Tara wasn’t sure what a lanai was, but since she hadn’t seen anyone on the front porch when she came home, she figured her aunt had to be around back. Amanda stayed right on her heels as she breezed through the living room into the kitchen and pushed her way out into the back porch, where Marlene sat basking in the late morning sun. Unlike her daughter, Marlene made no effort to hide her early drinking—a bottle of Corona sat on the arm of her lounge chair, condensation beading like sweat along the glass.
