The Soldier Who Taught Her to Trust
This is the second book of the Soldier Series, to understand what is happening from the outset, I would suggest you read the first book The Soldier Who Taught Her To Love before embarking on this story.
This is the Prologue, the book will start properly around the 28th of September, with daily updates.
Prologue
The small white waves of the open expanse of grey sea crashed against the pebbled shore, the water glistening on the brown, beige and white stones before the it makes its way backwards in a hasty retreat from land.
Steven ‘Cigs’ Benson stands looking out noticing how the water never gets further than the small rock that sits amongst the pebbles, as it looks like it may reach further, the water retreats as the tide turns leaving more glistening pebbles that hid under the surface. He pulls the collar of his brown wool Crombie coat up to keep the chill of the cold air from nipping at his neck, and places his hands in his pockets, as he continues to look out towards the horizon, relaxing as he watches the ebb and flow of the cold and choppy North sea.
The sound of the lapping water, normally helps calm his mind, taking away the memories of what he had been through as an Ex Special Forces soldier, but today his mind is far from calm as he compares the flow of water to the girl he would like to forget, yet she haunts his every thought, day and night.
Each time he feels she comes closer to him, she suddenly retreats, lashing out, and never accepting that he is genuine in his feelings towards her, and so the arguments continued, until one day, Cig’s beat a hasty retreat, determined to not entertain a second thought of her anymore.
Months have passes since he walked out of the hospital ward, leaving her inside, unable to take any more of the verbal battering, the look on her perfect face, was that of hatred, she did not trust him, nor really anyone other than her best friend, and that man she said was a friend, yet she would listen to him, but never Cigs. After months of living in each other’s pockets, hiding out from the Mad Dog who had set about his murderous revenge on both Cigs and his brother in arms and fellow Instructor Jim ‘Kermit’ Henderson the relationship that never truly existed between them descended into anarchy, as the fighting never ceased. The constant ebbing and flowing of the cat and mouse game they had played, the undeniable s****l tension was laced with distrust and harrowing histories, and so any chance of finding happiness with each other all came to naught. They were opposites, and the old saying was true opposites attract, however the attraction was not worth the pain of her constant rejection and so he had walked away holding on to what little pride he had left.
He knew their paths would cross again one day, he was expecting it, but that day has come quicker than he would have liked, not giving him enough time to fully move on from her, to eliminate her from his brain, and his heart, for him to move on to pastures new.
Today he would come face to face once again with her, his nemesis, the girl who had captured this old soldier’s heart, and stamped her feet upon in almost breaking it apart. So his walls were built high, and he resolved to never let her in again, as he built up his armour of protection against the only girl who had once upon a time held his heart in the palm of her hands.
