Chapter 9:
A pain in her back matched the throb in her head. Those were the first sensations Helena comprehended. Next came an echoey water sound, like she slept in a cavern that was full of water. Did she dream it or was this real? She wasn’t sure.
A glare filtered through her closed eyes. She now understood she lay on her back, and the glare was from lights over her. With her right hand, she shielded her face from the glare of the electric light and risked a peek to discover where she was. Instantly she realized she was alone. The space she lay in was barely large enough to hold her. At a glance, she estimated the cell was four by six by eight feet tall. Tiny by anyone’s standard. Last thing she remembered was being in a cave with the others… and a terrible smell.
