and jumped a few times to clear my head. Now or never, Kings U. Because tomorrow was my first day, I decided to roam around and possibly see the place where she jumped from. It was in the Engineering department, Majara always wanted to be one, but now she won't be able to achieve that dream. I swallowed the sadness before I continued my journey, ignoring the looks I was receiving and everyone's eyes. They don't exist to me as long as they leave me alone. It didn't take me long to see the department from afar, and my footsteps fastened. It didn't even occur to me that I was walking through the back of the buildings to avoid curious eyes. I didn't want to be discovered that fast. I will take a quick look. I promised myself as I continued to walk, not noticing the slippery pavement until I stepped on it. My eyes widened, and I prepared myself to fall on my back and shut my eyes tight. The fall did not come. Instead, I felt someone catching me, making my eyes snap open to see a pair of beautiful blue eyes hidden behind a pair of reading glasses staring back at me. "Caught you."
